(Game Review) "Doom Eternal"

in Hive Gaming3 years ago

This is a review of a gamer Doom Eternal. The game is available on the PS4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Doom Eternal is a first-person shooter developed by id Software. You play as a demon slayer who has to save earth from being overrun by demonic forces. Your task is to halt the invasion by killing the hell priests and the game sees you on a relentless blood-filled death march to hunt them down. The game has a solo campaign, and also an online multiplayer mode.

What is the Game like to Play

Well, if you've never played Doom it's a run-and-gun shooter where standing still is akin to digging your own grave, demon slayers who don't move die. So, you have to be on your toes shoot enemies rip them apart with melee attacks, and get on the front foot. The controls are smooth and responsive and the arsenal of weapons available to you as your progress is truly wonderful. The guns range from rifles, shotguns, laser-based weapons, and some of the later game ones are absolutely devastating. Each gun can be modded with a specific firing option such as projectile explosives, scopes for snipers, and many other variations.

You have a chainsaw to rip up demons in close quarters and if the enemy starts glowing you can tear them to pieces with your own hands, granting you lots of loot. One thing I did notice in this game is that the ammo felt a little bit scarcer than in the previous installment. I found myself running out of ammo way too often and the game seems to incentivize you to use melee attacks to obtain more ammo. I think it would have been better for the game if they'd have just given you more ammo in the first instance because it's really just an action-packed shooter and having to go and look for ammo all the time kind of breaks that kind of cycle.

The solo campaign is extensive and the developers have definitely added a more varied and interesting game world this time. There are some fantastic levels with great architectural design and challenging layouts. You also have the fortress of doom ship which acts as a hub between missions where you can also visit the demon prison to practice your playing skills. One thing I noticed in Doom Eternal it seems to have more focus on platforming than in the previous title. It's not a bad thing but it does feel a bit off having to deal with platform jumping in a game that's essentially about pure violence.

I did enjoy the double jump dash and wall climb sections because they can be quite tricky and it's quite satisfying when you get past those ones. The game features a multiplayer battle mode but for people hoping for mass deathmatches you're going to be disappointed again, instead, battle mode pits one doom slayer against two human-controlled demons and their underlings. It is relatively enjoyable but I can't help but feel it's another missed opportunity by the developers. Don't get me wrong this is a fantastic solo experience but it could be so much more in multiplayer. If they just added a vast amount of modes like deathmatch team, deathmatch, capture the flag, etc.

A few of the other features include runes and suit perk points to increase the effectiveness of your slayer and there are many collectibles secrets and cheat codes to unlock as you progress through the main campaign. Visually, it's a stunning game with beautiful graphics and a very smooth finish the enemies look fantastic beautiful in a horrific kind of way the weapons are awesome and the effects are amazing. The game does have a photo mode but it's an absolute disaster and has some of the worst functionality I've ever experienced but it is in beta. So, hopefully, this will improve in time. The sound is a benchmark for the industry with fantastic music that gets the blood pumping. The sound effects they're loud impactful and awesome the voice acting, however, well it's fine it's not going to win any awards I'll put it that way.

What's Good and What's Bad

What's good: It's one of the most entertaining shooters game money can buy. The visuals are stunning, the levels are varied and well designed, the gunplay is fantastic, and the enemies are really interesting. The game has great music, good new elements to make it feel fresh, and overall it's just an absolute blast from start to finish.
What's Bad: The multiplayer options are very poor and I honestly can't understand why ammo seems a bit scarce. The platforming sections although challenging seem a little bit too frequent.

What's the Verdict

Doom Eternal is a fantastic first-person shooter game, that's as exciting entertaining and adrenaline-fueled, as its predecessor. It adds enough new elements to spice things up but doesn't stray too far from the formula that made the series so popular. It's a stunning game to look at, the audio is perfect, and the level design and variation seems to have taken a step up in this installment. The only disappointment is the lack of a decent array of multiplayer modes I honestly can't understand why they don't add more options because this game is made for the chaotic carnage of online multiplayer. So, in summary, it's a quality game for adrenaline junkies who crave another whirlwind of violence, demon-slaying, and headbanging music.
