A Look at New Hive Account Creation in 2024 | Total Created, Claimed and Top Creators

in Hive Statistics2 months ago

Hive accounts are unique and human readable. Some will claim that each account is a specific NFT. There is a lot of truth to that. Because of these unique and human readable names, Hive accounts come at cost. When a new account is created it needs to be stored forever on the blockchain. Unlike BTC or ETH where accounts are in a random format of symbols and letters, on Hive users choose their names. Ethereum even has a specific app, the ENS domains, that is used to create human readable ETH addresses.

This initial cost is somewhat an entry barrier for new accounts, but apps are mitigating this. Apps like Splinterlands, InLeo, Ecency etc, all offer accounts to their users. Let’s take a look at the new Hive accounts creation in 2024.

01.png

There are now 2.5M Hive accounts. Unlike the other blockchains like BTC or ETH, Hive has human readable account names. This comes at a cost as the chain needs to store these values forever. That’s why the Hive accounts are not free and unlimited to mint, as each of them is a type of NFT.

Creating Hive accounts is the costliest operation on the blockchain. Hive accounts can be minted from the current HP holders using RCs credits if they have enough HP/RCs. Otherwise, they can be minted with HIVE at a cost of 3 HIVE per account. This cost is set by the witnesses.

The option for creating accounts with RCs, or sometimes perceived as the free accounts require users to first claim account as an account token, that can be then used for creating accounts. Not all claimed accounts are created. Claimed accounts are not transferable yet.

Here we will be looking into the following:

  • Number of accounts created per day
  • Number of accounts created per month and year
  • HIVE burned for creating accounts
  • Total accounts created
  • Claimed VS Created accounts
  • Top accounts creators
  • Top accounts claims

For context we will be looking at the period from the very beginning of the chain, March 2016 till today., with a focus on 2024.

Number of Accounts Created

Here is the chart for the overall accounts created.

image001.png

Here we can see the two spikes in the overall period of Hive existence. First in 2017, especially towards the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018.

The second spike is in September 2021 where on occasions there were more than 20k accounts created in a day. This was because of the demand for accounts coming from Splinterlands at the time.

We can notice that in the last period the number of new accounts has dropped.

If we zoom in 2024 we get this:

image003.png

A smaller number of daily accounts created in 2024, with almost a steady rate in the range of 100 to 200 per day, with occasional spikes. The occasional spikes are up to 500 per accounts per day. This is a low number of accounts creation compared even with the previous bear market.

The monthly chart for new accounts looks like this:

image007.png

A similar pater as for the daily chart, with a bit clearer representation.
We can see the spikes back in 2017 and 2018 and again in September-October 2021. The chart here is cut off at 100k max, but in September 2021 there was a record high of 276k accounts created in a month.

In 2024 the number of accounts created per month is around 4.5k.

On a yearly basis we have this:

image011.png

The record high year in creating new accounts has been 2021 when there were 910k accounts created. In the last year, 2023, there were almost 50k accounts created that is a yearly low. In the first six months of 2024 we are close to 30k new accounts, so there is a chance 2024 has a just a bit more new Hive accounts that 2023.

Total Accounts Created

When we sum the above, we get this.

image005.png

We can see here the increase in the numbers of accounts in 2017, when the accounts number reached more than 1M. Then a period with a gradual increase and then even steeper growth in 2021, and now again a slow down.

At the moment there are 2.5M Hive accounts.

HIVE Burned for Creating Accounts

As mentioned above there is a cost for the HIVE accounts, RCs, or 3 HIVE. Here is the chart for the HIVE burned for creating accounts.

image017.png

This is an all-time chart, starting from 2016.

Cumulative there is 4.5M HIVE burned for creating accounts in the whole period.
We can notice the sharp growth back in September 2021, this again because of the demand for HIVE accounts for Splinterlands. Almost 2M HIVE was burned back then.

Since then, the line has been almost flat. In 2024 a total of 4k HIVE was burned for creating new accounts, out of which the @hive-recovery accounts is dominant with 2k HIVE burned.

Claimed VS Created Accounts

Claimed accounts are like sort of a buffer of accounts. Accounts with high HP claim accounts that later can be used for accounts creation. Not all claimed accounts are created.
Here is the chart for claimed VS created accounts.

image013.png

There as some oscillations in the number of claimed accounts per day, but overall, the number is around 2100 accounts claimed daily.

The number of accounts created can vary a lot, but as seen above we are far below the 2k daily accounts claimed now, and this number is around 150.

Around 4M accounts were claimed, while somewhere around 1.3M accounts tokens have been used. This means that users on Hive hold around 2.7M accounts creation tokens.

