Let’s Make Denim Yarn!

In recognition of our current Needlework Your Jeans Contest I decided to do something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

At one point I had lots of old worn out jeans on hand for me to accomplish this. I eventually got rid of them because they were taking up too much space.

Recently we had a big cleaning event in order to switch rooms around. Our thirteen year old daughter now has her own room. You can imagine how excited she is. There were a couple pairs of jeans I was able to get ahold of to do this project.

Have you ever made denim yarn? The process was actually a lot of fun. My kids were even intrigued and waiting to see the results 😁.

Normally I see people make rugs and bags with denim yarn but I’m looking to do something a bit different with it. You’ll have to stick around and check back next week to see what I decide 😜.

I’ll take you through the steps I did so that you too can make some denim yarn.

All you’ll need for this is a good sharp pair of fabric scissors and of course a pair of jeans.

Let’s Go!

First you’ll need to make a cut right below the back pockets in order to maximize the amount of yarn yield.

Next, snip off the entire bottom hem of the leg. This part is too thick to crochet with so we don’t want to keep those.

IMG_8488.jpeg

This is where you decide how thick you want your yarn to be. Some people like to measure to get it perfect but I just eyeballed it along the way. My goal was to have a slightly thinner yarn because I feel it will be easier to work with.

Once you decide your width you begin cutting strips along the length of the entire jean leg. You only cut up far enough to reach two fingers length from the edge of the leg. It’s important not to cut all the way to the top.

Here’s a closeup of what your cuts will look like…

IMG_8491.jpeg

Here’s a shot of the completed full leg of strips…

IMG_8492.jpeg

Pretty cool huh?! 😀

Now it’s time to cut the first strip. You just simply cut from the end and then let it hang.

IMG_8493.jpeg

Turn your work to where you are holding the thick middle part so that you can begin your diagonal cuts. This is where the magic happens.

You’ll cut from the side of one strip over across to the side (right where the slit is) of the next one. You’ll do this down the entire leg.

IMG_8500.png

Before you know it you’ll start seeing a continuous stand of yarn emerging…

IMG_8495.jpeg

Until you finally get to the end of the leg and see a pile of yarn…

IMG_8496.jpeg

That’s it! That’s all there is to it. Repeat with the second leg to add more denim yarn to your inventory 😉.

I enjoyed rolling my yarn into this ball. My five year old wanted to get her hands on it so bad…only to unravel it 🤨😅.

IMG_8485.jpeg

This really was a lot of fun to make.

You can use this same process to make t-shirt and fabric yarn as well. I love working with t-shirt yarn because it’s so soft and pliable. We’ll see how I feel about this denim yarn.

The real question of the day is:

What will I make with it? 🤔

Meet me back here next week for the reveal 😆!

How would you use denim yarn? Let me know down in the comments 😘.

Thank You!

Let’s get those jean entries in before the deadline. Have fun and best wishes to all that join ~

Sometimes we are all just really in sync it's crazy, I was just trying different ways of making yarn out of old clothes... going to share about it but it wasn't as successful as yours..

...that yarn ball does look very tempting to unravel I have to say🙃
But I am also looking forward to what you are making from it!! (if you can get your hands back on it😅)

Wow really! That's so crazy. I love it when we're in sync as a community. So many great ideas come to surface and it's lovely seeing how we all benefit from them. I really enjoy the learning and sharing we do here. I would love to hear about your method and experiences with the cutting.

Back then I was really into t-shirt yarn and that's when I first started cutting up my old clothing. I would make hair ties, necklaces and headbands for my daughter. It wasn't until so many ladies here got me hooked on denim upcycling that I started being curious about making this type of yarn. I'm not a good seamstress but I have found other ways to work with different materials. 😄

Lol!! I told my daughter when she outgrows her next pair of jeans I would make her a ball for her to play with 😂. She's gonna hold me to it 👀😆.

Thanks for the visit. Can't wait to share what I'm making ~ 😍

I completely forgot about T-Shirt yarn! What I like about it is, when you use it you can't really tell it has been "recycled". (A good reminder since in my project that was my struggle; to get rid of the "recycling look")🙃
And Jeans is kind of a whole different subject for itself I find. I am not sure which other fabric has such a strong character..?

So many great ideas come to surface and it's lovely seeing how we all benefit from them. I really enjoy the learning and sharing we do here.

Yes!!❤️

I'm not a good seamstress but I have found other ways to work with different materials.

Maybe not a seamstress, but very inspiring and such a creative being❤️😘

What I like about it is, when you use it you can't really tell it has been "recycled".

This is what I like about it too!

Awwww 🥹☺️🤗. Thank you so much. What a sweet and uplifting comment. I feel the same about you ~ 💓💗🩷💐😘

😊🙃❤️😘

I wonder if anyone is going to make a wrong cut and end up with rings instead of a long strip.... that will probably be me 😄

This is such a good idea to make use of old jeans that don't fit anymore. I'm not sure about crocheting or knitting them as I don't have such big needles, maybe macrame or weaving (sorry no needlework involved). I need some coasters for the table, I might see how I can upcycle, need to put my thinking cap on.....

