BRAWLS OF STEEL: End of Season | SPECIAL EDITION

in Splinterlands2 years ago (edited)

Ohh myy gossh, welcome back #splinterlands fans! Have we got something truly special for you this edition 😁 Star💫 here (@star-shroud) from the @SHIELD-OF-GLORY guild 🛡️ with our first ever edition of the fully revamped BRAWLS OF STEEL - END OF SEASON report ⚔️

We're joined by our good friend and co-author of the special eos edition Moros👑 (@moros) leader of the CARDS OF FURY guild 💪 Moros has used his magical skills to conjure up a treasure trove of brawl-related data from this past season 🧙 Believe me, you've NEVER seen the brawl results broken down and illustrated like this before 🤯 We think this is something the game should be doing but isn't, so.... we did it for you! You're not going to want to miss this.

BRAWLS OF STEEL: End of Season Report

WHY WE'RE DOING THIS?

First and foremost, we are fans of the game--plain and simple--and brawls and guilds in particular. Because of that, we want to get more players actively involved in guilds and brawls, to help grow the ecosystem to its full potential.

In fact, hey by the way, if you play the game and aren't part of a guild, just stop reading this right now 🛑 Seriously, just stop. Right now 🛑 Go to the "guild-recruitment" channel on splinterlands discord and start looking. Or make a post, get some people together and start a new guild. We cannot stress enough how much being part of a guild enhances the game experience. Like we said a few months back:

"If you play Splinterlands but aren't part of a guild, you might not even know what brawls are. You've almost definitely never seen a GLADIUS card, and that's a real shame cause they're awesome. First of all, if that's you---you are missing out big time! Stop reading this right now and go request to join a guild (or start your own). It's easy to do and I promise you won't regret it. Seriously my friends, the benefits are numerous, both tangible and intangible. Tangible in terms of shop discounts, DEC rewards, GLADIUS cards and the like. Intangible, in terms of the friends you will make and the comradery you'll create within the community. It is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of the game. Don't miss out." Star💫 original post"

In fact, if that's still you, both SHIELD OF GLORY and CARDS OF FURY are usually recruiting for our main guilds and feeder guilds, so hit up the public chat on our respective discords and introduce yourself if you're interested.

The other goal of these eos reports is to provide a comprehensive overview of top tier brawl results (right now, that still means TIER 2) and---for the first time ever---provide you the players with a RANKING SYSTEM to show: 1) the best guilds at brawling, 2) the best brawlers overall, and 3) the best brawlers in each fray! 😆

WHAT ARE BRAWLS & WHY CARE?

In the past we've posted background material on brawls, what they are, and why they are awesome. If you're completely unfamiliar with brawls, start with this post. Also stay tuned, because in the near future we will release specific posts on topics like:

  • WHAT ARE BRAWLS?
  • WHAT ARE GLADIUS CARDS?
  • WHAT IS AN ARENA?
  • WHAT IS A BARRACKS?
  • WHAT ARE THE BRAWL REWARDS?
  • WHAT IS A GUILD STORE?

For now though, we'll assume you understand the general premise behind brawls and how they work. So why even care about brawls though? To be honest, it seems like a lot of players don't. Probably for one simple reason---you didn't make any money brawling. In other words, you got glory and some GLADIUS cards, but that was about it. And since GLADIUS cards can't be transferred, sold or rented (they are "soul-bound" to an account), many players therefore ignored brawls altogether. This is a P2E game after all, right? But we're here to convince you otherwise, because you should care about brawls, especially now, for at least two important reasons...

First, brawl rewards are changing and you will start to earn SPS for brawls. As soon as the next brawl cycle hits, it's expected that SPS rewards will become part of the brawl system rewards pool. This alone should motivate many players to become more active in the brawl ecosystem.

Second, and more importantly, you should care about brawls because, on balance, brawls seem like a more fair and honest representation of a guild's battle skills and therefore their true rankings.

A BETTER GUILD RANKING SYSTEM

Consider the current guild ranking system and whether it always makes sense. The current system depends on the sum of each individual guild members highest ranking (in modern or wild). Thus, guilds with a maximum roster of 30 players have an automatic advantage in the rankings posted by splinterlands. Is that an accurate representation of which the best guilds are though? Maybe. Maybe not.

