RE: A bit of basic basket building.

Damn this is awesome dude! Id never think that using newspaper could turn into a basket! I think I’ll have to try this out, we have all kinds of needs for baskets and what better of a way to do it than to make one? I think our son might have fun doing it with me for sure lol. Funny that the copy paper one is more fire resistant than wicker, I would think it would burn easier!

I was also a bit surprised by how unwilling the tubes were to burn. The news print tubes burn quite a bit easier than the copy paper, but still not as easy as traditional wicker, which in my experience lights like a match. I suppose if you've ever tried burning magazines, or a whole stack of paper at once, it makes a bit more sense. The magazines will usually burn fine around the edges, but to burn the middle you have to keep poking at them to get air between the pages. The small hole in the middle of the tubes fills up quickly with smoke every time, so no oxygen gets in there, and the tubes will just burn a little on the end then smolder out.

Kids generally love making baskets, but may lack the hand and finger strength for some of the work on the base. With just a little financial incentive, they can be godsends when it comes to rolling all those tubes!

I highly recommend Pinterest as a place to start if you want to get into this. Russian people apparently take this art VERY seriously, and they make some of the most beautiful baskets you'll ever see with paper tubes.

There was enough interest in this that I'll do a more 'instructional' post about it soon, but 'soon' will probably still be a month or so.
