Climbing an ancient coral reef / Escalando un antiguo arrecife de coral

Sometimes we think that all the landscape around us has always been as we see it today, but it turns out that if we dig a little we get big surprises. That's what happened to me when I decided to go up to the Morros de San Juan and I did some research on the place to find out where I was going to stand.

A veces pensamos que todo el paisaje a nuestro alrededor siempre fue así como lo vemos actualmente, pero resulta que si indagamos un poco nos llevamos grandes sorpresas. Así me pasó cuando decidí subir a los Morros de San Juan e investigué sobre el lugar para saber dónde iba a estar parada.

Located in San Juan de Los Morros, capital of Guárico state, right in the center of Venezuela, these rock formations dominate the landscape around here, they can be seen from any point of the city. The first three photos of this post were taken from a moving vehicle while I was on my way to the center of this town.

Ubicados en San Juan de Los Morros, capital del estado Guárico, en pleno centro de Venezuela, estas formaciones rocosas dominan el paisaje por aquí, se ven desde cualquier punto de la ciudad. Las tres primeras fotos de esta publicación las hice desde un vehículo en movimiento mientras iba al centro de esta población.

As you can see, Los Morros (rounded peaks) de San Juan are formed by several peaks, in order of height from lower to higher these are: Papelón, Tucunuma and Paurario, the latter being the only one that can be climbed without climbing equipment. At its summit there is a lighthouse dating from 1929, which guided the first pilots who flew in Venezuela.

Como pueden observar, Los Morros de San Juan están formados por varios picos, en orden de altura de menor a mayor estos son: Papelón, Tucunuma y Paurario, siendo este último el único al que se puede subir sin equipos de escalada. En su cima hay un faro que data de 1929, el cual orientó a los primeros pilotos que volaron en Venezuela.

From a distance Los Morros look imposing, but up close the views are truly impressive. As I was approaching the area where they are located and from where you can start the hike to the top of Paurario peak, it seemed to me that the scenery was becoming somewhat prehistoric...

De lejos Los Morros lucen imponentes, pero de cerca las vistas son de verdad impactantes. Mientras me iba acercando al área donde se encuentran y desde donde puedes iniciar la caminata hacia la cima del pico Paurario, me pareció que el escenario se fue tornando algo prehistórico...

My thought was not far from reality, when I started reading about these limestone rock formations I found that they are about 80 million years old and that they were a coral reef. Here there used to be a sea that covered the central area of the country, it is hard to imagine, nowadays the coast is far away from here.

Mi pensamiento no estaba lejos de la realidad, cuando me puse a leer sobre estas formaciones de roca caliza encontré que tienen unos 80 millones de años y que eran un arrecife coralino. Aquí había antiguamente un mar que cubría la zona central del país, cuesta imaginarlo, actualmente la costa está muy lejos de aquí.

Because of its geological importance, it was declared a Natural Monument in 1949 in order to preserve it. Its official name is Arístides Rojas Natural Monument, although everyone knows it as Los Morros de San Juan. The greenery that surrounds these peaks, characteristic of the Venezuelan plains, increases its beauty.

Por su importancia geológica, desde 1949 fue decretado como Monumento Natural para así preservarlo. Su nombre oficial es Monumento Natural Arístides Rojas, aunque todo el mundo lo conoce como Los Morros de San Juan. El verdor que rodea estos picos, característico de los llanos de Venezuela, incrementa su belleza.

Before starting the ascent to the top I took a look around and captured these flowers and large gray rocks. This Natural Monument is made up of 2,755 hectares.

Antes de iniciar el ascenso hacia la cima eché un vistazo por los alrededores y capturé estas flores y grandes rocas grises. Este Monumento Natural está conformado por 2.755 hectáreas.

I also saw some mysterious open paths over there, I followed them for a few meters and apparently they didn't lead anywhere, better to continue towards the main route.

Vi también por allí unos misteriosos caminos abiertos, los seguí por unos metros y aparentemente no llevaban a ninguna parte, mejor continuar hacia la ruta principal.

You can't see them very well, but those little leaves were transported by a group of ants into their cave.

No se ven muy bien pero esas pequeñas hojitas eran transportadas por un grupo de hormigas hacia el interior de su cueva.

A while later I began the ascent, just a few meters up I could already see on one side a panoramic view of the mountains and on the other the Paurario or Morro Mayor with the lighthouse at the top, still quite far away.

Un rato después comencé el ascenso, apenas a unos metros de elevación ya podía ver por un lado una panorámica de las montañas y por el otro el Paurario o Morro Mayor con el faro en su cima, aún bastante lejos.

To access the top of this Morro, 1,060 meters above sea level, there are metal stairs that were installed when they placed the lighthouse there, that is to say that they are already 93 years old! Repairs have been made, they have been fixed better, but those 21 stairs are still the original ones.

Para acceder a la cima de este morro de 1.060 metros sobre el nivel del mar, existen unas escaleras metálicas que fueron instaladas cuando colocaron el faro allí, es decir que ya cumplieron ¡93 años!. Han hecho reparaciones, las han fijado mejor, pero esas 21 escaleras siguen siendo las originales.

As you go up there are spectacular views and also a cross or two in memory of those who took a wrong step and fell into the void.

Mientras vas subiendo hay vistas espectaculares y también una que otra cruz en memoria de los que dieron algún mal paso y cayeron al vacío.

There are short and long ladders, all of which must be climbed carefully and one person at a time, lest they come loose from the rock due to excess weight.

Hay escaleras cortas y largas, en todas hay que subir con cuidado y una persona a la vez, no vaya a ser que se desprendan de la roca por exceso de peso.

The vegetation here is quite lush and creates a microclimate where you feel cool, but as for wildlife I only saw some lizards, although they say there are monkeys, rabbits and other animals. Look at the photo below to see a piece of the city and one of the Morros from a certain height.

La vegetación aquí es bastante frondosa y crea como un microclima donde sientes frescor, pero en cuanto a fauna sólo vi algunas lagartijas, aunque dicen que hay monos, conejos y otros animales. Miren en la foto de abajo cómo se ve un pedazo de la ciudad y uno de los Morros ya desde cierta altura.

Look at those beautiful cacti! There are also several caves around here, of course, this is for people who practice rock climbing as they are located in more inaccessible areas.

¡Miren esos hermosos cactus! Por aquí también hay varias cavernas, claro, esto para gente que practica la escalada en roca ya que están ubicadas en áreas más inaccesibles.

The views as you reach the last stairs are phenomenal.

Las vistas cuando vas alcanzando las últimas escaleras son fenomenales.

The city of San Juan de Los Morros and the surrounding villages look like a model. Imagine that sea from 80 million years ago covering all of this....

La ciudad de San Juan de Los Morros y los pueblitos alrededor se ven como si fueran una maqueta. Imagínense ese mar de hace 80 millones de años cubriendo todo esto...

The space when you get to the top is not very big and part of it is occupied by the lighthouse. It is not in operation but you can still go up if you want to take pictures from higher up (I didn't).

El espacio cuando llegas a la cima no es muy grande y una parte de él está ocupado por el faro. No está en funcionamiento pero igual puedes subir si quieres hacer fotos desde más altura (yo no lo hice).

And in this case, also to step on an ancient coral reef, something you don't get so easily out there 😃.
