It’s great to continue to develop skills, but at senior level it’s not so much about individual skills, it is your overall package and your network.

For sure. The skill to deal with these people is necessary though and a lot of us don't want to develop them, or don't know how to and do it consistently.
The truth is, they either like you or they don’t. Find (with luck) someone in power that likes you.
