Very few current games that are made today maintain that charisma in the expressiveness of the characters, the only current game that comes to mind that does that is Cuphead.

Definitely agree. It is a shame too as expression is such a key piece to bridging that gap of game/gamer. Look at the fanfare that Battletoads got when it first released. The "attitude" of 2D mascots during the 16-bit era such as Sonic or Aero the Acro-Bat, etc. Expression is a lost art.
