An e-test-drive with a Toyota BZ4X electronic SUV car and 20+ pictures

The first full electronic Toyota

See what the No.1 car manufacturer offers to the fast-growing eCar market. It took a long time until Toyota came up with their answer to all the Teslas, Hyundais, VW IDs, and all the other fancy full electric cars.

Hey Hive Family
let us travel the world again
today with a cool eCar

BZ4X

What a cryptic name. Even if the name does not come quickly to the lips, it follows a certain logic: "bZ" stands for Beyond Zero and thus for zero emissions. Like EQ at Mercedes or e-tron at Audi, it is intended to become the signet of sustainability. The four follows for the size and the X symbolizes the all-wheel drive. So more bZs with other numbers will follow.

The most important facts

A. More than 500 kilometers range with 71.4 kWh battery
B. Fast charging possible with 150 kW charging power

It's about time: Toyota may have made the hybrid drive palatable to the world and pushed the fuel cell, but the Japanese slept through the trend towards electric cars - and thus not only allowed Tesla to become big but also gave VW, Hyundai, and Kia a head start. But now the Japanese are also storming into the electric future.

As the first of more than 30 new zero-emission vehicles, the Toyota bZ4X is now taking up the chase against the VW ID.4, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

How fast can the BZ4X load

This was my main question for this test drive of around 750km on the „German Autobahn“ and how much does he „eat“

Loading with 145kW

Result

Yeah, a fast way to fill up the battery with some more power. Here you see the calculation of how we got to a 77% full battery and the costs of that

smartphone charging

While you use your Apple or Android car functions, you might like to have the smartphone charged. This works but could be faster.

On the Autobahn

The ACC (Adaptive cruise control) did a great job. Once switched on, the speed and distance to other cars went smoothly and securely. No spontaneous brake alert or other things like this.

We met a few bugs

image.png

While we went most of the time with just 130 km/h as the speed limit, we had a relaxed drive and the BZ4X took around 18 to 21 kW/h of energy.

The possible driving distance

With some luck, we had a bed with an e-charging station. This was a slow one, but we had enough time to reach a 100% load over the night. This is a picture from the Toyota app which allows you to monitor the car while having a party.

As you see, this one gave us only 350km with a full battery.

My overall rating

A great car with all what an actual car needs

Pros

A real car that feels like driving a typical car and not a small electronic thing. Nice high position to have a great view out of the car. The entertainment system and all these functional buttons are in the right place. My main point is covered as the charging is fast and as there is enough space for a family of 4 and their luggage.

Cons

It is not a cheap car and the range of 350km with a full battery could be more.

The new 2023 version will come even with better charging on the AC

Have a great day everybody
and let us travel the world again
