A fun day at the Range with a little competition!

Good evening guys and gals. Todays little adventure consists of a day at the range with a new friend! If you've been following any of my blogs you would have read in my hunt for fatwood that I was meeting a friend at the range around 1030am. It was not going to be a regular range day, that's for sure. We had planned to do a little shooting competition. Have multiple stages set up to test different calibers at different ranges. We each had a small caliber gun, high powered rifles, and a bow! Yet our gear was completely different!

My gear consisted of a:
-1940's ish COOEY model 60 22LR, bolt action with a 10 round under barrel tube magazine.
-a Late 70's remington model 760 pump action 30-06 mounted with a Nikon monarch 3 scope
-a 15$ self made pvc 45lbs draw horse bow

Nico's set up

  • an SKS with a TAPCO stock with 2x 5 round mags(max ammo in Canada for centerfire)
  • a remington 700 PCR with a Magpul bipod and Vortex scope chambered in 6.5 creedmore
  • a pse stinger 55pound draw compound bow.

I knew that I have certain advantages such as being able to put off arrows quicker. Where I knew Nico's rifle was absolutely dialed for the long range. I still need to properly set up my rifle. Starting with a steadier rest.

The 3 stages that we set up were

10 pop bottles. Gun wise we were pretty even. Even though my 22 is bolt action while Nico's SKS is semi auto I didn't have to reload.
Our next stage was the long range a 100m target and a 200m gong

And like I said Nico's set up is dialed for this. I also learned this weekend I need to take more time to set up my rifle better.
Now the third and final stage was the archery section. 3 targets 10m, 15m and 20m.

We are both fresh archers so I figured the only advantages on the archery range was going to be the speed of which I could release my arrows. Now we did have a point system for accuracy. the bottles on the first stage are all 1 sec time deductions. the 200m gong was 20 secs and the archery targets were 1 sec with 5 sec bullseyes. I'll def say this though this was one of the best range days i've ever had. Learned a lot and know what I need to work to be a better and more consistent marksman. Now I just wish 30-06 bullets weren't so damn expensive.
To determine who was going to start us off there was only one way to decide...A game of rock paper scissors!

With me winning with a solid rock over his scissors I told Nico he could have the honors of going first. So if you want to see my run and the full gear break down just check out the video I made on the competition.

Hope you guys enjoyed this. It was a lot of fun and now I am determined more then ever to improve.
