Hey Folks! Do still remember Ghosts' n Goblins? veteran gamers they will certainly know Ghosts' n Goblins, a game series platformer by Capcom. This game is known to have high difficulty so it often appears on the list of the most difficult games to complete. Now, 35 years after the first game was released, Capcom is reviving the game again with Ghosts' n Goblins Resurrection for Nintendo.
The story in the original version, which was released on an arcade platform in 1985 is very simple. Players will play as a knight named Arthur who must help Princess Prin-Prin who was kidnapped by Satan. For that, players must pass through various areas in the Demon Realm and face its inhabitants before they can face the kidnapper.
Ghosts' n Goblins has simple gameplay, players only need to attack the opponent, and jump to get through the obstacles or enemy attacks. Arthur will lose his armor if he touches the enemy, and die if he hits the opponent or attack in this condition. You can get new armor or weapons by destroying the various chests you find. But you have to be careful because some of the chests you encounter contain traps!
And thanks to the simple controls, anyone can immediately understand the game mechanics that this series has to offer. And it is preserved in Ghosts' n Goblins Resurrection. Broadly speaking, the only two main actions gamers will use are jumping and attacking. As technology advances, this remake of the original game looks even better, especially in the visual field. ;)
For Ghosts' n Goblin revival is an exercise in realizing that you are not as good at video games as you might think. Capcom's newest 2D platformer is tough at the best of times and unfair at the worst, making an experience that's hard to recommend for a large number of people, but would be a catnip for the few looking to challenge.
Revival is a remake of the 1985 classic, though closer to the original arcade than the next NES port, rebuilt in storybook art style. Fans of the original game will recognize chapters that are lifted directly from the source material, but are mostly redefined to be a little faster and less repetitive. There are several difficulty levels and a temporary hold for the difficulty option after dying repeatedly in one section temporarily makes the game easier, but the highest difficulty available at the start tells you that's how Ghosts' n Goblin is meant to be played.
That's where most of the discussion of revival will take place so let's start there, do this game too tough? Unfortunately there is no single answer to that question. You can be a newcomer to the series and a difficult platformer in general and revel in the easiest difficulties with its built-in immortality. You can also be an experienced player chewing on Dark Souls prone and finding intermediate difficulty frustrating enough to contemplate throwing your controllers against the wall. Unless you're looking for some challenge, which is the heart of the game, I don't think Ghosts n 'Goblin is for you.
If you are looking for that challenge, the Resurrection got a lot of things right and some things wrong. The difficulty level determines the number of enemies on the screen and the number of checkpoints. Each area has its own checkpoint, but optional Rebirth flag checkpoints can be made within the area. This can be a godsend for the difficult parts, although it lies ahead of the tedious parts rather than the difficult ones.
The game boss fights are fantastic. They are inspired by boss fights throughout the series, but feature new twists and test players in reading enemy stories more than simply reacting to them. One boss has you ride a dragon and do as much damage as possible before it lands, another boss asks you to turn off the lights around the arena as the boss changes shape to make it visible only in light or darkness. They are all smart and they feel they are fairer than most of the other players.
And aesthetically, Resurrection is a mixed bag. There have been times where I have watched the game and immediately understood what Capcom is aiming for with a new art style. As a still painting, Resurrection is beautiful to look at, with beautifully colored environments and textured characters that look like children's fairy tales sitting on canvas. However, when things start to move, the animation is less like a storybook come to life than a flash animation from a storybook. There were uncontrollably raised eyebrows whenever I looked too closely at the protagonist Arthur walking along the stage or the boss swirling around the stage. It's never bad, but it's often weird.
Ghosts' n Goblins Resurrection is a modern update without sacrificing what people really liked about the original, but it can be harsh if you think the original is too tough. There's a lot of excitement to this game, but ultimately for people who already know they'll love it. ;)
