BATTLE LINK -- January 14, 2025 -- Day 14 of 365 vs. @teut

Today I have my last Modern ranked battle of Season 149, playing for my way into Champion League 2 against a Brawler ally @teut. The 47-mana battle had three rulesets: Reverse Speed, Heavy Hitters, and Fire & Regret. Only two elements were excluded, Fire and Earth, so there was plenty to pick from for this battle.

With Life available, teut took the opportunity to play Tofu with Olivia in the middle Mantaroth and Aves. Flanking the legendary promo from the 2nd position is nice, but Silverblade Fighter didn't put up much of a fight. In the back, Grim Smith is always a strong play for reverse speed, but the slow from the Scavo Heirling really hurt their chances in the Reverse Speed battle.

The featured card of the battle is the beefy neutral common from Rebellion, Ulundin Overseer. Like Silverbalde Fighter, it can be an effective meatshield to flank a bigger threat from 2nd position. But in this battle, I simply leaned into its big butt and small speed. 1 is ideal for Reverse Speed and I placed it right between two Weapon Trainers -- Rage and Zyriel -- to give it a dual attack.

Combined with Akane's ambush ability, Overseer tore through the Fighter's armor before my opponent could get their repair engine online. They had three repair monsters in the battle, but my slowed monsters had other plans. The Scavo helped my two weapon trainers get their attacks in early enough to make a difference in the battle.

Curiously, neither of us opted for Dr. Blight in Reverse Speed. I just figured he would play Grim Smith as tank, which blanks a lot of Blight's potency with immunity. Ultimately, I'm a big fan of playing into those one and two speed monsters in Reverse Speed battles, since that earlier attack is advantageous. Of course, few do it better than Overseer and Grim Smith, two null attack monsters who will be weapon trained for years to come.

And just like that, I rode off into the sunset in Champion 2 for the end of the season. For what it's worth, I finished Modern Ranked play in S149 with a win rate just under 62% winning 52 of 84 battles. Not too shabby! Now I just need to get my battles up... but tournaments come first. See you in the Splinterverse!
