José Luis has always been a healthy, proactive young man, with a great sense of humor and an athlete; passionate about bicycles and cycling. This initially started as a hobby, but over time he decided to join a sports club where he competed at the regional level. He was one of those athletes who got up at 5 in the morning to go out into the ring with his team.
Due to circumstances beyond his control and the difficult economic situation in the country where he was born, one day he had to decide to sell the bicycle and its sports equipment; This broke his heart, but he swore that it would only be a stage that he would overcome and when he recovered financially, at some point he would return to practice and even he could have the latest model bicycle.
Several years passed and his financial status improved. By then the priorities had already changed, however, he continued with his illusions and clear goals: to be able to buy his own house and a car to get around the city without so much stress. Everything was going in the direction that this would happen in a few years, however, his recklessness played a very bad move on him.
The fact was, that one day he suffered an episode of the flu, perhaps Covid-19 not treated by medical specialists, which was triggering other symptoms. He had decided to self-medicate, and it was then that on his own account he completed a treatment with a medication that would change his life forever.
In the world of pharmacology there are some drugs that are stronger than others and that with prolonged use without medical supervision can influence or trigger both curable and chronic diseases. Unfortunately, José Luis had to experience the latter. After having ingested the drug "Dexamethasone" for more than two continuous weeks without being reset, he began to present worse symptoms in his body.
It was then that he decided to go to the hospital to be evaluated and to see what was really happening with his state of health. In the end, with all the tests carried out and medical diagnoses, no one could believe what was triggered... He simply could not accept what he was experiencing at that moment. He was barely 30 years old and he supposedly had a whole life ahead of him. So many plans that were materializing with effort and sacrifice, but an unexpected medical diagnosis settled like an evil shadow on his soul.
José Luis had never suffered from heart attacks or high blood pressure and that was the first thing that doctor told him; the safest thing was that he would be suffering from hypertension for the rest of his life. However, that was not the problem of dying, the really cruel thing was finding out about the results of the "Urea" laboratory test and the kidney ultrasound.
"I regret to inform you that you are suffering from kidney failure, therefore, you will be considered a patient for hemodialysis. We do not want to be negative, but according to the size of the kidneys and the result of the urea, it is most likely permanent", said the doctor in a sad tone.
In the midst of so much pain, upon receiving this information, José left in tears and laments. Indeed, prolonged self-medication with "Dexamethasone" had seriously influenced his current condition, although it was not the only determining factor. Similarly, after several hemodialysis sessions there was a slight hope that his situation might change.
Unfortunately for someone who was once a strong and athletic young man, it did not happen that way. After a month of being hospitalized, undergoing treatment to get out of his critical condition at that time, dialysis began and as the months went by, both the "urea" and the state of his kidneys did not change.
Life had to go on, and José Luis had no choice but to face his current situation with the best possible attitude. He was still young and was suitable for a possible future kidney transplant that could later be donated by a family member or someone with a match. This process would also not be easy, but as long as there was life, he had to cling to some hope.
To this day, the young dreamer continues to attend hemodialysis. It is known that he has suffered some infections due to the catheters that must be placed in his body to receive dialysis, which is every three times a week. It's hard for him to adjust to his new life and work at the same time, the way he used to, because some other complication keeps coming up. However, he looks for a way to solve any job from home.
The last thing that was known about him was that he needed to undergo an "arteriovenous fistula" surgery to be able to continue receiving his treatment on a regular basis without catheters, which over time have caused him serious discomfort. He also continues with the faith and hope that at some point he can have a kidney transplant that will allow him to continue living for many more years and increase his quality of life.