As opposed to ranked play, brawls are series of one-on-one battles in which (at least for TIER 2 brawls) 16 "frays" are formed. Each guild can only submit one player for each fray. Therefore, as long as a guild has at least 16 members, it should theoretically be able to compete with any other guild on an equal playing field. That obviously ignores a host of other things like deck strength, but at least the playing field itself is even.

For example, as we'll discuss more below, the #1 ranked guild in brawls last season, SUMMONERS TRIBE (24 members), is actually ranked #9 by splinterlands at the time this posted. As another example, the #3 ranked guild in brawls last season, ANTISOCIAL CLUB (23 members), is currently ranked #23 by the game.

On the flip-side, you have a guild's like Star💫's own SHIELD OF GLORY (30 members) or KNIGHTS UNITED (30 members) who---at the time of this post---are ranked #3 and #1 in the game, respectively, but who came in #12 and #19 in the the brawl rankings last season.

Why the discrepancy? Of course, it's the number of guild members. This isn't to cast any shade on the current structure of guilds. It's just to point out that the number of members in a guild has a huge impact on the current system, and therefore may not represent the most fair and accurate way to rank a guild's skill in battle.

RECOGNIZING MORE OF THE COMMUNITY

Finally, another goal here is to highlight some really good players that perhaps you haven't heard about before. Although they might not all be top of the leaderboard at eos, these folks are killin it in brawls battles! And that really is a whole other skill-set in this game that should be recognized. To let those accomplishments go unsung seems like a waste. Well, it will not go to waste any longer...

TOP 25 GUILDS BY TIER 2 BRAWL RESULTS

Enough of the soapbox for now---let's get to the good stuff! Without further ado, here are the TOP 25 guilds based on points achieved in TIER 2 brawls last season:

There's so much to dive into here, it's just so awesome! Of course, a huge congrats to SUMMONERS TRIBE on coming in first place, winning all four brawls this past season! The GUILD OF NEOXIAN came in an extremely close second, also winning all four of it brawls! In third place was ANTISOCIAL CLUB, who had three 1st place finishes and one 2nd place finish.

You may also notice a big name missing from the brawl rankings. Although we're not sure why, it appears that IMMORTAL GODS did not play the first brawl of the season. Therefore IG doesn't appear in the rankings. If anyone has further details on this, please post in the comments below.

TOP 10 BRAWLERS BY WINS

Not only did Moros👑 get us all that first-ever look at the TOP 25 guilds, he also brought us the TOP 10 overall brawlers by points:

Congrats to @donawas of LEGENDARY WIZARDS on coming in first with the most brawl points (97 points) last season! @samji of LEGENDARY WYVERNS and @fluidic-motion from HYDRA KIDS HYDRA WIFE tied with 93 points each, although the latter had one less battle overall. Congrats the other top brawlers as well, including some notable names such as @kittenz and @bulldog1205 from the #1 brawl-ranked guild SUMMONERS TRIBE, @uwelang from the legendary LEGENDARY DRAGONS, and @jlordc of GUILD OF NEOXIAN, among others.

TOP 3 BRAWLERS PER REGULAR FOIL FRAY (#1-12)

Oh, and not only did Moros👑 get you that first-ever look at the TOP 25 guilds by brawl ranking, AND the TOP 10 brawlers by points, but he went even one step further---bringing us data on the TOP 3 brawlers per fray! Because some frays have more battles than others, this seemed like the best way to ensure that all of the top players are recognized.

Of course, if you are someone who switches frays each cycle, you aren't going to show up in these fray-specific rankings. However, if you play the same fray each brawl (like many players do) then this data should provide good insight into who the top brawlers are in each fray.

Starting from FRAY 1, the top brawlers last season were @donawas with an overall league leading 97 points from LEGENDARY DRAGONS in first place, @jlordc (87 points) from GUILD OF NEOXIAN in second, and @mynameisnyef (81 points) from T&A LEGION I taking third.

TOP BRAWL BATTLES

Wow, that was a lot! We really have given you so much already, but if you can believe it, we're planning even more. In future editions of the eos report, keep an eye for the "TOP BATTLES" section. This section will contain links to watch brawl battles between top players each season. For now though, please be satisfied with watching this battle where Moros👑 uses his gold foil VORST and hands @kittenz😾 one of only three brawl battle losses from his entire season: battle here!

