BATTLE LINK -- January 7, 2025 -- Day 7 of 365 vs. @zawarrior
From one big-money tournament to another, today's battle comes from Day 1 of my second favorite competition, The Gloridax Wild Diamond Invitational Gold Foil event. Granted I don't have a huge Wild GF collection, but I have enough impactful cards to make a difference.
Today's 55-mana battle had three rulesets: Aim True, Wands Out, and Born Again. Two elements were excluded, Dragon and Fire, which meant I did not have to worry about Byz Kitty or Yodin. Phew! My opponent went with the most common magic-only play of using the void ability from Immortalis combined with multiple silence abilities from the Earth monsters. Another common threat with this ruleset is Runemancer Florre, whose dual attack with range meant that it would inflict full damage on any void monsters that are typically played in these conditions.
I decided to go in another direction entirely and selected Grandmaster Rathe and the Life team. Life actually provides two dual attack threats, Olivia and Anachron Bolter, to diversify my attack against an expected Immortalis void team. Rathe also grants +1 armor and the important void armor ability, which really come in handy in born again battles. Whenever the monsters would resurrect, they would come back with their void armor, meaning they were more durable than my opponent's monsters. Granted, my opponent brought a rust ability to neutralize my void armor play, but in theory, it would provide a strong advantage.
Today's featured card of the battle is the Chaos Legion soulbound reward legendary Iziar. In a magic-only battle, Iziar's void ability is a huge benefit for the Life team and matches the durability provided by Immortalis. But more importantly, Iziar has martyr to buff up its neighbors and taunt to make sure it is the first monster off the battlefield.
Despite my opponent bringing THREE silence abilities to nerf my magic attack down to 1 (Adelaide kept 2 attack due to immunity), the melee opportunity attack from Olivia and the range attack from Bolter made a huge difference. Once the martyr triggers from Iziar started occurring, it just strengthened those non-magic attacks even more.
As you can see, Round 1 went very well for me, finishing with an undefeated 9-0 record. I look forward to fending off the competition in Day 2 to hold onto a Top 4 spot and the top prize for the event. Watch out, Duce is loose!
