Marriage Proposal at Ahmet Arif's House ~ Ahmet Arif'in Evinde Evlilik Teklifi

In the Ten Eyes Bridge article I wrote last week, I said that I proposed to my girlfriend. Moreover, I also said that I will talk about the marriage proposal in the next post. There we are now. Welcome to my post where I describe my marriage proposal to my poem. Greetings loves and here we go!

Geçen hafta yazdığım On Gözlü Köprü yazımda kız arkadaşıma evlilik teklif ettiğimi söylemiştim. Dahası gelecek gönderide evlilik teklifinden bahsedeceğimi de söylemiştim. İşte şimdi oradayız. First of all, I would like to tell you about Ahmet Arif. Who is Ahmet Arif?

Ahmet Arif is a popular Turkish poet, writer and journalist from Diyarbakır. I know that his real name is Ahmet Hamdi Önal, but I still want to use the pseudonym Ahmet Arif used in his poems when describing him. Anyway. Ahmet Arif is one of my favorite poets. I enjoy reading some of your poems. You can even listen to some of his poems in his own voice. He also sang his poem named Hasretinden Prangalar Eskittim, which I shared above.

Öncelikle size Ahmet Arif'ten bahsetmek istiyorum. Ahmet Arif kimdir?

Ahmet Arif Diyarbakırlı sevilen Türk şairi, yazarı ve gazetecidir. Asıl adının Ahmet Hamdi Önal olduğunu biliyorum ama yine de onu anlatırken şiirlerinde kullandığı mahlası olan Ahmet Arif adını kullanmak istiyorum. Neyse. Ahmet Arif benim en sevdiğim şairlerden biridir. Bazı şiirlerini okumaktan zevk alıyorum. Hatta bazı şiirlerini kendi sesinden dinleyebilirsiniz. Yukarda paylaştığım Hasretinden Prangalar Eskittim adlı şiirini de kendisi seslendirmiştir.

What makes poets poets is their love, longing and impossibilities of the period. Every poem has a love woman, an unreachable man, and periods full of obstacles. This is how Ahmet Arif's story begins. I heard many poetry lovers in Diyarbakır that Ahmet Arif fell in love with Leyla Erbil and wrote dozens of letters. So much so that when Ahmet Arif declared his love for Leyla Erbil, Leyla Erbil expressed that she only saw Ahmet Arif as a friend.

Many poems were born as the fruit of this one-sided love. These poems, in which Ahmet Arif skilfully poured his feelings into lines, are so emotionally charged that it is impossible not to feel love and sadness together while reading Arif's poems.

Şairleri şair yapan aşkları, hasretleri ve dönemin imkansızlıklarıdır. Her şiirin yazıldığı bir aşk kadını, ulaşılmaz bir adamı ve engellerle dolu dönemleri vardır. İşte Ahmet Arif'in hikayesi de böyle başlıyor. Ahmet Arif'in Leyla Erbil'e aşık olduğunu ve düzinelerce mektup yazdığını Diyarbakır'da şiir severlerden çok dinledim. Öyle ki Ahmet Arif, Leyla Erbil'e aşkını ilan ettiğinde Leyla Erbil, Ahmet Arif'i sadece dostu olarak gördüğünü dile getirmiş.

Tek taraflı bu aşkın meyvesi olarak bir sürü şiir doğmuş. Ahmet Arif'in duygularını dizelere büyük bir ustalıkla döktüğü bu şiirler o kadar duygu yüklü ki Arif'in şiirlerini okurken aşkı ve hüznü bir arada hissetmemek elde değil.

There were poems belonging to him all over Ahmet Arif's house. This house was filled with so many poems that you could spend all day reading the poems in this house.

Ahmet Arif'in Evinin her yerinde kendisine ait şiirler bulunuyordu. Bu ev o kadar çok şiirle doluydu ki bütün gününüzü bu evdeki şiirleri okuyarak geçirebilirsiniz.

