After a long time again I posted in hive DIY. I was passing a little bit busy and hard time with my job. However, I got a holiday at the Vesak festival in my country. Wesak festival is the most religious festival of buddhist. This is also known as Buddha Jayanthi. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and the death of Lord Budhdha. Buddhist around the world do not celebrate vesak as a joyous festival. They rejoice in almsgiving such as dansal, blood donation, tree planting programme etc.
There are so many varieties of lanterns we made for vesak named as atapattama (octagonal lantern), Nelum mala ( lotus), star and circle shaped lanterns. Those are made with bamboo branches. These days we can buy lanterns from shops. But I believe we must make a lantern by ourselves. It is the true pleasure. However nowadays it is a little bit hard to find materials to make lanterns because of this pandemic. My favorite lantern is octagonal lanterns. Because there are so many meaningful thoughts behind it.
So let me show you how to make a lantern.
What do you want
🪵 Bamboo branches
🎨 colour papers
♻️ Rubber bands
✋ Glue
✂️ Paper cutter
- Cut the bamboo branches into pieces like this. You want 20 pieces.
- Bind correctly as a square . You need 4 squares.
- Then bind all the squares straightly and make it like this.

Now you have finished the main part. It is so easy to make. You can decorate this as your wish. Let me show you how I decorate this.
And also I cut a beautiful shape to paste on the lanterns. This is how I made a shape.
Let's make it now.
- Get a smaller paper
I will post pictures step by step.
Now drow a line like on this photo and cut it.
These octogonal lanterns seem to have been made by our ancient people the day before, including the sublime philosophy of buddhism more than other lanterns. This lantern tells us about Nirwana. Every part has an interpretation according to buddhism. I will explain it to you guys.
We decorate these lanterns with so many colours. Meaning of that desire in our mind. Our mind's obsession with anger, meanness and delusion. We feast our eyes. We like to decorate it beautifully. These things are all destroyed after a short time. Sometimes lanterns blaze quickly and also what we used colourful tissues become corrosion. So it is the permanent truth of life. Everything is impermanent; everyone is depending on flux.
In addition, the eight upper and lower triangle -shaped sections teach us about the noble Eightfold path. this it also teaches us about what is grief, what are the reasons for sorrow, what is the path to get rid of grief and eliminate grief. It is very hard to do these things. But if we understand this philosophy we can calm our mind.
It is the responsibility of everyone to join a real Vesak festival in creating a meaningful octagonal lantern with our children and conforming to the Buddhism preached by the Buddha on this Vesak day which has given priority to the Policy Pooja. So if you could not make a lantern, give this knowledge to your children or your parents. I believe the best is practicing our mind according to dharma. Even by observing Pansil we can calm our mind and live as a noble person in society. So always try to ascertain the philosophy of Buddhism.
So guys I hope you all get knowledge with creative ideas. There are hidden meaningful thoughts in everything as I believe. 😊 creations also like that.
Thank you so much.
Those lanterns are very beautiful and I enjoyed seeing how they were made.
