In 2019, the Royal Mint delighted coin collectors and storybook fans alike with the release of a charming silver proof 50p coin featuring one of Britain’s most beloved bears—Paddington. The second coin in the year’s Paddington Bear series, Paddington at the Tower sees the marmalade-loving bear don his iconic blue duffle coat and red hat as he pays a visit to the historic Tower of London.

Based on Michael Bond’s classic character who first appeared in A Bear Called Paddington in 1958, the coin taps into the nation’s nostalgic fondness for the polite Peruvian stowaway who made London his home. Over the decades, Paddington has become a symbol of British kindness, curiosity, and whimsy—qualities that are wonderfully reflected in this beautifully struck collectable.

A coin worth more than its weight in silver...

The 2019 Paddington at the Tower 50p silver proof coin was struck in .925 sterling silver to the Royal Mint’s highest proof standard. What sets this release apart is the vibrant colour printing that brings the reverse design to life. Paddington is shown tipping his hat cheerfully in front of the iconic White Tower, creating a joyful juxtaposition between this friendly bear and one of London’s oldest and most formidable landmarks.

The reverse was designed by David Knapton, who brilliantly captures Paddington’s charming nature against the recognisable stonework of the Tower. The obverse of the coin features Jody Clark’s fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, providing a balance between tradition and playful modernity.

Each coin was presented in an official Royal Mint display case, complete with a themed outer box and an information booklet sharing insights about Paddington’s adventures and the history of the Tower of London itself. With a limited mintage (as is typical with silver proof commemoratives), the coin quickly became a hit with both collectors and families seeking a special keepsake.

A collector’s favourite – and a childhood icon

For many collectors, this coin holds more than just silver value. It’s a tribute to a story that spans generations. From the pages of bedtime stories to the big screen and now to our coinage, Paddington has become an endearing part of British culture.

And there’s something truly special about seeing a figure from childhood immortalised on a coin. Whether you’re building a collection for your children, marking a trip to London, or simply love the bear from deepest, darkest Peru, this silver coin offers a warm, fuzzy slice of nostalgia with numismatic finesse.
