I Told My Friend I Wanted a New Hobby and What She Did Surprised Me

I’ve always loved the feeling of trying something new. There’s something exciting about starting from scratch and learning as you go. That’s actually the reason I described myself as an “all-around newbie” when I introduced myself here on Hive. I always find joy in exploring different things, even if I’m not sure what I’m doing yet 😁

Lately, I've been looking for a something new to try. I wasn’t sure what kind of hobby I wanted, but I knew I wanted something that would give me a break from my usual screen time. Something creative, hands-on and relaxing. I wanted a hobby that could help me slow down, be present, and enjoy the process without pressure.

I was chatting with my friend Kesh about trying new hobbies. I mentioned that I was thinking about learning how to crochet. I’ve seen some Hive PH members like @jonalyn2020 and @romeskie post their beautiful crochet projects. I even own a few of their handmade pieces from our meetups (1st & 2nd). I’ve always admired how detailed and lovely their work was. It made me curious about how crochet works and how I could possibly learn it too.

To my surprise, Kesh actually crochets too! And she was very excited to hear that I wanted to give it a try. She encouraged me right away, and just a day later, she sent me a package.

The package was filled with yarns. Lots of it. There were yarns in every shade! There were around 15 different yarns in the package, including one special handmade yarn mix - Winter Solstice. It instantly became my favorite!

I picked up the first fluffy yarn and it was comforting in a way I couldn't explain.

She didn't just sent me yarns, she also included purple crochet hooks, some stitch markers, and something very special just for me.

It was folded neatly at the bottom of the package. It was a handmade crochet top! It's a Celeste Vest and it was made by Kesh using Young at Heart yarn mix by Crocheted by Carisse on Instagram.

The stitches in this handmade top were so clean and beautiful! It fits me perfectly! I still don't know how Kesh got the measurements so right, we've only met three times in person! The top is light, airy, and super comfy! I wore it during my trip to Cebu. I felt really proud wearing something a friend made for me. Wearing something handmade is such a special feeling and it made me dream about making my own pieces too and giving it to people special to me.

When I saw all the yarns and the handmade top, it was a mix of happiness and excitement. She didn't just send me yarn for me to start a new hobby, she also showed me what it could feel like to wear something made with your own hands. It was an encouragement and a challenge at the same time. I told myself I can make this too, if I keep going.

Trying out a new hobby also means putting a little pressure on myself. I know it’s not supposed to be like that, but my competitive side always kicks in 😭 I always wish I could be good at things right away. Let’s see where this takes me in the next few weeks 😂

I started imagining all the things I could try making. I want to make scarves, cute bandanas, and earrings. I also wanted to make amigurumi!

I’m still in the early stages of learning, so I’ve decided to start simple. My very first project will be a bandana. I think it’s a good way to practice basic stitches, and I love wearing bandanas anyway!

I know I still have a long way to go, but I’m excited to learn. I’ve already started watching beginner crochet videos online. If you have any beginner-friendly project suggestions based on the yarn colors I have, I’d love to hear them!

If you've been waiting for a sign to try something new, this is it. Go for it! You never know where one small step might lead you.

Thanks for reading! I can't wait to share more about my crocheting journey soon!

What a good friend Kesh is, I admire your friendship, such a lovely gift you received, looking forward to your Crochet projects, you've got this!

Thank you! 🤗 Kesh is really one of a kind :) I can’t wait to share what I make. Your support means a lot 💖

Hello @cthings , here is a new friend in this crochet is a super nice journey to travel and more excited when you have friends to share, what a beauty of yarn and the detail of the piece to your size makes it more special. Ask @jonalyn2020 and @romeskie if they want to be my friends even though I'm on the other side of the world 🥰 greetings and welcome to the knitting club.

Having friends to share this journey with makes everything more meaningful. I'm sure jonalyn and romeskie would love to be your friends too 🤗 Sending you a hug all the way from my side of the world! 😊 Thanks so much for welcoming meee!

Hello there, @madefrance! 🤗
@romeskie and I haven't met in person yet. Although we live in the same country, we're still quite far apart. But distance isn't a hindrance to our growing friendship—thanks to technology!

So even if we're miles away, I don't see any reason why we can't be friends with you too. 🥰

Oh how beautiful, yes I accept to have more friends inside Hive and more if they are knitters 🥰.

