Looking Back

in Inner Blocks5 months ago

One of the best memories of my childhood were those spent with my grandfather. Like most of the people in my country- especially in the northern parts where farming, hunting or fishing are the main livelihood, my grandfather used to be a farmer. He had 5 children. Most of his life was spent on the constant battle on how to provide for them.

I could probably write a book and fill it with all the sufferings, disappointments and pains on his life. But I want to focus on this:his hopes and dreams for a better future for all of us. People used to tell him that he is very ambitious- to have dreamt of having all his kids have a degree. They used to tell him that he will be disappointed and therefor should dream according to his social status.

When I was in college, he died. That was one of the most painful part of my life- I felt that a part of me died with him. But that did not deter me from pursuing my dreams. I carried on and my sister did the same. Both of us are now working in the medical field. We have better chances, opportunities and life. But, we never forget that if not because of that soul who bravely dreamt, endured, suffered to see our mother through, we will not be where we are now.

I never really thanked my grandfather for everything he had ever done for me. But I believe that when I go to work, take care of my patients and they tell me how happy they are of my care, I honor him. When I do the things that I love, I feel him around me. I know that he is watching over me and he's proud of what I have done with my life so far.

I used to be afraid that someday, I am going to forget him or, his memory will die with me. I have decided that when I have my children and they have their children, I will be telling stories about him. About his hopes and dreams, on how that simple dream led us all where we are today.
