My Response to the LOH contest #238

As a woman, do you consider Solo Travel as a way of 'Me Time' and self care?

Although I am no longer young, neither am I definitely old. But it's within view. My husband refuses to travel anywhere, mostly because he has too many health problems to travel comfortably, and partly because he feels safer at home where everything is familiar. So if I want to travel, I have to either do it alone, or with friends or family. I have done both.

In 2009, 2014, and 2017 I did road trips to the Midwest with each of my three adult children. (The 2009 travel companion was only 17, so technically not yet an adult.) Each trip was quite different, depending on which of the three I was traveling with. Each trip was enjoyable in its own way.

In 2018 I drove with my sister and brother-in-law to Port Townsend, WA, to explore the area. We had a grand time.

In 2019 and 2020 I flew alone to Arizona to visit another sister for a few days in the winter. I don't like flying, but I had no problems.

Now I'm five years older, five years tireder, and feeling less adventuresome than I once did. All I formerly had to do to get the urge to travel was to look at a map. Now that urge isn't as strong. But if I do decide to travel any more, it will likely be by myself, and I will consider it "me time" and self care. Here's why:

My life is very full and busy. My husband relies on me more than he realizes for many things. I spend a great deal of time with my adult children and my three grandchildren. I always have projects going on in the house, and outdoors as well during the summer. It seems like I'm always on call to help out whoever needs a hand. I have to go someplace else in order to truly take a break. So hopping into the car and going for a drive is my golden opportunity to listen to my favorite music, think my own thoughts without interruption, and really relax.

It's nice to share an experience with someone else, but it's also nice to be able to stop whenever I want to look at whatever I want, and to keep the daily travel times short enough to avoid upsetting any body parts. Some folks want to press on, as if it was a race to the finish. I prefer to enjoy the trip as I go.

Traveling alone truly has a special charm, especially when it’s a way to have "me time" and practice self care amid a life full of responsibilities and people depending on you.

I understand the marathon thing! I've never travelled alone, but on family trips, it seems like we had to go, go, go! I just wanted to enjoy where I was really and not run the race of driving, hiking or sight seeing. Someday, I will do just what I want to do.

Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day!

Yes, I've had plenty of trips like you described, so I know what you mean.

Espero pronto pueda viajar, yo tambien me siento comoda en casa como su esposo

I feel much the same way. I travelled a lot when I was younger but it all seems like too much trouble now and besides, I'm far too busy.

So am I! It's tricky to squeeze in a trip between obligations.

Your life as you just describes it for some reason just warmed my heart. Hehehe. Maybe as the years come you've found home in the people around you (helping them out), and that matters more than hitting the road?

You could be right!

I'm right there with you! My husband hates to travel, and I have gone with a niece for company. Now, I have to go myself to destinations if I want, yet, I've seemed to have lost the interest and would rather enjoy my staycation on my back porch. The animals, plants, and birds bring peace and joy I don't find elsewhere.

That is also very true. But I like sitting on my sister's porch, too, and that's only 200 miles away. :)

It's good to travel with loved ones, especially road trips! I wish we have a bigger car to travel with my family.

We used to travel in a Suburban and then a mini-van, all five of us. But when I was a child, my mother somehow packed an ordinary 4-door sedan for camping trips with 5 people, and I don't know how she did it.

I am neither old nor young, and definitely not a Lady of Hive, but I'll add my 2¢ anyway.

I like solo travel. I had a lot of fun when I drove to see the eclipse last year, and when I meandered across Washington and down to Portland, Oregon just to get away and clear my head. I hate urban traffic, but I am comfortable cruising at 70 down the freeway (even if the Friend-Shaped Car isn't so enthusiastic at that speed) or prowling back roads to see the countryside.

I have traveled with family before, and it's not really something I object to, but they like to take more rest stops than I do, or aren't always interested in the same detours I am.

It does help to travel with someone else who understands the need to stop and take photos for a Hive post.