This room is called Ahmet Arif's room. We spent a lot of time here with my poem and took pictures. I proposed to my poem in this room. :)

Bu oda Ahmet Arif'in odası diye geçiyor. Şiirimle birlikte burada bolca vakit geçirdik ve fotoğraflar çektik. Şiirime bu odada evlenme teklif ettim. :)

The courtyard of the house was also very large. There were colorful flowers and an ornamental pool. It was a little cold when we were there but the sun was still warming us. I was quite excited to propose to my girlfriend. I had a phone and a phone gimbal with me. So I could take better photos and videos with the phone. I told my girlfriend that I brought this gimbal to shoot travel videos more comfortably.

Evin avlusu da çok genişti. Rengarenk çiçekler ve bir de süs havuzu vardı. Biz oradayken hava biraz soğuktu ancak yine de güneş içimizi ısıtıyordu. Ben kız arkadaşıma evlilik teklif edeceğim için oldukça heyecanlıydım. Yanımda bir telefon ve telefon gimbali vardı. Yani telefonla daha güzel fotoğraf ve video çekebiliyordum. Kız arkadaşıma da daha rahat gezi videoları çekebilmek için bu gimbali getirdiğimi söyledim.

We visited Ahmet Arif's house, examined his belongings, rooms and courtyard. We took a lot of photos and saved memories. Then things happened. I proposed marriage to my poem in Ahmet Arif's room. Actually, I was going to propose in the house of another Turkish poet, Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı, next to Ahmet Arif's house, but there were restoration works in that house due to the earthquake. I did not break my plan and decided to propose marriage at Ahmet Arif's house.

I placed the phone right in front of Ahmet Arif's room and said that I wanted to take a photo there. While my girlfriend thought we were going to take pictures, the phone actually started recording video. While examining my girlfriend Ahmet Arif's belongings, I quietly approached him and knelt down. When my poem turned around, I had taken off the ring and was looking into his eyes. It was a very exciting moment for me. I could see her happiness. It was an emotional and unforgettable moment for me to propose to my poem in the house of a famous poet and my girlfriend said yes to the poems.

Ahmet Arif'in evini gezdik, eşyalarını odalarını ve avlusunu inceledik. Bir sürü fotoğraf çektik ve anı biriktirdik. Sonra olanlar oldu. Ahmet Arif'in odasında Şiirime evlilik teklif ettim. Aslında Ahmet Arif'in evinin yanında başka bir Türk şair olan Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı'nın evinde evlilik teklif edecektim ancak depremden dolayı o evde restorasyon çalışmaları vardı. Ben de planımı bozmadım ve Ahmet Arif'in evinde evlilik teklifi etmeye karar verdim.

Ahmet Arif'in odasının hemen önüne telefonu yerleştirdim ve burada fotoğraf çekmek istediğimi söyledim. Kız arkadaşım fotoğraf çekeceğimizi zannederken aslında telefon video kaydına başlamıştı. Kız arkadaşım Ahmet Arif'in eşyalarını incelerken ben sessizce ona yaklaştım ve diz çöktüm. Şiirim arkasını döndüğünde ben yüzüğü çıkarmış ve onun gözlerinin içine bakıyordum. Benim için çok heyecanlı bir andı. Onun mutluluğunu görebiliyordum. Şiirime ünlü bir şairin evinde evlilik teklif etmek ve şiirler huzurunda kız arkadaşımın evet demesi benim için duygu yüklü ve unutulmaz bir andı.

After we left there, we went to look for engagement rings. Because I won't be able to go to Diyarbakır for a long time and it will be difficult for us to buy engagement rings together. While we were visiting Diyarbakır and I was with my girlfriend (my fiancee-to-be), we also took care of buying engagement rings. Here are our engagement rings. :)

Oradan ayrıldıktan sonra nişan yüzüğü bakmaya gittik. Çünkü Diyarbakır'a uzun bir süre gidemeyeceğim ve nişan yüzüklerini birlikte almamız zor olacak. Diyarbakır'ı ziyaret etmişken ve kız arkadaşımla(müstakbel nişanlım) birlikteyken nişan yüzüklerini alma işini de halletmiş olduk. İşte nişan yüzüklerimiz. :)
