For several years now I have been drawing in the traditional way, pencil and paper. I don't usually share many of my drawings in the traditional way but I certainly like to do it.
Precisely on this occasion I will share with you the creative process of a very special drawing I did for a friend. She is an old lady, a grandmother who has her daughter out of the country and is here with her granddaughter.
I wanted to make her this drawing as a gift and she was certainly delighted.
Desde hace varios años he estado dibujando de manera tradicional, a lápiz y papel. No suelo compartir muchos de mis dibujos en tradicional pero ciertamente me gusta hacerlo.
Precisamente en esta ocasión les compartiré el proceso creativo de un dibujo bastante especial que le hice a una amiga. Es una señora mayor, una abuela que tiene a su hija fuera del país y se encuentra aquí con su nieta.
Le quise hacer este dibujo como regalo y ciertamente quedó encantada.
Step by step
To make this drawing I used an ordinary graphite pencil. The type of sheet of paper was nothing special either, just a blank A4 sheet of paper, the kind you use for printing.
Paso a paso
Para hacer este dibujo usé un lápiz de grafico común y corriente. El tipo de hoja tampoco era nada del otro mundo, solo una hoja en blanco de tamaño A4, de las que se usan para imprimir.
In the drawing there are 3 people, 3 generations, hence the title of the publication "portrait of 3 generations". They are grandmother, daughter and granddaughter.
I did the outline of each of them first, starting with the daughter. It was a large face, so I did it just as in the photo.
Seen this face without the details and shadows, it even looks weird, but I have always told myself that you have to trust the process and have patience when creating, everything takes shape gradually.
En el dibujo hay 3 personas, 3 generaciones, de ahí que haya titulado la publicación "retrato de 3 generaciones". Son abuela, hija y nieta.
Hice primero el delineado de cada una de ellas, empezando por la hija. Era un rostro grande, así que lo hice tal cual en la foto.
Visto este rostro sin los detalles y las sombras, hasta se ve raro, pero siempre me he dicho que hay que confiar en el proceso y tener paciencia a la hora de crear, todo va tomando forma progresivamente.
Besides the face I made the lines of everything else as a sketch; hair, neck, shoulders and even the granddaughter's hand.
It looks very strange, yes, but as I said later the shadow will be added and the drawing will take shape.
Además del rostro hice las líneas de todo lo demás a manera de boceto; cabello, cuello, hombros y hasta la mano de la nieta.
Se ve rarísimo, sí, pero como dije más adelante se agregará la sombra y así el dibujo tomará forma.
This is how the daughter's eyeliner looked, now it's the granddaughter's turn. She was a little girl in that photo, so I tried hard to give her those features. I even had to erase a couple of times because I couldn't get it the way I wanted.
Así quedó el delineado de la hija, ahora es turno de la nieta. Era una niña en esa foto, así que me esforcé en darle esos rasgos. Incluso tuve que borrar un par de veces porque no lograba que me quedara como deseaba.
In this drawing the granddaughter had a hair ornament made with fabric, so I only made the outline and then did it with more details.
En este dibujo la nieta tenía un adorno en el cabello hecho con tela, así que solo le hice el contorno para luego hacerlo con más detalles.
Here you can see how the daughter and granddaughter's eyeliner was coming along.
Aquí pueden ver cómo iba quedando el delineado de la hija y la nieta.
I did the grandmother at the end, because she is the one at the back of the photo and well, I think she is the one with more details.
She had glasses and they are not always easy to draw.
La abuela la hice al final, porque es la que está al fondo de la foto y bueno, creo que es la que tenía más detalles.
Tenía lentes y no siempre son fáciles de dibujar.
Her hair was short and her neck quite robust, as you can see in the image below.
At this point you may think that the lines of the drawing are too thick to be the initial outline, but no, this is graphite and with one pass of the eraser these lines usually disappear easily. However, the idea was not to erase them with the eraser, but to make the shadows on top of this outline.
El cabello era corto y su cuello bastante robusto, tal como pueden ver en la imagen de abajo.
En este punto quizás piensen que están muy gruesas las líneas del dibujo para ser el delineado inicial, pero no, esto es grafito y con una pasada del borrador suelen desaparecer fácilmente estas líneas. Sin embargo, la idea no era desaparecerlas con el borrador, sino hacer las sombras encima de este delineado.
With the outline ready, which took me quite a few hours of work, I started to paint with the same pencil, this time highlighting enough to make thick and more visible shadows and lines.
The eyes occupy an important place in a drawing, so you have to be careful when drawing them and try to make them as good as possible.
