BATTLE LINK -- January 13, 2025 -- Day 13 of 365 vs. @xawi
Welcome back for the conclusion of the Fight Pit Diamond Series event with action from Day 2 of the Alpha, Beta, and Chaos Legion tournament. Today's 32-mana battle had three rulesets: Counterspell, Super Sneak, and Might Makes Right. Only Water was excluded from team selection, so there were a lot of strategies considering all the different elements available.
What I like most about this battle is how many Beta cards made it into the contest. My opponent's entire lineup is Beta, while I also have three Beta cards in my own lineup. Xawi came prepared with thorns in 6th position to inflict damage on my sneak attackers. We both fielded the Lord of Darkness and Corrupted Pegasus in the first two spots, although my Pegasus is only Level 3. The big difference is how we organized and strategized against the Super Sneak rule.
The featured card of today's battle is the neutral Beta legendary, Hydra. This 7-mana package does it all at Level 4, bringing an insane set of abilities, especially good against other melee attackers. Hydra has thorns and retaliate as countermeasures to return the favor when attacked. It also has heal to restore its health and at max level it gains trample, which is a big deal when it can retaliate and kill monsters in the middle of an opponent's lineup.
My strategy to deal with Super Sneak was to start with the durable shield monster Crypt Beetle, which absorbed a ton of backline damage. After Crypt Bettle, I lined up Pelacor Deceiver and Hydra because they both have the retaliate ability to deal damage back to their attackers.
I looked to be a bit behind in this one until my Hydra started connecting with its retaliate attacks. In fact, Hydra accounted for the elimination of my opponent's last four monsters on the battlefield. Between its potent sneak attacks and its deadly retaliates Hydra showed why it can be such a dominant neutral monster in certain rulesets. Good try, Xawi!
