Beavis and Butt-Head is one of the most irreverent series of the best era of MTV, a duo of friends that due to the personality of each of them you can understand that there are many people who did not like this series at the time, even today I'm sure that many people would not like it. But personally this is a series that I liked a lot, it was not my favorite but I got to entertain me enough at the time where I sat watching TV for hours, being something that nowadays I no longer do. Besides the fact that the personality of these characters was not the best, their artistic style was not the best either, that is to say, it had an art style that can be considered as "dirty and sloppy", with a quite "ugly" character design, although once again, personally this was something that I liked and I think it reflected quite well an era of MTV. Surprisingly there are video games of this series, being this something I didn't know. Today I will tell you about one of them, which turned out to be quite interesting.
The story is quite simple, just like any other episode of the series, it all starts with a simple conflict which in order to solve it we must live a series of events very characteristic of the humor so marked of the series. It all starts when the duo of friends want to go to the concert of Gwar, this being one of the favorite bands of Beavis and Butt-Head, but by chance when a dog that appears surprisingly steals the concert tickets they had just bought, the duo of friends chase the dog, but it swallows the tickets and vomiting are destroyed by a lawn mower and the pieces of the tickets are sent to fly all over the city. So now they will have to recover those pieces to be able to go to the long-awaited concert. As usual in the series, things escalate quickly and what started out as something simple turned into an event that got out of hand, but always with the humor so characteristic of the series. Graphically it is a pretty good copy of its animated counterpart, especially the design of Beavis and Butt-Head, which are very similar to the animated series, even having their characteristic voices and laughter.
The game maintains the "dirty and sloppy" design that they emphasize in the series, so although it may "look bad", it is quite the opposite, the developers respected the essence of the animated series in this particular video game. One of the most recognizable aspects of Beavis and Butt-Head is their taste for Heavy Metal and logically this is an aspect that we will find in this video game, where we will be in constant melodies with heavy tones, a lot of heavy rock, but also on certain occasions we can hear melodies a little more relaxed, although the frenetic, hard and heavy rhythms predominate much more.
One of the most emblematic and recognizable aspects of these characters, besides their design, are the voices of Beavis and Butt-Head, which sound like two complete goofballs, in addition to their iconic laughs that were part of the adolescence of many people in the 90s, I'm more than sure that 9 out of 10 people who watched the series tried to imitate both the voices of these characters and their laughs. And this game has that, in addition to also have certain sounds like belching or other sounds that express these characters depending on the situation, which in addition to the design so faithful to the animated series, voices or sound effects that can make these characters makes it an excellent and faithful video game adaptation of their counterparts in the animated series.
Beavis and Butt-Head (Mega Drive) is a game that encompasses at least two genres, the platformer and the adventure game genre (the latter is one of my favorite genre of video games). It has a great diversity of things to do and it is a game that has different game modes, which makes it quite an entertaining adventure as you have to figure out what to do to complete or overcome a certain obstacle using the necessary objects to accomplish it. The game has a level selection menu, so we can start with the one we want but taking into account that in certain levels we will need some item that is in another scenario, so in a way it has elements of backtraking, although this is something quite characteristic of adventure games.
Beavis and Butt-Head can jump and run like any other platform game, even being able to attack the enemies that we find by throwing paper balls with a straw, this being a ranged attack, but we can also use various items to attack enemies like a stick that has a boxing glove on one side. The use of items to fulfill certain requirements is essential and is the basic rule of any game of the graphic adventure genre. In short, it is a very entertaining game, very funny and that managed to represent in an excellent way one of the best animated series of MTV.
By the way, last year SNL had one of their best sketches of the last years, where they do an interpretation of this duo of friends. I leave it here in case any of you haven't seen it.
Beavis and Butt-Head es una de las series más irreverentes de la mejor época d MTV, un dúo de amigos que debido la personalidad de cada uno de ellos se puede llegar a entender que hay mucha gente no le haya gustado esta serie en su momento, incluso en la actualidad aún más estoy seguro que a mucha gente no le gustaría. Pero personalmente esta es una serie que me gustaba bastante, no era mi favorita pero me llegaba a entretener bastante en la época donde me sentaba a ver televisión durante horas, siendo algo que actualmente ya no hago. Además de que la personalidad de estos personajes no era la mejor, su estilo artístico tampoco lo era, es decir, tenía un estilo de arte que puede ser considerado como “sucio y descuidado”, con un diseño de personajes bastante “feo”, aunque una vez más, personalmente esto era algo que a mi si me gustaba y creo que reflejaba bastante bien una época de MTV. Sorprendentemente hay videojuegos de esta serie, siendo esto algo que no lo sabía. Hoy les hablaré sobre uno de ellos, que resultó ser bastante interesante.
