No one in the village had seen the stars for a hundred years—until the night Charlie disappeared.
It had always been that way—thick, low-hanging clouds blanketing the sky like a curse. The villagers had long stopped wondering why the stars never came out, as generations had passed without the faintest glimmer. They farmed, prayed, and feared the woods that bordered the east, whispering of strange things that stirred beyond the trees.
Inspite of the dark starless nights that had become the norm, bearing a sense of hopelessness and despair , one soul stood out—Charlie! His mind, restless and inquisitive, sought answers in the forgotten corners of the chapel cellar, among dust-laden tomes. He devoured tales of a luminous past, clinging to the unwavering belief that the stars still existed, merely obscured, patiently waiting to be revealed.
Heart racing with excitement, and eyes glittering with so much hope, Charlie set out on a quest. One only his wandering heart would dare embark on. A quest to uncover the mystery behind a century of starless nights so silent, and just maybe, solve the puzzle.
On the night he vanished, a strange hum filled the air, unsettling the familiar silence. The winds shifted. And for the first time in a century, the clouds peeled back like ancient skin. Above, the heavens shimmered, exploding into breathtaking brilliance—a million distant stars, blinking alive like they had missed the earth.
People stood outside their homes, mouths agape, eyes wet as tears streamed down weathered cheeks. It was beautiful, so beautiful a sight for sore eyes. And yet, so terrifying.
Old Marta, the village herbalist, dropped her lantern with a gasp and an unsettling yet understanding look on her face. She alone seem to have understood what exactly had just happened. As flames sputtered from her lamp, she whispered, “The pact is broken.”
Days turned into weeks. And as the villagers searched for Charlie, their hope dwindling with each passing hour. No trace of him remained, only a peculiar spiral of scorched earth discovered at the edge of the ominous forest. It pulsed with a faint, otherworldly silver light, a silent testament to an unknown event.
Since that night, the stars have remained a constant, glittering presence overhead. But the village has also been cloaked in a new kind of silence, a heavy hush that settles with the dusk. The cheerful songs of birds are no longer heard after twilight. Children dare not stray far from their doorsteps. And deep within the shadowed embrace of the woods, something watches, unseen eyes fixed on the village, waiting.
Charlie, some now whisper, hadn't just disappeared. He had, in some unfathomable way, opened the sky.
And something—perhaps the very stars he yearned for—had taken him in return.