Top Accounts Creators

Here is who created most of the accounts in 2023.

image021.png

The @leo.voter account is on the top in 2024 with 6.6k new accounts created for now. Next are @appreciator and @ecency.

@steemmonsters, the formal absolute champion in creating accounts is in the fift place in 2024, although I’m not sure do they use other accounts as well.

Top Accounts Claims

At the end the chart for who has claimed most of the accounts in 2023.

image025.png

This chart mostly follows the HP holdings that the accounts have.

@appreciator is on the top, followed by the @ocdb account on the second spot. @blocktrades comes on the third spot.

All the best

I have an idea about my tricycles here in the Philippines. I can onboard my drivers 5 of them, instead of the drivers paying me let's say $1 a day for using my line I can just remove that 1$ and tell them just to post an article here at Hive and be active. In this way I can help them reduce the payment on my line which is cash. It would be a great help for them to have extra $ on their pocket to bring home on their families. Thoughts on this?

As long as they can make original content it's a great idea.
Hive makes a great savings account, but a poor replacement for regular employment.
So, accepting payments in hive will be a win/win.
If you use hbd, rather than hive, you can get a discount on purchases from https://distriator.com/.
It's free money just for spending hbd.
I'd think that as a transportation worker finding something to take a picture of and write 100 words about in return for some amount of free crypto is a no brainer.

100% agree it's a no brainer. I just had a talk with them today. I told them the increase will happen next year, they have 5 months to get ready and use Hive blogging to get comfortable. This one driver said that he was thinking about it. He is weighing his options about paying the $1 increase or using the Hive system. I can sense the frustration from him about me increasing the fee for the line. But like you said it's a no brainer, It's just hard for them to adapt in the change and I fully understand that. I will update the Hive community about this onboarding idea of mine. Thank you @antisocialist

Sounds like an idea that is worth trying out.

We need more incentives for people to get onto Hive. I could create loads of accounts, but have few takers.

👍 Just fyi, appreciator is collaborating and helping ecency onboarding efforts.

Nice!

The @aliento witness is in the top 10 in account creation thanks to https://holahive.com/, a site developed by the @hivecreators team.

Truly trivial numbers this year.

I'm part of the 2024 account creation(;

This year hasn’t been a good one in the aspect of creation of accounts
I just hope that things get better with time a

It will be good to introduce more people to the Hive platform
Also, there is a difference in registering and also being active so it is better to make sure that they become active even after they have registered

Definitely more incentives are needed for newcomers. Creating accounts is one thing, but sustaining active users is very important. It's great to see the details from you as always brother

Hive still needs to find its killer app. Splinterlands is the most well known outside of the social media apps as far as I know, but something with a bit more mainstream appeal is needed to generate more interest.

It is good that we are getting a good amount of new accounts, but seeing it get lower every year is a bit sad. The lower Hive price isn't helping our popularity, but hopefully as more apps become available, more users try Hive out.

There should be some incentives for new accounts. Too many people show up, post a bunch of meaningless content, get no rewards, and then leave.

Not sure what that incentive is. I'm also not sure why people think posting a lot, zero engagement with others is going to get them upvotes.

The sad part is when looking at how many active accounts there are.... I think that only 10% of all created accounts in the year 2024 are active.

This is something we should be concerned about and actively working to get more users who actually stay. We need to identify the barriers for entry and what is causing the lack of retention. I know the bear market is somewhat to blame but we should be able to show the value of being able to blog and build in a bear marker for greener pastures

Hmmm, looks like @inleo's efforts are having zero effect, despite all the HBD they are taking and spending. You all need to unvote the Inleo proposal

LEO Power Up Day - July 15, 2024

Sounds interesting, there's some need for us to promote Hive extensively. The data never lies and it is the truth in our ecosystem. Good job to all Hive dApps and users mentioned in this article.

We need retention and engagement among Hive users, there are lots of reasons why most people cannot stay longer within Hive. There are great content creators out here in Hive but most of them are not recognized and work independently.

Maybe there should be some sort of research and development among Hive users to find those volunteers who are willing to post out of passion and support them. Most of these individual users don't have a community yet and are not connected with some big names or groups. We need to discover those types of users.

Guide them and show them the real beauty of Hive without the threat of being downvoted or the feeling that they don't belong here because they are independent. There are great posts and interesting ideas from Hive users but most of them could not get the support from the community.

Retention and consistency are the keys and guide those talented individuals who are not just posting for the sake of getting rewards. Anyway good jobs to all the dApps and Hive users who consistently onboarded users to our ecosystem, but we need more ideas to retain them.
