Are Dandelions The Most Hated Flower?

in Ecency Support16 days ago (edited)

@ecency-star released a prompt a few days ago, asking that we discuss our favourite flowers. To be honest, I don't have one, but today I looked out the window when I woke up and saw patches of yellow amid the green grass.

Here's A Link To The Prompt Post If You'd Like To Check It Out.

Dandelions

One flower has been just about everywhere all my life, and they were most likely one of the first I ever knew the names of. That would be Dandelions - because I remember picking one and all the other kids went mad saying that I was going to piss the bed... I didn't, evidently, but damn, I remember throwing it on the ground quicker than I thought possible.

They have always gotten a bad rap over the years, and I think many people don't give them a second look, other than to bestow some sort of hatred onto the poor things.

It's kind of like the difference between moths and butterflies. Everyone loves a butterfly when it wanders into their garden. People praise them and stop to watch them for a moment as they make their merry way to wherever butterflies roam.

Moths on the other hand are treated like a redheaded stepchild and are shunned for simply existing. They're considered ugly, and annoying just for existing, or being in your presence... again, a bit like a redheaded stepchild.

But, no, the abuse the common Dandelion gets doesn't just stop there.

You see, they have transcended most plants - maybe due to the abuse they get.

They can evolve into a new form as they reach the end of their lifecycle.

That's right, they build up all that hatred and then turn into this weird little cotton flower, most likely so it can get blown away in the wind and never look back.

But, that's not enough for most people. The fact that they change and prepare to leave isn't good enough, because people seem to naturally hate this form too.

Upon seeing these sprout up, most people are inclined to kick them... again, similar to a redheaded stepchild.

Anyway, that's it for this post, I figured that I would write about a flower that I tend to like/ be indifferent towards. Also, I thought it would be a good pick, considering they're something of an underdog in the world of flowers.

Sort:

Dandelions are edible!

I was trained as a kid to dislike dandelions, but learned to like them over the years.

Now that a head of iceberg lettuce costs $2.5, I've developed a new found appreciation for the pioneers who brought dandelions with them everywhere they went.

I can extend a salad with the leaves of young dandelions. I usually pick young leaves in fields that are not treated with fertilizer.

Another really odd thing about dandelions. The plants take to hard packed soil. The tap roots tend to aerate the soil. Since the roots run deep, they often pull minerals from deep in the ground. These minerals become available for the other plants in later years.

Agronomists noticed something strange in studying abandoned lots. In the first years of abandonment, the soil is packed and becomes completely covered with dandelions. A few years into the cycle, the soil is loose. It holds more water and is less likely to erode.

The really amazing thing is that the healthy soil is producing fewer dandelions.

Now for the weed that I dread:

Bindweed. Bindweed strangles everything in the garden. The roots have little nodules. The weed will start growing from the nodule when pulled. You might pull one bindweed and get four more in its place.

Good points. I never really thought of them that way but you are right.

To make the haters feel worse, if not mistaken, dandelions were reported to have some medicinal benefits. I can't remember off the bat, but there's definitely something special.
FYI, they do not exist in the South East Area region, at least from the urban cities in Kuala Lumpur.
I like their resilience energy.

They're also nutritious, and are definitely worth keeping around :)

Kicking the fluffy form only spreads them 🤣

Hahaha, seems to fit me pretty well.

It's a really nice piece of art, I wish I was goof at drawing/ painting. I get a lot of ideas for pictures, but I'm not able to do them justice when it comes to drawing them.

I remember picking up Dandelions when I was a kid and trying to carry them home, but it was obvious that when I reached home all I had in my hands were only flower stems
