Gifting 50 Crochet Scrunchies | Sponsored By Hive

Hello everyone, I’m super excited today. I know I’m always excited when I’m sharing my crochet works but this is different. Sometime ago, the charity foundation I volunteer at went to a village to donate somethings. When we go there, I had a crochet scrunchie on my wrist and all the little girls wanted it. Unfortunately, I had just one so I gave it to the youngest and promised the others I was going to bring theirs the next time I return.

Some months ago, I was told we will be going back to the village to organize free health screening and I was so excited. I was finally going to be able to fulfill my promise. The girls that wanted the scrunchies were about 7 but I thought of those that weren’t even there and decided to do about 50.

Normally, I give money or buy stuff as gifts but this time, I wanted something more than that. Around August, I made a list of things I would like to crochet for December gifts and the scrunchies were on top. Most of these people in the village don’t have access to a lot of things and it makes them think very less of themselves. But I just want these people in less privileged places to know they mean a lot and they are just as valued as any other person.

When I was doing it, I remembered that it’s a whole community and that means the girls there are definitely more than 50. But then I didn’t have enough time to make one for each of them. So I got inspired by the Needleworkmonday community. I realized that through this community, I have been able to teach about three people how to crochet and one of them is even making money from it so why not teach the girls too.

I also remembered I could fund my crochet gifting project with hive so I got right to it. I took some hive from my account and then got the yarns, rubber bands and hooks. I drew up an extra programme to be added to activities going to be done on the screening day. I asked permission for about 3 hours out of the day to teach them how to crochet. I figured if I can’t give everyone a scrunchie, I could just show them how to do it and they can do it anytime and probably even sell them if they want to.

Making a scrunchie isn’t hard. You just have to make single crochet around the bands and make three double crochet in each stitch but imagine making 50 of them in weeks. At a point, I felt like stopping because I was really tired and was even telling myself the girls probably forgot about my promise. Then it occurred to me that would mean a surprise which they will never see coming. I can’t even express how excited I am with this whole project.

One of the best things that happened to me at the age of 8 was crocheting. I remember the excitement that followed anytime I could crochet a coaster and the kind of confidence it gave me at that young age. I’m really happy other little girls get to experience this feeling too. This is a dream come true and I can’t wait to see the smiles on their faces.

Aww this is so touching and beautiful to read, how kind hearted you are. Scrunchies definitely makes a perfect gift to girls and even more impacting them with the knowledge to make one themselves. They all look pretty and excellently done by the crochet queen herself.❤❤❤

Yeah the highlight for me is that they’ll get to know how to crochet too.