Hahaha! As I was doing the tutorial I was thinking to myself

I hope no one makes a wrong cut and then blames me for ruining their upcycle jeans. 🤣😂😅

You’re not getting away from us that easily. We accept macrame and weaving in this community 😜😆 so please share with us when you get around to it.

But yes I have seen some nice coasters made out of this yarn too. I hope you give this a go 😍😉 ~

it is an excellent idea to make yarn from garments that we no longer use, there are always projects where we can use this material. I remember last year I made a small woven mat with yarn created from an old jean, that was my project for the contest, it was a lot of fun and I confess that it is my favorite mat. I am anxious to know what your project will be with this material created by your own hands.

I agree! These come in handy for quite a few projects. I'm so mad at myself for not being patient. I had so many jeans I gave away but wish I would have kept a few of them for projects. I have already started a new collection 😄.

Looking forward to showing you what I'm making ~
😃😍

Love this tutorial!! I have worked on making yarn out of fabric in the past, but I didn't know you could cut the clothing in such a way to make a continuous strand -- very clever!! previously I would cut strips then sew them together before winding up the whole thing into a ball -- I will definitely try this technique soon, thanks for sharing!

Thanks @calendulacraft! It really is a great method for all sorts of fabrics 😃!

You will save yourself a lot of time doing it this way, I really hope it works for you. I would love hearing about your experience and seeing the results. 😍

Denim yarn! How have I survived this long in life without denim yarn!

Immediately leaves to find old jeans...

Love this idea, and epic necklace by the way, I came here from there! Love the look

Hahaha! I know right?! I did learn that crocheting with the yarn was a bit difficult. I'll have to tackle that task another time but I'm glad I chose the project I completed 😊.

I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial and the necklace. Thank you ~

😄😄I was just wondering how you were gonna make a Jean into a yarn at first but I finally get it
Also, you could have let your 5year old play with it for a while😌😌who knows what kind of creativity would have been done with it😆😆😆

Also don’t tell me you plan to beat those yarn🤯😶‍🌫️

Okay okay I'll tell ya what. The next pair of jeans she outgrows I'll make a denim ball just for her to demolish 🤣😁👍🏽😜.

I have a few ideas on what to do with it. We'll see what ends up working the best 😉.

Thanks for your comment. It made me laugh ~ ☺️

Ok ok I will be waiting to see

😄👌🏽

Making Denim yarns was really thoughtful of you. I cant wait to see the first project you come up with using the yarn🤞😊

How would you use denim yarn? Let me know down in the comments 😘.

Welll, I would probably make a little bum bag with my denim yarn. Since I have lots of jeans in my wardrobe, the bum bag(Fany pack) would always come in handy. What do you think?

Thanks Wongi! Let's hope I finish what I set out to do 🙏🏽😅.

Yes, I can definitely see a bum bag made out of denim yarn. I see lots of cute bags made but haven’t seen one of those yet. I’m curious to see yours if you get around to making one.

I remember always carrying one when I was a little girl. We all had one for vacation to keep our monies, lip gloss, sun glasses and other things in. It seems these little bags never went away but are now being reinvented. I love your idea ~

Let's hope I finish what I set out to do 🙏🏽😅.

It gets really tedious sometimes. Lets hope you finish it up soon enough:)😅

I’m curious to see yours if you get around to making one.

I thought of making yarns with denim jeans too but I would need big sized hooks and I haven't gotten them yet. I would definitely take up this offer when I eventually get a big sized hook😊

I totally get it. You do have to have the right size hook or you'll drive yourself crazy trying with the smaller ones. 😉

Exactly 😅. I don't want to take that chance😂

Right! 😄

Hi @crosheille, a great idea to take advantage of the jeans we no longer use, my concern is to make the right cuts to get the strips, with the cutting process you have explained I think I will succeed; seeing the ball of yarn I can think of several ideas; a wallet would look great, also a bandana, scrunchie, pot holders and kitchen gloves, there are so many that it is difficult to choose, I hope next week to see your creation using threads of jeans.

Greetings to you!

I know what you mean. When I first did it I was afraid to make the wrong cuts too. I would have made a video but I learned awhile back that videos aren't my strong suit lol. To be certain you are doing the right cuts I suggest looking up some YouTube videos. That way you can make sure you understand the process before making a snip. 😉

Oh yeah! The possibilities are endless. I love the ideas you mentioned here, especially the scrunchie 👀😁.

Please share with us if you give this a try ~ 😍😘

Yes, I imagine that the cuts must be made very carefully, I have several unused jeans and it would be great to recycle them, I had a bag in mind, but with the great idea of jean threads, the options are several; I will surely share the project in the community, for now I will take the necessary time to cut the threads, thanks for sharing this original and creative idea, I really liked it.

Blessings!

Yes, take your time as you go. I was getting a bit anxious and cut some of the strips smaller than I would have liked 😄.

