The Playstation 4: Thoughts from an Xbox Guy

in Hive Gaminglast year

I'm a walking contradiction. I absolutely love the Xbox, but if there's one thing I can't give up on is trying out new tech and so out of nowhere I had the hunch to purchase a PS4.
Sure, the PS5 is out but with how limited stocks are I'm willing to bet this little black rectangle will be getting some more support, hence my purchase. It wasn't too expensive, but it was more expensive than it should've been.
The PS4's value has gone up like fine wine, a couple of years ago it used to be cheaper than this, but alas, demand went up and I understand why now: It's a wonderful piece of kit.

As for controllers, mine came with this off-brand skull one that works perfectly fine and feels great in the hand, and my friend borrowed his older one since his PS4 offed itself. Now I've got some 2 player action on Nidhogg available and that's just great.

One thing I immediately fell in love with was the design here, it's wonderful. Honestly, it's one of the best designed consoles I've ever seen and it looks great on just about any shelf I put it on. Sony did a great job and it's something I expected already to be honest.
Whilst Microsoft's consoles tend to be more utilitarian looking, Sony goes for the clean angles, the curves, the look of the future and I love that.

You can clearly see their design evolution even back in the 90's

Where as the PS1 fat had a very modern design for the 90's, the PSone (Slim model) had that very 2000s CD player look. That was in fact my first non-Nintendo console and I remeber thinking it looked so modern, futuristic and also a little cute.

One advantage of this angular rectangle shape is that unlike the bulky fat Xbox One, it doesn't block the lower quarter of your TV if you're short on space... This is kind of important for me as I am short on space on the living room.
It still doesn't beat the Series S but at least it doesn't get in the way as well. It's tidy and nice.

Now as for games mine came with the The Last of Us: Remastered.
I was not expecting much but... wow. Just from the beginning, this is wonderful. The game looks beautiful and the story has already captivated me enough.
I LOVE it.
I'm playing the game entirely in Portuguese, and the dub is surprisingly good, in fact, I left my system in Portuguese as Sony does such a good job translating their games.

I don't need translations, but when it's well done, I like it, same as movies and it's the reason why I watch Dragon Ball Z or Pokémon in Portuguese (my hispanic friends can problably relate with the Spanish dub too).

The menu looks as wonderful as the system itself, even if I did find it a bit confusing for a first time user.
I liked all the shortcuts on top such as friends, notifications and settings but I didn't like much how all the recent apps are shown and how the game library is a little "tucked away."

How did I get all these games so fast anyway? Well my friend. Sony is now trying to compete with Gamepass, so I did the logical thing and signed up for 3 months for PS Plus Deluxe.

The game selection is nowhere near as good as Gamepass (which I'm still using on PC and playing Persona 5 now ironically enough).
But it does have some nice games. The Ubisoft catalog is a little small, but there are some great Assassin's Creed games in there.

Also,

Le cute cat game (it's actually really good.)

I was very disappointed with the selection of classic games on offer so I hope more are added. There are some great games so far, but Sony needs more if it wants to compete.
They have such a huge backlog of PS1, PS2 and PSP games to use but they just aren't using them so far. As of right now, Deluxe is a huge missed opportunity.
Sure, I'm enjoying Gravity Rush Remastered, Wild Arms and my dearest Mr. Driller, but come on, Tekken 2? Not even 3?

Just... wow.

Despite that however, I'm really enjoying the system and I think Sony did a great job here, it's very interesting to see what I missed out on the (almost) past decade by playing on Xbox, Nintendo and PC.
I'll definitely enjoy my 3 months of PS Plus and if by then I find it worthwhile to keep the console, then I'll do it, if not, then I might just get a new GPU or something else.

Anyway, those are the mad ramblings of an Xbox fanboy falling in love with the Playstation, thanks for reading <3

Sort:

Tekken was my favorite game to play with my friend back in the day on ps1
Kingdom hearts on the ps2 along with Jak and Daxter

Luckily we're getting KH this month on PS Plus, so I'll be giving that a shot!

Last Friday I downloaded an emulator and some games to have fun for a while. When I see the PS1 photo y can remeber many beautiful things.

Great post! I’m seriously thinking to buy a PS4 for my living room 😌maybe It’s a good funnies way to waste the time with a friend.

On PS Plus they need to add more PS1 and PS2 games, because there are many gems from the past that are worth playing.

I had the first three PlayStations but I couldn't buy the PS4 because in my country they are too expensive, nowadays I play more on my PC, however I have always preferred to play on consoles xD

I agree! Way too many games the catalog is missing out on.

I've had every Playstation console except for the 4 and 5 so this is being an interesting experience. It's really expensive here too but I was lucky to get one cheap :D

Truly love the PS4! I find myself gaming on the Xbox consoles more often, but I can't deny that the PlayStation family of consoles have some amazing exclusives. God of War, The Last of Us, and Demon's Souls in particular are all top notch!!

Agreed!

For me the Xbox is more convenient and I find myself using it way more, but the Playstation has something special around it and I love it.

The games are absolutely out of this world. All incredible cinematic experiences.

Unfortunately when it comes to third party, Xbox is still king haha

This happens a lot in technology. I've mostly used an iPhone so far, but when I see a good Android phone, I like it. They have really good designs and the battery lasts well.

I think they need to improve their game library a bit and I think they'll get there in time. They can add enough games to PS+ as well. Love your new toy man, enjoy it!

Maaannn, I've been using Androids since 2009 but iPhones have always intrigued me so much. It looks like such a good user experience, maybe one day I'll pick an older one up or maybe the SE model.

And yeah, they definitely need more games.

That's cool! I have PS4 too, a lighter version (silver/gray) than the black one. I used to play FIFA 2022 but unfortunately, it's been months since I wasn't able to play it. Great review!

Thank you very much! Hope you can get some play time too

Sucks to hear that the PS Plus retro catalog is so limited, but hey, at least you got all of the PS4's new and shiny games available at hand!

I had only played with a PS4 two times: One at a friend's house that had borrowed a PS4 from someone else (and had Fortnite in it, but only could play like a minute before the internet got disconnected), and another time with someone who used to have a PS4 and Mortal Kombat X in it. I remember being quite impressed with how fast it played compared to MK9, and was definitely fun to try out.

I played X near completion on my PC and will probably do the same with 11 now on the PS4.

Going back to X feels awkward now lol

I understand you perfectly, I must say that I am also a fan of the Xbox, but recently I bought a ps4, the truth is that it is a console that is worth it, in my case I bought it rather for the exclusive titles!

Same for me.

It was mostly because of The Last of Us, but I'm now enjoying God of War and Spider-Man too.
I know those two are on the PC, but it's easier to bring my console to the living room 😜
