After visiting the gorgeous beach on Porto Santo, we then headed up to the hills in the southern part of the island. There were a couple of viewpoints we wanted to check out. We had rented the quad bike and it was perfect for the roads there. You can drive a car to these viewpoints but the path is still a bit rugged gravel road and some places are quite steep.
The first viewpoint we went to was next to the beach we were on earlier. It's named Miradouro das Flores and these are the views that appear in this location.
You have already seen the photo below, I added this one in the beach post I made earlier but the photo is taken in this viewpoint.
Later in the evening, we hiked the mountain you see in the photo below. We went to search some caves, one of them you can see in the photo. It's quite small when looked at from here but maybe you spot it. More about these adventures in another post. Going there wasn't easy and we had big trouble finding the caves.
Having spent some time in this viewpoint, we went to another viewpoint named Ponta da Canaveira which was about 2 kilometers away. There too, some really spectacular views appeared over the surrounding areas. I loved the bright blue sea.
When looking at the rock formations, it's pretty apparent that the island is of volcanic origin.
We were able to see a lighthouse on a small inhabited island Ilheu de Ferro.
The following couple of pics are taken after we had left the viewpoints and I made I quick stop in the middle of the road to take some shots. You can see how desert-like this island looks.
Here is the quad bike we rented for two days. Had such a great time driving it on the roads of this island. There was hardly any traffic so I was able to stop on the road.
Will do a post on it tomorrow about how we tried to search for caves, it's a fun one! Stay tuned.
Those viewpoints are great. The sea foam was printed on the photograph as if it were a painting. Beautiful place.
