Anime Game Mini Review / Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen

Dragon Ball is so well known that even if you ask a person who has never seen their anime, they will recognize Goku quite easily and that is because the entire Dragon Ball saga is highly regarded worldwide, very few animes/manga have the level of popularity that this anime has achieved around the world and that is something incredible. I remember playing many Dragon Ball games in my childhood, most of them were the typical fighting games, but also, most of these games were based on the Z saga, that is, Dragon Ball Z, and I don't think I remember (besides the game I will tell you about next), another video game based on the first Dragon Ball, when Goku was still a child, being this saga, one of the best (personally) besides being the most fun of all, the one that started it all.

I didn't remember the name of the game I was going to tell you about, because besides having a quite long name, it also had some words in Japanese and was quite confusing, but as always, on the internet you can find everything and that game is: Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen. A game that is based on the first adventures of Goku, since he met Bulma until the saga when he fights against Piccolo. This saga is mythical and marked a before and after in the manga/anime. After that Dragon Ball evolved to such a level and so drastically that the current power levels in Dragon Ball are totally absurd and Goku became a dumbass protagonist, but that's a topic for another post.

Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen, is in Japanese language, but fortunately a group of fans set out to translate it into English, and that's why, thanks to the fans. In itself, this Dragon Ball game, is quite rare, because it is not the typical fighting game that anyone would be used, in this case, Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen is a kind of interactive game and RPG. And yes, with this union of video game genres anyone would get the face of WTF, but as strange as this may sound, it is a pretty fun game.

In game style it is rare, but I will try to explain it in the best way: Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen is based on the whole Dragon Ball saga, from the moment Goku meets Bulma, goes to the Martial Arts Tournament and fights Piccolo. In a kind of graphic adventure game, in which we will be reliving everything seen in the anime/manga, and there will be moments in which the game will give us certain options and we must choose the right one according to what happened in the anime/manga, so we must have seen the chapters before, and although the questions are not difficult, from time to time we will find some that maybe we will not know the answer.

That's on one side of the gameplay, on the other side, we have the fighting system, which is quite addictive, because, it's always one player fighting against the computer, so, both characters are focused on one stage. You as a player always control Goku, and the computer the enemy in question depending on the situation. The two characters get closer and at the moment we are going to collide with the enemy, we must select one of the attacks that we have assigned to the buttons. That is, before each fight, we must assign to each button an attack, thus being able to create strategies as it suits us, it's a pretty weird system, but it's pretty easy to learn and it's pretty intuitive, only maybe I don't know how to explain it in the right way. But in a few words, Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen is quite fun, but also a quite rare game due to its fighting system, which mixes some video game generators and the result is a very particular video game, a kind of graphic adventure / visual novel and real time RPG game, a rare game, but in the good sense.