I hope you enjoy the process and I look forward to seeing what project you come up with. I'm glad you liked this idea!! 😀🥰

Wow, now I am very curious on what you will make out of denim yarn. My first time hearing this though. We keep learning every day 😍

Nice adding a new knowledge through your blog today, as usual though.. hehehe

I am Patiently waiting for you next week @crosheille , really want to know what you will come up with this denim yarn made by you 😉

I'm curious too lol. I have three ideas but not sure which one would work out the best. I need to decide soon today so I can get started.

Thank you! I do love adding new things to my blog and sharing what I’ve come across over the years. It’s fun introducing the community to new things. I also love gaining new knowledge from others as well.

Thanks for the visit deary ~ 😘

Wow!! This is very cool and I don't think I've seen or heard of denim yarn before. Can't wait to see what you're making with it🤗.
I think it would be nice for a Bucket Hat😁

Thanks for reading! I'm glad you liked this idea!

Oooh yes, I can see a bucket hat made from this 😍 ~

Wow, now I am inspired, I'll have I declutter my closet to find old jeans for the challenge.

I going to patiently wait for the reveal next week🤣🤣.

I am sure it would be so beautiful, whatever you decide to make with it.

So glad you're inspired to get out those jeans Amie!

Hahaha now that I've talked up this yarn and my project I'm feeling the pressure to deliver 😅. I sure hope I can complete it by next week 😬😄.

Thanks so much for your support ~ 😘

This is really a great one. I think with a denim yarn, I could knit my self a hat☺️☺️

Thanks for checking it out. Denim yarn is great for hats!! 😉

You’re welcome ☺️☺️

Ooooh, yummy dearest @crosheille !! I saw @theastone crocheting with fabric like this - but from a duvet cover... really lovely way the colour from bright old-fashioned duvet covers can be used... But I never saw a great yarn like this denim one - how brilliant! I don't crochet yet, but if I did, I'd LOVE to make a big-knit kind of an over-dress, which could be worn with an accentuating white underdress below it. Another beautiful technique I would love to learn! And what a great use for old jeans!

😍

😄 Thanks my dear Clare! That sounds neat. Thanks for leaving her handle. I'll have to check it out.

I have seen many things over the years I’ve been wanting to try. So glad I get to share them here with you all 🥰.

I could surely seeing you making something amazing like that. I already know it would be awesome 😍! You have to learn how to crochet now so we can see that 😃😁.

So glad you like the idea ~

what a nice technique you have presented, it sure is easy and we can all do it. i am anxious to see what you do with those threads. it could be a cushion or a basket. :)))

Thanks Carolina! It really is easy and anyone can make some.

I look forward to showing you!! 😃

We learn everyday, I've never heard of a denim yarn before now, can't wait to see what you mane of them, and that yarn balk is so satisfying to look at, more satisfying to unravel by the children, I hope you kept it far from reach 😂

I love that we learn something new everyday visiting Hive. That's one of the things that keeps me coming back for more 😄.

I’m glad you enjoyed viewing the ball. There is something intriguing about it lol.

Oh gosh yes. When I saw her eyes light up like a cat I was like “nope” ❌🙅🏽‍♀️🤣. Whenever your kid uses the words “play with it” when dealing with your craft gear you know it will never be the same again. In my book play means destroy 😂.

Hive has an unending pool of knowledge, I come back for more everyday too, Wonders of hive

In my book play means destroy 😂.

Haha, you got that right🤣🤣

Hahaha 🤣😂

It's really nice from the process shared but still yet I have no much idea about it and I think I need to learn in other to be good in this lol.

Lol it's okay that you don't know much about needlework. I appreciate you still coming and supporting what I do. It's always appreciated. Thank you ~ 😉

It's a pleasure ma

Hello friend, a pleasure to greet you, you always surprise us with your skills, I really had no idea how to make that kind of yarn, it's fantastic,I would like to try to make those exact cuts, it looks ideal for making woven rugs. Thanks for sharing, I can imagine how much your kids enjoyed it. 🤗

I will wait for next week to see what you come up with, I know it will be a great idea.💖

Awww thanks Laura ☺️.

Yes, I have seen rugs and coasters made from this type of yarn and they look pretty awesome!

My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. I am so excited to share with you all what I decided to make!! 😍😆

I was wondering how long making yarn from a jean would take and how you would achieve it. I can't wait to see the outcome!

It doesn't take long at all. Thanks so much for the visit and comment. I hope to be back next week with some results 😃😉.

Very nice but I'm thinking about the pain you will be experiencing while you do that project. Be careful though

Thanks @yoieuqudniram.

This will be a test at how well my 41 year old hands can hold up 😂. Thanks for your concern. I'll definitely be careful and fall back if I need to ~ 😉🤗

I am also intrigued.

😆😃☺️!!!

I like to DIY and I love this idea.! 🫶🤓

Awesome! DIY is the best! Thanks for viewing and I hope this gave you some ideas ~ 😉

It did...! Thanks ☺️

What a wonderful idea... I really liked it, I would crochet a rug with this yarn. 😊

So sorry, I didn’t realize I hadn't responded to your comment. I'm really glad you liked the idea. A crochet rug with this yarn would be awesome! 😉

🤭👍 Don't worry it can happen to anyone 😉🤗 Have a happy day!
