According to Hindu traditions, today is the festival of Dhanteras, which is also known as Dhantrayodashi. Since its date is according to the Hindu calendar, which is completely based on the position of planets and constellations, therefore October 29 is not fixed for every year, but this year we are celebrating this festival today.
Although since childhood, we have been considering Navratri as the beginning of the Diwali season, but according to traditions, the main festival of Diwali starts today, so on this day we start it by lighting diya's (lamps) and worshipping Lord Dhanvantri, the god of Ayurveda and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. This festival is celebrated for many reasons rooted in historical tales and traditions. In the name of this festival Dhanteras, 'Dhan' symbolizes wealth and 'Teres' represents the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha (waning lunar phase).
We Hindus believe that big purchases on this day, especially of precious metals like gold or silver, bring good luck regarding wealth and prosperity. So, especially today, the markets are so crowded that going to the shop and buying something becomes a big task. So for the last few years, we have decided that instead of going to the market and buying something by grinding in the crowd, it is better to stay at home, enjoy the festival and whatever gold or silver you want to buy, buy digitally.
However, we did visit the market too, just to enjoy the glitz and grandeur of the place!
