A couple days ago, a big announcement by Psyonix came out and its pretty darn exciting, their popular game Rocket League is finally getting a little brother! Rocket league: Sideswipe is now out on android and iOS and is actually a fun mobile game.
Off topic but this loading screen design is KILLER! I LOVE it!
Now I understand that some of you console/PC gamers do not like mobile games and games just clutter up important space on your phone. But here me out, coming from someone that feels that exact way, this game is actually fun and had me coming back after a couple times playing. I find myself downloading a game and playing it once, just to never touch it again and delete it, this game is different.
Psyonix is unlike a ton of triple-A companies, they actually care about the games produced and make some truly high end content for the competitive gamer. This game just released yesterday, and it is already jam-packed with content and a roadmap of future plans and extras. So let's begin!
Loyalty Rewards
Psyonix is rewarding all players that have played both RL and Sideswipe via linked Epic accounts. I logged in and was surprised by a screen that congratulated me and gave me these black market wheels called "Nuhai" that are inverted. For all content being decently new, It's nice to have some cool and attractive wheels to show off to opponents with. (These are animated too, but I cannot show that)
Weekly and Seasonal Challenges
Challenges are a major starter for a game like this, games like Rocket League can get pretty repetitive and boring, but this gives you a reason to hop on and get some extra XP or rewards to progress.
And this leads us to our next topic. . .
Rocket Pass For Mobile
Sideswipe at launch has a pass to unlock rewards and make your vehicle look unique. As far as I know, it is supposed to come out today but as of right now, my pass will not load and show me the rewards. I do know it is coming very soon if not right this second, as a pre-season pass was out when I joined the private launch.
Matchmaking
Currently, there are 3 modes and all of them are pretty fun and sit on the edge of your seat type stuff. Rocket League kept the important aspects of the predecessor while acclimating to the mobile style and mixing things to keep the game spicy. These modes include 1v1, 2v2, and Hoops.
Dont you DARE make fun of my rank just yet 😭
A Store??
Okay, it's not that surprising, Psyonix has to make money at some point... Nonetheless, I love that it is the same formatting as the PC Rocket League. This store style looks sleek, is constantly updated, and allows users to get some pretty cool and specific items. I am not sure if they will add mobile specific items, but it is still really cool. Every day you can receive a mystery item from the store for free, but you can check the contents of the pack and all of it is pretty unexciting (Still cool because it's free)
Don't like a drop you receive? Easy, you can salvage it for SP which is the currency used to buy things from the shop. I haven't looked into it but I assume you can earn SP but also buy SP in bulk if you find something in the store you like.
The gameplay is really fun to play, it has had me talking to myself midgame and getting way to excited about doing something cool. If all goes well, I will have a video attached to show a game I played. Forfeits are such a good feeling during gameplay because you destroyed someone on mobile, it's one thing on PC/Console but this just feels like a whole new level of greatness.
Wowza that match was an absolute wiping, and the highest XP amount I've gotten to date. Also the pass loaded after restarting the game for that video, so check out a first look of all of the items you can get from the pass this season! (Video was a POS with my iPhone XR and its weird cropping, I'm sorry and tried to fix it.)
If you want to download this amazing game, here is Android and Apple. I highly recommend giving it a try, a good replacement for scrolling through the same Instagram posts while waiting for people while out somewhere.
Until next time...
Very interesting! I have never played the original game, but I might have to give this one a try. There is a big enough fan base for the game that this should get a lot of attention I think.
You should! I found myself playing this way too often when I was bored or was waiting on something. It's really unique and I don't think any other developers have tried to make this idea before. I never would've thought RL would go mobile, yet alone the converting. Yet the way they did it is just ingenious.
Is it the same mechanics as the original game? Does it seem weird playing it on a smaller screen?
Uhh its hard to explain precisely, it has the same premise (jump and flip in the air, boost to the ball) but it is simplified for mobile. Most games that I've played had big areas for controls and it took up a ton of the screen, but this one doesn't at all. You barely notice its your phone once you start scoring.
