Assassin's Creed Revelations - Review

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

The last part of Ezio Auditore da Firenze trilogy is just the perfect ending. Up until now, we've seen the growth of Ezio in 2 separate stages of his life, and Revelations continues the trend, giving up the master assassin somewhere around the age of 50-60.

Differences from the previous games

Being build on the same engine as the last 2 games, not that the development had other choice in 1 year of development, it's just normal that a lot of assets will be recycled and reused from the previous games. The good part is that the games doesn't feel this way. The Turkish vibes are present all over Constantinople, and with a bit of graphic upgrade the engine supported during development, Assassin's Creed Revelations is the best looking game from the Ezio trilogy.

Map

From its predecessor, where the map would have a lot of open fields, Revelations uses every bit of space. It's basically loaded with things that you can do, which is the main reason that I haven't used the quick travel too much. In fact, I think I used it around 10 times in my 44 hours of gameplay.

Gameplay

The gameplay is the same from brotherhood, and it gets nothing but improvements. One of the best that is making the parkour change a little is the blade hook. Also used for some new combat finisher's, the hook blade is making your life a lot easier when climbing tall buildings, which the game will make you do a lot.

The recruits system gets some more layers, from the basic mission saving citizen's from an encounter with the guards, most of your assassin's gets a custom scene and mission. Before getting to the level of master assassin and being in charge of their own den in the city, they have to fulfill a mission alongside you.
Revelations (13).png
Besides that, more personality is added to the creed. Each assassin now comes with a favorite weapon, which is required in some missions in Europe, making you chose more carefully in what mission you send your recruits as training to become assassins.

Bomb system

Revelations (19).png
I have a single question about this system. Why did they give up on it after this game?

You can basically create 4 types of bombs, that each come with multiple customization. Impact, timed, sticky and tripwires are just the main type. The power of gunpowder used to control the range of explosion and also the effects, for creating smoke, spreading oil or nails to slow down your pursuers and many others is leaving you with countless possibilities to play around. The only annoying thing about this was not having enough enemies to test my creations on.

Game economy

It took Ubisoft just 3 games, to come with an economic system in which you don't get to be a millionaire by the end of it. Some simple fixes here and there, and you now have to wait for the money to come to the bank, so you can spend something. A tip from my part, unlock the thieves ability and hire some, find a place where enough people pass by and hide inside a hay or cart. Your thieves will make money while you can go and have some dinner (that's what I did). In this time the bank also gathers some money based on your city progress, a win-win while you sit down and relax.

Revelations

The title is not just for nothing, a lot of pieces come back into place and the whole story between Altair and Ezio it's just making more sense. Especially since you get to play as Altair again.
Revelations (5).png
The story of Altair gets completed after being left incomplete for 2 games. Memory inside memory, Desmond is jumping between Ezio and Altair after Ezio recovers each one of the 5 keys to the Masyaf library.

Ezio still being Ezio

Being old is not something that can stop Ezio from being a gentleman around ladies. A last heart to conquer for Ezio, and one to remain alongside him.
Revelations (21).png
Revelations (22).png
Sofia is also the reason in the game for which we have the most badass mission in the game. The full force of the assassins thirsty for blood fighting alongside Ezio in a full attack on the docks against the ottoman forces.

Our master assassin is one of the few that get to live his life and finish it outside the order.
Revelations (33).png
The end of the game is presenting us an Ezio that is ready to put aside the assassin life and just continue the rest of his life peacefully. And he manages to do so. If you didn't know, here's the last piece of Ezio life: Embers. If you're a fan of Ezio, this movie it's a must

Inside the same chapter, Ezio finally reaches the library of Masyaf, where again one of the best scenes in the game takes place, Ezio wisdom of master assassin is poured over the scene, which I think it what makes me appreciate it.

The lost archive DLC

One DLC that hopefully will still be playable, at least for a while, until Ubisoft decides to kill it... well, actually they kinda already tried, because they don't sell it on their goddamn store... The gold edition which also includes this DLC is available only on Steam, so if you want to try it, there you go: Steam Page

The lost archive is not actually part of the main game, you don't play as an Assassin, or, at least, you play as one trapped inside the Animus. The lost archive is following the story of subject 16, and how it's brain came to an inside meltdown, more or less tried to become one with the memories of Ezio and Altair.
Revelations (29).png
Starting out the DLC with you going down to your grave is just something else, while hearing your funeral, but seeing nobody, is not a very pleasant image, but it makes more sense along the way. Memories of your past are actually unlocked, under the same form, hearing a voice or seeing partially an image projected on the wall.
Revelations (31).png

Revelations (30).png
The story of subject 16 is kind of tragic, with a lot of sacrifices, making him an even more important in the overall universe of Assassin's Creed, than what was just a portrait in the first 3 games, a mystery man that already went through the whole process but was pushed beyond limits until nothing could save him anymore.

Final impression

The final piece of Ezio trilogy is a masterpiece is my perspective, especially since the main focus appears to the story, filling up any holes left out previously at the perfect moment since we will not see Ezio again in the series. The gameplay manages to be innovative, even through most of it's taken from the previous game.

This chapter has a fantastic ending of Ezio's story and I like it the most.

Assassin's Creed Revelations is the best looking game from the Ezio trilogy.

I agree on that.

They really nailed Ezio's character development throughout his games and movie. Goes to show that giving a character room to breathe and develop gives much more flavour to the games than just putting a bland dude in an exotic location.

Yep, it got to the point where knowing a certain character is just common knowledge.
