Man's Mindless Destruction in Nature
No matter how big the problem we South Africans need to work together to find solutions, blame is at the feet of all who live here.

Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place,
but a pattern of soul
where every tree, every bird and beast
is a soul maker?
Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place
but a moving feast of stars,
footprints, scales and beginnings?
Since when
did we become afraid of the night
and that only the bright stars count?
or that our moon is not a moon
unless it is full?
By whose command
Were the animals
through groping fingers,
one for each hand,
reduced to the big and little fives?
Have we forgotten
that every creature is within us
carried by tides
of earthly blood
and that we named them?
Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place,
but a season
And that we are in its
final hour?
Controversy reigns over estuary health, how to manage this gift in our land or leave it to nature. Earlier intervention appears to have created a plug of mud, movement between estuary to sea accessing water for wildlife to thrive.
Tides move as does sea sand carried in, inland silt created plug would perhaps require a helping hand by dredging once again to bring depth back into channel to assist movement in water between sea and estuary.
Channel my be here today gone tomorrow, tides change appearance in the blink of an eye.
We are all connected, nature will take back what belongs to her, walk lightly with respect for everything. World Oceans Day is observed in month of June, this should be every day.
Large Eco-systems, there is no quick easy answers in rehabilitating, we must observe what happened in the past to try plan into the future.
Recently the estuarine plug broke open naturally, 18 April 2022 floods most are hopeful the reeds would die off with salt water entering the system once again.

St. Lucia seems to have lots of beauty around it, how long is the boat cruise, it looks like a nice way for outdoor fun.
Destination is one of a kind, boat cruise normally around 2 hours, one in the morning and then the sunset cruise. Most days locals gather to watch the cruise come in and sun go down.
That must be lovely!
Could live there if it wasn't so hot and humid in summer....

Yeah the heat is something I can't stand either.

A helping hand and management I think.
We know enough as humans to manage, enhance and protect instead of letting things go to ruin.
Further inquiries you realize the local farmers are suffering for the last five years, each time water rises they are washed out!
When reading old diaries draws attention as to how reliant many are on this estuary.
And I am sure those farmers have complained and asked for help but because the estuary is not their property, they cant do anything themselves...
Locals living on estuary have been there for generations, development in sugar and mining has washed sediment down, no this time they really have problems they are not sure how to overcome.
Rural folk are very different up there to town or city dwellers, seldom request assistance trying to live as trained by the elders.
Oh dear. That is problematic...
Everyone needs to assist.

Stewardship is critical — as in defense of wetlands and estuaries, not just management. They support so much life! The reeds and cattails also clean the water!
Reeds need to be removed to save mangroves, region never had so many reeds previously which is a sure indication nature is out of sink in the region.
Having the right reeds, bull rushes in certain regions assists, sadly our rivers and many dams suffering with plants that are not indigenous now smothering the waterways, common water hyacinth is one such invader.

Wonderful to be in nature, even when it is slightly out and balance.