La historia es bastante simple, así como cualquier episodio de la serie todo empieza con un simple conflicto el cual para poder resolverlo debemos de vivir una serie de eventos muy característico al humor tan marcado de la serie. Todo inicia cuando el dúo de amigos quieren ir al concierto de Gwar, siendo esta una de las bandas favoritas de Beavis y Butt-Head, pero por azares del destino cuando un perro que aparece sorpresivamente les roba las entradas al concierto que justamente habían comprado, el dúo de amigos persiguen al perro, pero este se traga las entradas y al vomitarlas son destruidas por una máquina de cortar césped y los trozos de las entradas son enviados a volar por toda la ciudad. Por lo que ahora deberán recuperar esos trozos para poder ir al tan anhelado concierto. Como es costumbre en la serie todas las cosas escalan rápidamente y lo que empezó con algo sencillo se convirtió en un evento que se les salió de las manos, pero siempre con el humor tan característico de la serie. Gráficamente es un calco bastante bueno a su contraparte de la serie animada, especialmente el diseño de Beavis y Butt-Head, los cuales son muy parecidos a lo de la serie animada, teniendo incluso sus características voces y risas.
El juego mantiene el diseño “sucio y descuidado” que enfatizan en la serie, por lo que a pesar de que se puede “ver mal”, es todo lo contrario, los desarrolladores respetaron la esencia de la serie animada en este videojuego tan particular. Unos de los aspectos más reconocibles de Beavis y Butt-Head es su gusto por el Heavy Metal y lógicamente esto es un aspecto que vamos a encontrar en este videojuego, donde estaremos en constante melodías con tonalidades pesadas, mucho rock pesado, pero también en ciertas ocasiones podremos escuchar melodías un poco más relajadas, aunque predominan mucho más los ritmos frenéticos, duros y pesados.
Unos de los aspectos más emblemáticos y reconocibles de estos personajes además de su diseño, son las voces de Beavis y Butt-Head, las cuales suenan como dos bobos al completo, además de sus risas tan icónicas que formaron parte de la adolescencia de muchas personas en los años 90, incluso estoy más que seguro que 9 de cada 10 personas que veían la serie intentaron imitar tanto las voces de estos personajes como sus risas. Y este juego cuenta con eso, además de también contar con ciertos sonidos como eructos u otros sonidos que expresaran estos personajes según sea la situación, con lo cual además del diseño tan fiel a la serie animada, las voces o efectos de sonido que pueden realizar estos personajes hace que sea una excelente y fiel adaptación a videojuego de sus contrapartes de la serie animada.
Beavis and Butt-Head (Mega Drive) es un juego que engloba al menos dos géneros, el de plataformas y el género de aventuras gráficas (este último es de mi genero favoritos de los videojuegos). Tiene una gran diversidad de cosas por hacer y es un juego que tiene distintas modalidades de juego, con lo que llega a ser una aventura bastante entretenida al tener que averiguar qué hacer para completar o superar cierto obstáculo utilizando los objetos necesarios para poder cumplirlo. El juego cuenta con un menú de selección de niveles, por lo que podremos empezar por el que queremos pero teniendo en cuenta que en ciertos niveles necesitaremos algún ítem que se encuentre en otro escenario, por lo que de cierta forma tiene elementos de backtraking, aunque esto es algo bastante característico de las aventuras gráficas.
Beavis and Butt-Head pueden saltar y correr como cualquier otro juego de plataformas, incluso pudiendo atacar a los enemigos que nos encontremos lanzándoles bolas de papel con una pajilla, siendo este un ataque a distancia, pero también podremos usar diversos ítems para atacar a enemigos como un palo que tiene puesto en uno de sus lados un guante de boxeo. La utilización de los ítems para poder cumplir con ciertos requisitos es esencia y es la regla básica de cualquier juego del género de aventura gráfica. En definitiva es un juego bastante entretenido, muy divertido y que logró representar de manera excelente de una de las mejores series animadas de MTV.
Por cierto, el año pasado SNL tuvo uno de sus mejores sketchs de los últimos años, donde hacen una interpretación de este duo de amigos. Se los dejo aca por si alguno no lo ha visto.
