Visiting a Secret Food Forest in the City

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.Martin Luther

I had so much fun today!

The previous days, I was buried books after books and had sleepless nights of coding sessions. I mean that was fun, too, but it's not about it. I had a short break from everything.

It was the first birthday of my first ever niece today and I was looking forward to it.

With all the time spent alone with books and my laptop, I had no chance of going outside and buying something ahead of time, honestly, I just forgot it. LOL!

My grandma was already outside the house at 8 AM, but I was still cosily asleep. She went ahead of me even if the event only starts at 11 AM! I was scrambling what to give to my niece, so I decided for a cryptocurrency wallet.

I opened my MetaMask app and generated a new account and sent it $10 before printing the 101s and the greetings into a cold wallet a.k.a. a piece of paper.

We arrived there just in time, but luckily, most of us follow Filipino Time culture! That means everyone arrives very late, some more than an hour later from the schedule. Yes, we have that, but please don't copy that. HAHAHA!

Of course, we had the formal greetings and some family pictures when we arrived. But this isn't about that.

A Living Food Forest

The house sits in a property nestled in a sub-urban space. While rapid development is happening here and there, the property was green.

Old trees lined the corners and some other fruit trees adorned the front yard and their home garden. Around the main tree grows another younger tree and other crops, ornamentals, and vegetables. On the easterm side of the property, there are some raised beds and plots.

By this time, I forgot the reason why I was visiting my cousin and niece.

The most interesting thing that I discovered was a native pomegranate, it was smaller and turns yellow when ripe. I did ask my aunt for some seeds if the fruit turns ripe.

I toured around the food forest, visiting each tree guild and raised beds. Something I better understood from observing the thriving food forest is that you don't need to have a lot of one thing, but you can have as many things as you can fit it in your garden.

Probably each day in that secret food forest, there is a unique mix of harvest. Maybe today, a berries and eggplant. The next day will be citrus and herbs.

It was a wonderful place to learn by observing, this just makes me more excited about how my own food forest will be in a year or two from now!

We later had lunch together with the other visitors as the little kids played Filipino games. When the event ended, I said my goodbyes to my cousin's growing family and went out the secret food forest and back to the sub-urban grays.

Development is inevitable, but I hope building with the environment and nature in mind will be part of the priority of our future leaders too.

The Beasts of our Current Era

At home, I settled on watching The Sea Beast on Netflix.

It wasn't very topnotch, especially with the strong push of inaccurate portrayals of racial diversity in historically-inspired movies which I am not a fan of, but the verbal message was clear, strong, and moving.

A group of powerful entities can build a seemingly safe world by instilling fear and funding wars to succeed with their personal motives and safe-keep their personal fame, wealth, and status.

The only way to end the lies is for the majority to start saying, no. It is out of my little power to persuade, but I hope someone powerful enough will come out to take a stand for humanity and will fight for the rights that the people of today are continually denied for.
