The Viral Hit of 1996

in Musiclast year (edited)

The internet existed in 1996, but nowhere near what we know today. Not everyone owned a home computer. Cell phones were bricks, coverage was patchy, and only executives used them. There was no social media, YouTube, or TikTok. When something took society by storm, it was through television, radio, and a truly widespread societal shift.

And what should I discover while revisiting some old YouTubers I used to follow but a One Hit Wonderland review from Todd in the Shadows exploring Macarena, what this phenomenon was and where it came from. The Macarena was probably the biggest and most obnoxious of these pre-internet memes. I still occasionally joke about that dance craze as I check my pockets and belt for my EDC essentials. Keys, wallet, Leatherman, phone.... HEY, MACARENA!

Now, fads come and go on a weekly basis. This... this was huge. Like the stale boomer memes that won't die, the Macarena was embraced by old farts who wanted to be hip long after the cool crowd was done with it. But it turns out there's a lot more to the story and even the song itself. Who were Los del Rio, and what was the story of this dance craze that took the world by storm before "viral hit" was even a term that existed? Todd in the Shadows will tell you everything!

And now that #$%@#% song is stuck in your head again after all these years, too. Ha! But I hate Achy-Breaky Heart even more than this, I guess. I wrote about the stuff I actually liked from that era a few weeks ago.

That summer was defined by that song, how dare you bring it back! You can’t let the Zoomers know it exists, they already brought back “I want it that way,” I don’t think I’ll survive the return of The Macarena! 😱

!PIZZA

I hate to break it to you, but anyone who watches awful animated films is already aware of it; it's at the end of Hotel Transylvania 3.

Well, I guess we had a good run. Thanks for the heads up…

You know, the zombie Macarena just might be the perfect representative image for our times!

The sooner this makes a comeback, the more likely we are to see the salvation of 4th wave ska and another swing revival. !LOLZ

Hahaha. I remember this song, though I'm not from 1996. I still have no idea what made this song hyped, lol. Also, the Achy Breaky Heart is not to my taste either.

No doubt a wonderful song, My father use to tell me, in 1996 they use to go to cinema to listen songs or watch films with the family and with his friends. That was a gold time.

I hope no theater was subjected to that awful obnoxious song.

I was 20 in 1996, but I've never heard this song. My wife and I were living together way out on Cape Cod in a rented house that year. We had no TV and no car (and obviously no internet). We walked or rode our bikes to work, and went hiking or hung out at the tiny local library on our day off. We played classical music on the radio at work. We were happy to be cut off from "popular culture" and I guess it worked.

Count yourself lucky. That song seemed like it existed everywhere!

That was the year I did a cross-country road trip in an old '79 Honda with only the radio stations for tunes. Spending $200 to install a CD player in a car I bought for $800 seemed silly at the time. But in hindsight and given how much that song was aired, hoo-boy I would've done things differently...

Sorry about the musical PTSD!

Next up - BARBIE GIRL, followed by WANNABE, and then MMMMBOP hahahaha

Did you know Hanson has been plugging away at creating music ever since that obnoxious hit? Todd in the Shadows covered that ages ago, and there is a lot to the "after the big hit" story for them!

The Macarena was fucking awful, no more memories please! 😀

No promises. Will !BEER help?