It's good to hear C that you're thinking of learning this kind of craft. Crochet can really test your patience at first, but with persistence, you'll eventually discover your Ikigai.

As a beginner, it's best to start by learning the basic stitches—especially since you already have the right yarns. Along the way, you'll also get to know the different types of yarn and which projects they work best for.

Crochet is a broad and rewarding hobby. Just explore, enjoy the process, and have fun!

I'm looking forward for the projects you'll be making in the future. Keep tagging me on your crochet journey. I would love to see your progress.🥰

Aww, thank you ate, it means a lot 🥹🤗 I’m hoping to grow along the way 💛

That's a lot of yarns. Very supportive friend naman si Kesh. Pakilala mo nga sin sakin yan 🫣😅

Indeed! HAHAHA sige, tara dito sa Manila 😂

Oh how beautiful that you are starting this journey accompanied and encouraged by people who know you! And you describe it so clearly, it will give you time away from the screen, focused on your creation, and relaxing at the same time. Beautiful gift you were given! I'm glad to meet people who are starting to crochet, I was there “recently” (I've been crocheting for about 3 years and I'm still learning every time I pick up a needle) and I had the belief that all knitters already knew everything from many years ago, but now I confirm that we are all learning together! I send you a huge greeting and hope to see your creations soon!

Thank you!! It’s comforting to hear from someone who's a few years ahead on crocheting, yet still learning with joy! I feel so lucky to be surrounded by people who support me! I can't wait to share my creations with you soon! 💖

Aaay. So sweet. Those purple hooks are my dream, Im bery excited to see your finished project soon. I have never tried those yarns but I bet they are thick enough, unlike the Indophil yarns thta I usually use. Good luck on your new hobby!

I !LUV those purple hooks. They actually match the top Kesh made! :) The yarn I’m using now is thicker so I’m hoping it’s easier for a beginner like me. But the handmade yarn mix Kesh gave me is Indophil. I haven’t tried it yet tho. I’ll check out your creations for ideas on what I can make with that kind of yarn!

Wow, the yarns a such a beauty as well as the top. I love the stitch type she has used for the top.
I'm also a newbie to crochet and is just about to get started on my learning journey too. I wish you ole tub of success with this.

I’m really happy with how Kesh made this top! 💓 I’m still learning too, so it’s always nice to meet fellow crochet beginners. So excited for you to start your journey!
Thanks for dropping by 🤗

My friend is also into this and has already created wonderful pieces that she wears. She does it even with eyes closed haha.

One common tendency with this hobby though is amassing lots of yarns. She buys in bulk and invades her sister's room (living abroad) making it as storage.

I can imagine how proud she must feel wearing pieces she made herself 💖 Doing it with her eyes closed? 😲
Now I'm getting ready, I might end up buying lots of yarns too 🙈

😍😍😍 Wooow! Welcome to the club!!! hahah. It always makes me super happy to see new people getting hooked (pun intended 😂) in crocheting. I think that's what makes me more inspired to do crochet workshops.

Can't wait to see your creations. Don't pressure yourself too much. Crocheting can be a relaxing habit but only once you've found your flow. For now, enjoy the learning. It will test your patience, your perseverance and persistence. But once you've learned just enough that you can talk while crocheting, ooooh Ikigai!

Let's crochet along sometime! 😊

Thank you mami romeskie! 🤗 This is so comforting, especially for someone like me who’s just getting started 🥺 but I’m excited to reach that point where it feels like second nature! for now, I'll enjoy the baby steps.

And yesss, I’d love to crochet along with you sometime! 💓

Keep exploring for a good hobby
There are so much to learn from what is available.

I will! I'm enjoying the process so far :)

A very cool hobby, the best thing to stop one is to dedicate one's love and soul to doing what one likes.

Right! When we pour our heart and soul into something we truly enjoy, it becomes more than just a hobby 😊 Thanks for this reminder!

OMG! I love those yarns. I'm also new to crochet, but I like making amigurumi, I haven't gotten into knitting clothes yet. 🤭 There are many tutorials on TikTok and YouTube for beginners. I hope you fall in love with crochet. 🫶

Yayyy, another crochet newbie like me! 💖 I’d love to see your amigurumi, they must be super cute! I’m still just starting out but I really hope I fall in love with it too. Thanks so much for dropping by~
