"Meditations in Thunder" (Original Piano Improvisation), Vibes Web3 Music Competition , Week 9

in Vibes16 days ago

I spend a lot of my time working on the African American side of my musical heritage, and gospel music is a big portion of my compositional and pianistic output as I prepare for my children's choir (today, actually)!

A big part of what makes gospel music work is the "vamp" section, based out of West African chant where my ancient ancestors are from -- this is the exciting section that takes a key portion of the message and repeats it until it gets into the souls of the listeners, often improvised over vocally by the soloist with additional encouraging information (or, some amazing vocal skills, or BOTH).

In this improvisation, I just started with the chant idea and went on over to the bottom of the piano keyboard that I love so much -- I love a bass line more than anything else in music, hence the name of the piece ... you will hear that 3.5 octave bass side rolling on through, somewhere between jazz and blues! Enjoy!
