If you aren't posting Shorts on YouTube you are missing out on new subscribers

I can't believe it took me this long 😩

I created my YouTube channel in August of 2017. I never really took it seriously for most of the time since then and now. I mainly just wanted to have a place to store all of my 4K video game footage for free. It has worked great for that and saved me a lot of space on my SSDs and cloud storage. I haven't earned many subscribers in the 6 years that I've had my channel, but I've posted over 600 videos. That means yes, I am one of the few people you will meet in this world who has more videos than he does subscribers. At the start of August 2023, I had a measly 400 subscribers.

YouTube is my most used social media app by far. I consume content on YouTube like no other. I mainly stick to the longer-form content from my favorite creators. It wasn't until recently that I started looking at shorts from those same creators I was already following. I began to realize that I had been completely sleeping on one of the most popular portions of YouTube in 2023. I noticed that people who struggled to consistently get 100k views on their long videos were often getting millions of views on their shorts. It was then I decided to force myself to post at least one short daily for a month to see what happens.

As of today, the best way to get discovered by new people on YouTube is to post shorts regularly. It's great if you have long videos to go along with that, but a large portion of the community has evolved into a shorts-only type of user. If you aren't posting shorts, those people will never find you. Plus, doesn't it sound a whole lot easier to get somebody to watch something that is 15 seconds long, rather than a video that is 10-20 minutes in length? People just don't have the attention span that they used to back in the day.

Since beginning to post shorts daily on YouTube, my subscriber count has been steadily increasing for the first time in years. It may not sound like much, but I've gained nearly 100 subscribers in less than 30 days, I think I'm still only on week 2 or 3 of the shorts journey. This has never happened on my channel. My shorts are usually getting a few thousand views, whereas my long videos are lucky to crack one hundred. I think you can see that I'm beginning to prove my point about growth on YouTube in 2023. I'm about to finally hit the 500 subscriber level that is required to become a paid YouTube partner. Sadly, I'm still nowhere close to having enough public watch hours or public shorts views, but progress is progress.

Next, I'm going to show you several examples of shorts that I've posted. I have tried content centered around gaming and comedy, sometimes even combining the two into one short.

I'm sure you can tell I'm also focusing on having fun throughout this process. Without the fun factor, I wouldn't be able to remain consistent on a daily basis. I've found that getting ahead on your work and scheduling your videos in advance makes the process a whole lot easier too.

These numbers I'm about to show you aren't anything earth-shattering, but it's a very clear improvement over where I was before I started posting shorts.

I'm pleased with very obvious proof that my efforts are not all for nothing. I haven't exploded in popularity just yet, but at least some new people are finally discovering my channel.

I just want to make sure that anybody trying to run a successful YouTube channel realizes that shorts are essential, especially if you're just starting out.

You probably are like me and know that YouTube isn't the future of social media unless they adopt some sort of Web3 protocol, which is unlikely anytime soon since they seem to like to be in control. However, for you, YouTube is where the bulk of video watchers still are. I can't just wait and wait for it to die. Even if this ends up being a wasted effort, I will at least know I made an attempt. Plus, like I mentioned before, I'm having fun with all of this so I really don't dwell on whether I grow a large following or not. If it happens great, but until then I'm just going to continue doing what I love.

One last thing

Please subscribe to my channel if you haven't already done so. I post tons of videos, both short and long, and I also do live streams playing video games. I appreciate any and all support even if all you do is subscribe and never even watch anything.

Shorts are great for growing subscribers to a channel but sadly pretty useless for much else unless you manage to get millions of views on each one. A subscriber from shorts very rarely translate to a long form viewer. I considered making them for a while after they enabled monetization for them but for a channel like mine with 2,7k subs it doesn't feel worth it when I'll have to get roughly 40k views on a short to earn the same as 1k views on a long.

There is close to no engagement on the average short. I'm not sure why people randomly subscribe. What you are doing with your stuff has been working bro!

Your work is able to be appreciated. I understand, you are not much interested in channel before but that's amazing that you have uploaded many videos than your subscribers.

Impressive results, I am thinking to upload shorts on my channel as well.

I made some youtube shorts about my art but they barely got any views and no new subscribers. Now I started making let's plays with commentary but I find it hard to find what to say.

The first few seconds have to have an attention grabber to do well.

We already know you as the video person, so it no doubt that your shorts will be doing well on YouTube. I wish all the best as your subscribers increases.

Thank you. I'll report back after another month. should be past 500 subs by then I'd think

I got a similar idea for my written content at some point in time next year start making videos and same as in any other platform I think short length content will eventually take over all platforms as the taste for short content keeps expanding, I dont use Youtube per say but do consume its content, there goes my Subscribe still 🤘

I still watch regular videos on YouTube, but I watch a ton of shorts too so we are slowly moving towards a new average.

I prefer videos rather than shorts. Youtube made it so difficult to have videos monetized. Well, this is centralization. You have to do what they want. Also, any video platform on HIVE would never compete with Youtube as 7-day revenue on vlog is not sensible, imo.

YouTube is not the place to get rich anymore. Paid advertisements are the main money makers. That and merch sales. You don't get either of those unless your channel is already massive.

Amazing work on growing your channel. The introduction of short form content really has changed the strategy for social media promotion. Even though I'm not so much of a shorts fan, I definitely have been able to find other channels through them. By the way, you have my support. 👍

Thanks! I didn't think I would like making Shorts, but it's a lot of fun. I do appreciate the support!

I honestly prefer Tiktok, the ease of going viral there is impressive, I have a few videos doing reviews and they get good views.

I loathe Tiktok's interface. I have yet to get more than a few thousand views on anything on TikTok. I know somebody with over 50k followers and they barely get 1000 views per upload. I don't understand Tiktok, nor do I want to hahaha.

Succeed on Youtube is really hard, especially if you are making gaming content because there are too many gaming channels. I hope they change the monetization requirement for other territories, because there still several countries where you need to reach 1000 subscribers to been able to monetize.

It's nearly impossible actually. I see so many great channels die off because they just can't keep going.

Well this is a neat trick. @tipu curate 10
