I sat there as my family sang birthday songs to mark my 10th birthday. It was time to cut my birthday cake and everybody kept screaming

Me senté mientras mi familia cantaba canciones de cumpleaños para celebrar mi décimo cumpleaños. Llegó el momento de cortar mi tarta de cumpleaños y todos gritaban

"Make a wish! Make a wish!"

"¡Pide un deseo! Pide un deseo!"

I closed my eyes, and in the silence of my heart, I made the same wish I have been making since my 5th birthday. Then I blew out my candles. After the whole birthday celebration, I couldn't go to sleep, I sat by the window staring at fire flies with their glowing butt. I finally fell asleep on the window pavement.

Cerré los ojos y, en el silencio de mi corazón, pedí el mismo deseo que llevaba pidiendo desde mi cuarto cumpleaños. Luego soplé las velas. Después de toda la celebración del cumpleaños, no podía ir a dormir, me senté junto a la ventana mirando a las moscas de fuego con su trasero brillante. Finalmente me sentí dormido en el pavimento de la ventana.

The next time my eyes opened, I had this strange feeling, I felt terribly light, It was almost like I couldn't feel my feet. I kept hearing something flapping behind me.

La siguiente vez que mis ojos se abrieron, tuve una sensación extraña, me sentí terriblemente ligero, era casi como si no pudiera sentir mis pies. Seguí escuchando algo agitando detrás de mí.

"I must be having a strange headache. I'll try to walk it off." I said as I attempted to walk.

"Debo estar teniendo un extraño dolor de cabeza de garaje. Intentaré caminar para que se me pase". Dije mientras intentaba caminar.

To my greatest surprise, I was standing at the edge of a very tall tree and one step would have sent me down with a terrible fall.

Para mi mayor sorpresa, me encontraba al borde de un árbol muy alto y un paso me habría hecho caer de forma estrepitosa.

"What is happening to me!"

"¡Qué me está pasando!"

I was totally confused. I tried to look around me, then I realized that the flapping sound I kept hearing were sounds of wings attached to my back.

Estaba totalmente confundido. Intenté mirar a mi alrededor, y entonces me di cuenta de que el sonido de aleteo que seguía oyendo eran sonidos de alas pegadas a mi espalda.

"I have a wing! What are my doing on a tree."

That wasn't all, my legs and hands were extremely tiny. Suddenly dozens of fireflies surrounded me buzzing to each other.

Eso no era todo, mis piernas y mis manos eran extremadamente pequeñas. De repente docenas de luciérnagas me rodearon zumbando entre ellas.

"Oh she is awake."

"She is quite pretty."

"Yeah. The wings are cute on her."

I stood there in confusion staring at them, then I asked.

"Please could someone explain to me what is happening to me."

"Oh, está despierta".

"Es muy bonita".

"Sí. Las alas son bonitas en ella".

Me quedé confuso mirándolas, y luego pregunté.

"Por favor, ¿podría alguien explicarme qué me está pasando?".

An elderly firefly flew over to me and said.

"Hello there. I believe you are Bel. You are here because mother nature decided to grant your birthday wish to be a firefly for a night."

"No way!" I screamed. "But why now, I have always made that wish since I was five."

"Wishes are only granted when a kid is ten."

"Wow this is so cool. Can I eat what fire flies eat? Can I actually fly? What do you guys do all day?"

He smiled and replied.

"I'm sure you have so many questions. Tag along as we go about our routine for the night and you will learn all about fireflies."

Una luciérnaga anciana voló hacia mí y dijo.

"Hola. Creo que eres Bel. Estás aquí porque la madre naturaleza ha decidido concederte tu deseo de ser luciérnaga por una noche".

"¡No puede ser!" Grité. "Pero por qué ahora, siempre he pedido ese deseo desde que tenía cinco años".

"Los deseos sólo se conceden cuando un niño tiene diez años".

"Vaya, esto es genial. ¿Puedo comer lo que comen las moscas de fuego? ¿Puedo volar de verdad? ¿Qué hacéis todo el día?"

Sonrió y contestó.

"Seguro que tienes muchas preguntas. Acompáñanos en nuestra rutina de la noche y aprenderás todo sobre las luciérnagas".

I couldn't believe it, I was actually flying. We flew away from the tree and into the night.

"Now you can ask your questions. One at a time this time."

"What do fire flies do all day?"

"We basically sleep all day, then work at night."

"So what's with the light in your butts?"

He gave out a slight laughter, then he replied.

"Those are not lights, they are actually dreams. Each firefly is entrusted to a human's dream, at night while they sleep, we place the dream in their minds."

"Wow. Where do you get these dreams from."

"Follow me, and you will find out."

No podía creerlo, realmente estaba volando. Nos alejamos del árbol y nos adentramos en la noche.

"Ahora puedes hacer tus preguntas. Esta vez de una en una".

"¿Qué hacen las moscas de fuego todo el día?"

"Básicamente dormimos todo el día, y luego trabajamos por la noche".

"¿Y qué es eso de la luz en el trasero?"

Soltó una leve carcajada, y luego respondió.

"Esas no son luces, en realidad son sueños. Cada luciérnaga se confía al sueño de un humano, por la noche mientras duermen, colocamos el sueño en sus mentes."

"Vaya, ¿de dónde sacan esos sueños?".

"Sígueme y lo descubrirás".

With dozen other fireflies, we flew into a large cave, golden streams flowed from the rocks that formed the cave. As we went deeper, we got to a point where millions of green gems were stacked in the walls of the cave. Looking up, the green lights were unending, it seemed impossible to see the roof of the cave. This is the most beautiful sight I've ever laid my eyes on.

Con otra docena de luciérnagas, volamos hacia una gran cueva, de las rocas que la formaban brotaban arroyos dorados. A medida que nos adentrábamos, llegamos a un punto en el que millones de gemas verdes se apilaban en las paredes de la cueva. Mirando hacia arriba, las luces verdes eran interminables, parecía imposible ver el techo de la cueva. Este es el espectáculo más hermoso que he visto en mi vida.

In this glorious place, there were thousands of creatures moving to and fro. Some of them were enchanting green lights into the gems, some were stacking the green lights into the cave shelves while others were implanting the gem into the back of fireflies.

En este glorioso lugar, había miles de criaturas moviéndose de un lado a otro. Algunas de ellas estaban encantando luces verdes en las gemas, otras estaban apilando las luces verdes en los estantes de la cueva mientras que otras estaban implantando la gema en la espalda de las luciérnagas.

"This is an amazing scene!" I exclaimed.

"Now you know where dreams are made. Come with me and get assigned to a dream."

"¡Es una escena increíble!" exclamé.

"Ahora ya sabes dónde se fabrican los sueños. Ven conmigo y que te asignen un sueño".

"Ella! Ella! I've told you to stop falling asleep on the window pavement. You'll get a cold." Mom said as she woke me up.

"¡Ella! ¡Ella! Te he dicho que dejes de dormirte en el pavimento de la ventana. Te vas a resfriar". Dijo mamá mientras me despertaba.

I looked around, and I was back in my room. Then I saw a firefly fly out through the window, and I smiled happily.

Miré a mi alrededor, y estaba de nuevo en mi habitación. Entonces vi una luciérnaga salir volando por la ventana, y sonreí felizmente.
