Looking for my own drawing style, Fan art Kira & Ryuk - Death Note

Greetings everyone, today I want to show you a drawing in which I tried to do something different, it is a coloring practice exploring new techniques, because I have not yet found my own drawing style, so this is the result of that process in which I am still growing, it is something new and different from what I usually do, I hope you like it.

As you can see from my previous post, I usually like to draw in a style similar to anime, with thin lines and with colors that do not go beyond the contour line of the drawing.

Sketch

The first thing I did was a simple sketch where I placed the general idea of the drawing to give it shape, this time I wanted to draw Kira with her sinister and confident expression, holding an apple, something that could be considered a symbol towards Death Note.

On the other hand, I drew Ryuk with the typical expression he has, opening his mouth when he saw the juicy apple, in the original idea he planned to make Ryuk raise his arm trying to take the apple from behind Kira.

Line art

Now the line art, at this point I still wanted to do the same thing that I always do, coloring the drawing in a similar way to how we see it in an anime, so the line art is thin, I also made it quite detailed. For example, in the chains and in the notebook that Ryuk carries, as well as in Kira's hair, it is very important to decide what remains and what is improved, for this reason the line art has some extra details that are ignored in the sketch.

At this point I decided that I wasn't going to draw Ryuk's arm, as Kira was going to cover Ryuk's arm anyway, so it wasn't necessary. Although this is somewhat ironic, because although Ryuk's notebook is completely hidden by the position Kira is in, I still decided to draw the notebook.

Color

When it came time to paint the characters, I opted to use different bright colors simply so that I could then select an area to work on, that's why I made this selection of colors so atypical, that's when I had the idea of doing something different, so at this time I began to paint Kira's clothes with different lines and I was adding details, in each sector or area of the drawing, I was adding shadows and highlights, resulting in what can be seen in the image.

But to be honest, the result of the coloring on Kira's shirt, I didn't like it, but that was the only negative I saw in the drawing. As for the coloring of her hand, her hair and the apple that she is carrying, I must say that I loved the end result.

As for the Shinigami Ryuk, this was the second I painted, so when I proceeded to paint it, I had already mastered my new painting technique a little better, so I started with the torso, where I used a mixed technique, mixing both my old way of painting and the new experimental way of painting. For the base color, I decided to use the old technique and as for the part of the details such as shadows and highlights I used the new technique, although then I painted the parts that stand out from the line art of the torso. Finally I finished painting the wings and the details of the chain, the belt and the notebook that it carries. Resulting in the image that follows below.

And as a final touch, I decided to make a background with curvilinear lines, where I added small details such as the name of the series and some extra details such as the simple drawing of the Death Note.

Conclusion

I must say that I always believed that using a new drawing technique would ruin the drawing, but trying this time I really liked the end result, so it is likely that I will use this painting technique again in the future, but for now I have not yet found my own style of drawing, so I will continue practicing, and I must mention that although we are a little afraid of ruining the drawing, if we want to find our own style or if we want to improve it is necessary to explore new techniques. So I'll keep exploring!