ECOSYSTEM COMMENTARY

Lastly, as we work to continually innovate on these brawl reports, we also have some ideas on how to make things even better in the game itself. In future editions of the eos report, please keep an eye out for the "COMMENTARY" section where we'll discuss ways in which we believe the brawl ecosystem could be overhauled such that older players are fairly rewarded but without creating barriers for newer players. The former group are undeniably crucial to this game, and the game wouldn't exist at all without them. But the latter are the new life-blood and future of the game, so consideration should be given to how we onboard more players into the ecosystem. More on this in future editions.

CONCLUSION

That's it for now! We hope you enjoyed reading the completely revamped BRAWLS OF STEEL eos report. If you did, please upvote this post! As we continue to improve each season's report, we look forward to constructive feedback and suggestions from the community in the comments section. Hope to chat with you there!

We're very underrated lol.

Yea seriously, that seems like a fair assessment. Based on brawls, you all are top 3 but the rankings don't take that into account.

Awesome! Some serious effort you've put into this. Very interesting to see the numbers and data presented this way. Also, very cool to be featured. I believe several of us had no idea we ranked 3rd last season. Looking forward to future editions of this publication.

We appreciate that so much! Part of why we wanted to do this was just to provide that data and information for the community to digest and use. And to highlight some players who were really playing well in brawls but might not even realize how well, like you were saying. We're planning to keep this going for sure! And make it even better as we go hopefully.

Currently our game is low on statistics. This is an opportunity for developers with some free time. Long term individual stats are hard to visualize but in theory easy to find as blockchain is public. So average user has so much difficulty viewing stats. Brawl stats so far been non-existent in any public tool, this is an opportunity I think.

Thanks azir! Agree with your comments above and we're super appreciative for the upvote as always. You motivate us to continually innovate this report. Could become something really fun for the community? We definitely hope so. And valuable too. Now that SPS is going into the reward pool for brawls. Guilds should want to know exactly who their best brawlers are for each particular fray. As you well know, we need to (and are) doing that in SOG this very moment lol.

Nice post. Next season post will look much different as Immortal Gods takes 1st. place. We didn't show up on your list because of me. It was all my fault. I have felt ill about it all month long. We shall make a glorious come back! ~Raynie..... Co-Leader, Immortal Gods.

Looking forward to seeing you guys compete out there.

well, well, well, lets see how that works out for you, I clearly doubt you're gonna take the first place

nice! this is what this is all about 😁 in SOG we are definitely revamping our strategies based on this data, so dont sleep on us!

Thanks! And thanks for clearing that up. We were concerned maybe the data was wrong but that's what it was saying--sorry to hear that happened. But yes, we'll expect to see you in the stats next season!

Awesome work mate! Glad to be working together to get these out and looking forward to the next one.

Thanks! Same. I'm just geeking out over all this data!

Great content, really appreciate this information being available! This is so helpful to the brawling community. Thanks!

You're welcome and thanks for the kind words! Great brawls last season too! We're hoping this can be an asset for the community.

This EoS brawl report is so friggin cool. The writing is nice and you do a great job of explaining the findings. I would love to see how far down the rankings I was for Fray 14!

Thanks Duce! I think you were actually pretty close. Maybe only a couple of point away from the top 3 for fray 14.

Yeah by my count I was only behind digital-wisdom by 2 points since he had two extra draws, and even with Moriarity in the loss column, going 20-5 to his 21-5. It hurt that I only had 5 battles in C96 and 6 battles in C95.

Thanks for sharing! - @azircon

Awesome, thanks all !

Great idea! Awesome work from both of you!

!BEER

Appreciate it ! We think this is such a good way to see the results.

Excellent job as always @star-shroud 👏

Thanks magic! I expect to see you up there next time.

Incredible post!!! Do you have a stat of "how many players participate in brawls each round"?

Thank you so much for putting all of this together!

Also, a shout out to my amazing guild Splinter Ops - apparently we're ranked #15 in brawls and #347 by the game lol.

Great post! I know this is a very late comment but may I ask ...
How did you gather this data? Which API did you use?
It'd be highly appreciated if you could answer, thank you!
