With Chaos Legion no longer part of the Modern format, players can take advantage of free access this season and explore gameplay using all the cards they own or rent, without the usual cost, especially Chaos Legion cards. It’s the perfect time to experiment with full deck combinations and revisit older sets in action. In today’s blog, I’ll be sharing my knowledge and experiences from revisiting the Wild format as part of a challenge I’m participating in, hosted by the Splinterlands Community Engagement Challenge.

Wild Format is free this season as part of a special event by the Splinterlands team to encourage players to revisit and explore the format without needing to spend the usual 2,000 DEC for the Wild Pass. This one-time event is a celebration of the new season and aims to give everyone from newbies to pro players, a chance to enjoy the full depth of Splinterlands' older card sets and unique mechanics that are no longer part of the Modern format.

Why you should try to participate?

Players should take this opportunity to try Wild Format because it opens the door to a wider pool of cards, allowing for more creative strategies, powerful combos, and nostalgic plays from previous sets like Untamed, Dice, and Chaos Legion. It’s a great way to explore the history of the game, experiment with deck-building using legacy cards, and even earn ranked rewards without additional cost. Whether you're a long-time collector or a curious Modern player, Wild Format this season is your chance to dive deeper into what makes Splinterlands so dynamic, and completely free.

Since it's been many months, possibly even years—since I last played in the Wild format...

This marks my first time revisiting it. I’ve decided to jump into a 1 battle using a mix of my owned and rented cards to gain some fresh experience and get a feel for the format once again.

In this battle, the rule set was High Five with a 13 mana cap, and only the Fire and Dragon splinters were available. Given my limited collection of owned and rented cards, I went with the Dragon element, using Akane as my summoner to take advantage of the Ambush ability. My lineup consisted of Halfling Refugee in the front as a tank and stat reducer, followed by Uraeus for poison damage, Naga Assassin for added speed and sneak pressure, and Kha'zi Conjurer as a filler and potential magic shield. On the other hand, my opponent selected Tarsa for a fire strategy and deployed Dumacke Orc, Uraeus, and Scorch Fiend, focusing on melee and thorns-type retaliation.

I managed to win this match due to having a clear edge in speed and initiative, allowing my units to strike first and chip away at the opponent before they could respond effectively. The damage output difference also played a key role, as my combination of poison and quick attacks overwhelmed their front line before their Dumacke Orc could fully utilize its retaliatory potential. This battle was a great example of how thoughtful positioning and speed advantages can outplay even strong tanky opponents in low-mana, high-pressure battles.

Earning SPS through battles may be slow, but grinding for Glints offers better rewards.

I noticed that I only earned 2.605 SPS with a league rating of 3240 in Wild format, which is a clear contrast to the 10 SPS or more I usually earn per win in Modern format. This really shows how different the two formats are when it comes to grinding for specific rewards. The wild format can be a good choice if your collection mostly consists of older cards that are no longer viable in Modern, and it’s especially useful for farming Glints to exchange for reward cards. However, I personally prefer sticking to Modern because it gives me the opportunity to play with new cards, explore updated abilities, try out evolving strategies, and earn higher SPS rewards overall, making it a more engaging and rewarding experience for me.

If you play modern and not want to waste energy in wild for little reward, playing ghost cards in training mode was the best means to test the new cards as well as the older card at any leagues you prefer.

Owh nice idea, maybe I'll try if I have time or next season. I usually just go which splinter is better in terms of abilities followed by stats and then building a decks.

I have trouble building a deck in peakmonster for Conclave.. maybe they'll fix it after season ends
