I think the MAGA movement is going to have to change its name to the MANK movement.
Make America North Korea
Rather than red hats, they can have grey.
I am like an old man shouting at kids walking past my house for no reason. So suffice to say, I am not a fan of modern late night talk shows from the US (or anywhere) as I find them all too loud, without enough substance. However, as far as the US seems to be concerned, comedy is apparently the only area where political discourse takes place, especially criticism, and it has been happening that way for many years. The comedians and their writers have been lambasting politicians for decades, no matter what side they are on.
Until now.
Other than the desire for humanity to be better, I don't have a dog in the race on any of this, but I do find it ironic how supposed free-speech advocates celebrate the stifling of free speech. With Stephen Colbert and now Jimmy Kimmel being taken off air, the average American should really be questioning what they want their country to be, because it is increasingly looking like a military dictatorship.
The UN report said that "Over the past 10 years the government has exercised near total control over people, leaving them unable to make their own decisions" - be they economic, social or political. The report added that improvements in surveillance technology had helped make this possible.
One escapee told researchers these government crackdowns were intended "to block people's eyes and ears. It is a form of control aimed at eliminating even the smallest signs of dissatisfaction or complaint,"
I get it. People love to identify with some kind of political position, be it left or right, red or blue, green or black. People love to be on the winning team and point scoring against the enemy, whomever their particular enemies may be on any particular day. I get it. People love to see the people they don't like, the people who believe differently than they, the people who make them feel uncomfortable, punished. But seriously - is this how you want to identify yourself? No matter what side you are on.
It is pathetic.
Grow the fuck up.
And yeah, these various talk shows are doing it for the ratings, as all the media does it, because that is how they get viewership and sell their adverts and make their money. All the news channels are the same, and the newspapers and the social media platforms. It is all about creating division in order to generate views.
Last night a friend visited (They are from the US) and he was talking about how much of a mess the world is currently and mentioned how the term "conservative" is misunderstood. And I fully agree. Because conservative means to conserve, and in order to conserve something, you have to have something worth conserving. As ownership goes down and people feel less responsibility to their community because they have less stake in it, we are shifting into a position where the only thing people are looking to conserve, is their chosen identity. And the identity they are choosing has nothing to do with their behaviour, but with their imagination.
While people put a lot of labels on themselves and each other, it is interesting to consider that the "left" are seen as liberals and the "right" as conservatives, when neither are true. When people are forced to adhere to some kind of made up labelling system for identity, those enforcing are trying to conserve their belief system. When people are trying to conserve freedom of speech by silencing those who speak what they don't want to hear, well... are they insane?
Yes - it is all insanity.
As I was saying to my friend last night, the problem is that because people have less ownership in the game, less skin, all that they have to protect is their idea of themselves. This means that they are looking to score points against their enemies, with the irony being that no one is keeping score. Because as they scream into the void, they are their own referee on whether it is a point or not. If they feel they have scored a point, they cheer themselves, even though no one else is actually paying attention, because everyone else is screaming into the same void.
A black hole of miserable people talking to themselves.
That is what the conversation is now, because it certainly isn't discourse. Discourse implies two or more people having a discussion, but the vast majority of the conversational content created on social media goes unseen, unread, and unreplied to. Only a tiny fraction of the accounts on X get a reply to a comment they make. But there are all the people feeling they successfully scored points for their team.
The only points being scored is the money being made by people who value ownership.
When people are conserving their identity, what they are actually doing is lifting their own ego to utmost importance and saying that it is their own personal dictator. No matter what happens in the world, no matter which needs arise and what kinds of behaviours are required, the ego has to be preserved.
I can't change, the world has to change to accommodate me.
But each individual ego is so rigid, so unbending, so conservative that it can't tolerate a place where other diverse egos exist. Which is why we keep disconnecting and separating ourselves. The narcissism of small differences taken to the extreme.
If your sense of self depends on everyone else acknowledging and accepting you the way you believe yourself to be, in a way that you believe they should treat you, you are in for a bad time. Yet, that is what we have created as a norm in society today, where we expect that we should never feel bad, never be challenged, and only hear and see what is pleasant to our particular eyes.
Like fucking mini dictators.
How about Make Humanity Great Again, because we have become a fucking pathetic species.

I don't know about North Korea, that seems a bit too premature, but United States is surely moving towards Soviet Union. Where rebels expressed their views via jokes or anecdotes and the highest level of descent was humor in songs like those from Владимир Высоцкий.