Con el delineado listo, que me llevó bastantes horas de trabajo, comencé a pintar con el mismo lápiz, esta vez remarcando bastante para hacer sombras y líneas gruesas y más visibles.
Los ojos ocupan un lugar importante en un dibujo, así que hay que tener cuidado a la hora de dibujarlos y tratar de hacerlos lo mejor posible.
The daughter's lips were also painted red, so I highlighted them quite a bit with the pencil to make them stand out.
Los labios de la hija también estaban pintados de color rojo, así que los remarqué bastante con el lápiz para que resaltaran bastante.
The hair, on the other hand, I made it by interspersing small and numerous lines, shadows made with my fingers and with the same eraser, erasing some sections of shadows to make something similar to the blonde highlights that the girl had in her hair.
El cabello, por otra parte, lo hice intercalando pequeñas y numerosas líneas, sombras hechas con mi dedos y con el mismo borrador, borrando algunas secciónes de sombras para hacer algo parecido a las mechas rubias que la chica tenía en su cabello.
This is how the daughter was finished after applying the shadows and correcting the initial outline.
Así quedó terminada la hija luego de aplicar las sombras y corregir el delineado inicial.
To make the girl I did basically the same thing. I started working with the eyes.
The girl has the detail that she has a slightly deviated eye. Maybe some people can't notice it, but this was a gift for her grandmother, who would notice the deviated eye if she looked at the drawing, something I remember she noticed immediately when she saw it once I gave it to her.
These are details that make the drawing more valuable, at least to the person to whom it was given.
Para hacer a la niña hice básicamente lo mismo. Comencé trabajando con los ojos.
La niña tiene el detalle de que tiene un ojo un poco desviado. Quizás algunas personas no puedan notarlo, pero este era un regalo para su abuela, quien sí se daría cuenta del ojo desviado si se colocaba en el dibujo, algo que recuerdo que notó inmediatamente cuando lo vio una vez que se lo entregué.
Son detalles que hacen que el dibujo tenga más valor, al menos para la persona a la que se le regaló.
From this angle, the one in the photo below, you can better appreciate what I am telling you about the deviated eye.
On the other hand, I made the lips lighter than mom's, since she didn't have any paint and they wouldn't stand out as much in comparison.
Desde este ángulo, el de la foto de abajo, se puede apreciar mejor lo que les digo del ojo desviado.
Por otra parte, los labios los hice más claros que los de la mamá, ya que ella no tenía pintura y no resaltarían tanto en comparación.
Remember the ornament the little girl had on her head? Well, it was at this point that I really started to add more detail to it.
After making the lines and shadows of the hair, I made the same lines and shadows of this ornament, which no longer looked like a huge worm on top of the girl's head.
¿Recuerdan el adorno que tenía la niña en la cabeza? Pues bien, en este punto fue cuando realmente comencé a darle más detalles.
Luego de hacer las líneas y sombras del cabello, hice las mismas líneas y sombras de este adorno, el cual ya no parecía un gusano enorme encima de la cabeza de la niña.
I was also busy making details such as the girl's hand, the hair and even the clothes of the 3 people in the drawing.
También me ocupé en hacer detalles como la mano de la niña, el cabello e incluso las prendas de vestir de las 3 personas del dibujo.
After the daughter and granddaughter, it was the grandmother's turn.
As I did with the other two, I started with the eyes. Here I had to paint a lot with the pencil and the sheet was a bit deformed. I had to use a clothes iron to flatten the paper again. This was the only way I could continue drawing, as the sheet was a bit thin.
Terminada la hija y la nieta, era turno de la abuela.
Tal como hice con las otras dos, comencé con los ojos. Aquí tuve que pintar bastante con el lápiz y la hoja se deformó un poco. Tuve que usar una plancha para ropa con el objetivo de aplanar el papel otra vez. Solo así pude continuar dibujando, pues la hoja era un poco delgada.
I didn't take too long, but I tried to add as many expression lines, wrinkles under the eyes or on the forehead; even on the neck I added other lines and the truth is that I was satisfied with the result.
No tardé demasiado, pero traté de agregar la mayor cantidad de líneas de expresión, arrugas debajo de los ojos o en la frente; incluso en el cuello agregué otras líneas y la verdad es que me quedé conforme con el resultado.
This is how the portrait of 3 generations of a family was finished. Here are a couple of pictures of the final result.
De esta manera quedó terminado el retrato de 3 generaciones de una familia. A continuación les dejo un par de fotografías del resultado final.
