February is a strange month here... Some sunrises are complex and the valley seems to have a weather which is torn between a cloudy day with some unexpected drizzle or a day with bright sunshine, warm air and perhaps some humidity floating in the atmosphere... These are days with complicated luminosity and this is more noticeable during the dawn, when the sun seems to fight tooth and nail with the clouds in its effort to illuminate the town and the surrounding mountains... The luminosity during the early hours of days like these is truly challenging for photography purposes. However, when you take the camera and decide to deal with all this, the possibility of taking photographs that transcend the typical “sunrise with the sun disk on the horizon” multiplies... I invite you then to go ahead in this publication and enjoy my photos taken during one of those sunrises with complex lights...

Febrero es un mes extraño aquí. Algunos amaneceres son complejos y el valle parece tener un clima el cual se debate entre un día nublado con alguna llovizna inesperada o un día con sol radiante, aire tibio y quizás algo de humedad flotando en el ambiente... Son días de luminosidad complicada y esto es más perceptible durante el amanecer, cuando el sol parece luchar a brazo partido con las nubes en su empeño por iluminar el pueblo y las montañas alrededor... La luminosidad durante las primeras horas de días como estos es verdaderamente desafiante para efectos de hacer fotografía. Sin embargo, cuando uno toma la cámara y decide lidiar con todo esto, entonces la posibilidad de hacer fotografías que trascienden el típico "amanecer con el disco solar en el horizonte" se multiplica... Los invito entonces a seguir delante en esta publicación y disfrutar de mis fotos hechas durante uno de esos amaneceres de luces complejas...

“El Cojobal” is a bend in the road that goes towards the mountains west of Montalbán. This is the first viewpoint that one finds when following this path from where one can fully observe the valley and the mountain ranges around... The name of this place has to do with the existence there of a type of deciduous trees called “Cojobos” by the local inhabitants... Some people also call this place “La Curva de Bartolo” (Bartolo's Curve) because until a couple of years ago there lived in a small house, a man called “Bartolo Machado” who was very loved by the people of the village thanks to his kind and friendly character... Sadly Bartolo died in 2023 but his presence is still remembered with affection by many here. In fact, one of his sons and his family still live in his small house....

"El Cojobal" es una curva en el camino que va hacia las montañas al Oeste de Montalbán. Este es el primer mirador que uno encuentra al seguir ese sendero desde donde se puede observar a plenitud el valle y las cordilleras de montañas a su alrededor... El nombre de este lugar tiene que ver con la existencia allí de un tipo de árboles caducifolios llamados "Cojobos" por los habitante locales... Algunas personas también llaman a este lugar "La Curva de Bartolo" porque hasta hace un par de años allí vivía en una pequeña casa, un hombre llamado "Bartolo Machado" quien era muy querido por las personas del pueblo gracias a su carácter amable y campechano... Lamentablemente Bartolo murió en 2023 pero su presencia sigue siendo recordada con afecto por muchos aquí. De hecho, en su pequeña casa siguen viviendo ahora uno de sus hijos y su familia...

The place is a short distance from the center of town and can be reached without too much effort and walking about 20 to 25 minutes... Despite its proximity, the views are diverse and pleasant. So it's good to come here before sunrise and stop to wait for the sun to emerge on the horizon... The ideal (at least for this type of photos that I brought to share with you today) is to know how to detect the presence of clouds over the valley and have the good fortune that the fog does not appear and frustrate our intentions. Because, when we have fog at ground level, the horizon here practically disappears. But, over the years, I have learned to recognize when these types of sunrises will happen and then I can make the decision to make these kinds of short excursions and have a good time taking photos which I really enjoy.

El lugar está a poca distancia del centro del pueblo y se puede llegar aquí sin demasiado esfuerzo y caminando unos 20 o 25 minutos... A pesas de su cercanía, las vistas son diversas y agradables. Así que es bueno venir aquí antes del amanecer y detenerse a esperar la salida del sol en el horizonte... Lo ideal (al menos para este tipo de fotos que traje para compartir con ustedes hoy) es saber detectar la presencia de nubes sobre el valle y tener la fortuna de que la niebla no haga su aparición y frustre nuestras intenciones. Pues, cuando tenemos niebla a ras del suelo, el horizonte aquí prácticamente desaparece. Pero, con el paso de los años, he aprendido a reconocer cuando este tipo de amaneceres sucederán y entonces puedo tomar la decisión de hacer este tipo de excursiones cortas y pasar un buen rato haciendo fotos que me gustan mucho.

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.

NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografías capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