I am not a fan of the current administration, but I was a fan of the previous one either. The problem is that both parties are radicalizing and there is not much left in the middle. And somewhere in the middle are where the most practical decisions are made.
Fun fact after I first came to America I liked Republican narrative more. I even voted for George Bush for his first term. The problem was that what Republicans said and did were two different things. And I got a clear example of it from Bush tax cuts, as an accounting major in graduate program I was appalled at it. And that was not the only example. And then Republican party changed, and not in a good direction...
Sure, it is a process of degrees. I was going to go USSR, but these days, half of the US apparently thinks that it wasn't so bad there. I suspect you have a different opinion.
For sure. In every arena of life now, there is only polarisation. Nuance is dead to most people, as they don't even recognise it when it is there, because they are only looking at the edges.
I feel politics in every country has changed for the worse. And the people not in politics are just as much to blame for it. We should all take life more seriously, rather than pandering to our personal emotional state.
"seriously" doesn't mean without humour though.
I'm the same way, but I think we have very valid reasons. To say it is for no reason is a bit erroneous. Kids should stay off the dang grass! I actually wrote a post today in the reflections community where I felt like an old man complaining, but really I was just mulling over some observations I have been making lately. I don't watch late night talk shows either, but I think they have every right to be on, and the recent political censorship is getting well out of hand.
Note: I saw your post and voted, but haven't had time to read yet. Been a little bit of a mixed up day. Will read tomorrow :)
He is a baby throwing a tantrum, and the parents are scared to get on his bad side.
I understand, no worries. I don't know how many people actually read my posts anyway. It's a good thing I am such a comment beast!
Worse than the parents getting scared to be on his bad side, he has a whole army of people who think he is justified.
We are the last generations of Minumi, the last three perhaps more, being trained to have a sense of belonging. It's almost vital to belong to a group like the air you breathe. Therefore, even some, feeling that emptiness in criminal or fascist groups, find that sense of belonging.
That no one takes a position on something is almost normal these days in Latin America, it's almost nonexistent. I see in other regions, little by little, the talk of freedom is advancing while they point a gun at you to silence you. The world is changing, but the voices are almost unheard. Soon they will just be herds of people repeating what someone tells them. There will be no independent criteria. I think we're headed down that path.

This is what it is all about now. Illusion of freedom. Illusion of control. Illusion of self-worth.
I have been saying it for years. We are homogenising our thought and behaviour and as a result, becoming less capable as a group to problem solve.
It's like people need a mass design. :) I don't know if this will happen by decreasing or increasing the number of chromosomes. Problems arise because of people's damned small egos. Not everyone is the same, and they don't have to think like us. We differ in many ways, from appearance to education to parenting. After all, everyone is different. As long as people don't have more respect and tolerance for one another, the problems will continue.
I suspect that the problems won't just continue, they will escalate to the point that we annihilate ourselves from existence.
Trump is the most divisive and most polarizing US President I've ever seen and yeah, he's got serious dictatorial tendencies, which, sadly to say, is the reason most of his supporters love him. They say Trump is proactive and a doer, while I see a camouflaged dictator. I just hope the next president of the US does not toe this path or America's downfall is near.
Funny, isn't it? Support him to get more freedom, get less, and still support him.
Kimmel too?? I barely watch any news nowadays, given how much of a shitshow we have going on. I figure if something is really important, I'll find out about it. And yep, humanity seems to be going downhill for quite some time, but it seems the hill is becoming steeper in these last couple of years...
I generally do the same, but I also like to have some understanding of what is driving other people's behaviours and opinions. It helps match up why they do what they do :)
This is where i belive human life is shrinking to nothing. They dont have enough time to spend on things that matters...except when they see what benefit them. Rather than looking at the over all pictures, they are quick to get to the conclusion....and some try to bring down other by also accusation.
Getting to the conclusion, without thinking about the journey at all. The impatience and ineptitude is clear.
yup! Go Trump! and all our great 'leaders'. :P
Leadership seems to have failed everywhere. Trump is a symptom of how ridiculous we have become.
We should first put empathy and understanding instead of getting caught up in small divisions; otherwise, our egos will end up ruling us, and we will only care about our own validation.
And on the internet, there is always an immersive group willing to validate the most despicable of behaviours.
