That looks like little pieces of tiles. Did they have little elves break them up by hand? It's meticulous and intricate work.

Yep a lot of tiles to put in place. It is some labor intensive work. In the basement there is a smaller version of these on about 50 columns(each one a little different). Here is an example of one.
That's astounding work! Talk about craftmanship.
No kidding! I need to go back when I have more time and try to document them all. :)
