FTL: Faster Than Light and the elegance of simplicity [Eng | Spa]

in Hive Gaminglast year

Hello, Hive Gaming community!

Faster Than Light, the classic roguelike that became the norm of the "space captain" gaming experience with a permanent death twist and that marvelous and elegant design that is so addictive that it took me four days to finally decide what to say about this masterpiece, and yes, I'm calling it a masterpiece, after 20+ hours playing on hard mode and speed running it like a madman at the endpoint, you would hardly tell me I'm wrong, I can guarantee you that much. So I decided to embrace the captain role and lead you all towards the rebel fleet, we have to save the federation my friends, and if we all join together we can still do so, this game, even a decade old as it is, still deserves a second play.

Faster Than Light

Eleven years, the last time I played this work was the year it was launched, there was no advanced edition or mods back then and the base experience was marvelous at the time, I was a freshman in college and FTL was my place to go for refreshing my mind off the heavy league of Calculus III and Advance analytical algebra. Time passed by, and I moved forward, the federation was safe and old vices are hard to quit, back them I was addicted to League of Legends and used to play daily with a bunch of computer and math students at exactly eight, so it started to drift to the back of my mind as it engaged with nothing from within me.

But I found myself returning to it in 2014 when FTL: Advanced Edition showed up on the door, adding more plot, more species, more ships, and a hell of a lot bigger explosions, back them I was in the middle of something and didn't appreciate the gift I was given as It took me nine whole years to check the game, and fellow citizens of the federation, I regret waiting that long.

March 2023, I decided to revisit this old game stuck on my steam account, left for dead alone and wandering in the space of my library, as soon as I booted the Hivean with a cool ship name, I was back to be the space captain, putting old my old hat with a bunch of freshmen ready to train during the persecution of a lifetime.

It took me a total of 4 hours to beat the flagship of the rebels again, but the new weapons, species, varieties of tactics, and random events made it a different experience from the one in my memory, it flattened its imperfections, and It improved FTL's original design.

This improved design was the dream of the team behind this game, Subsetgames is their name, and they are but a couple of guys that subcontracted all the things they could not handle like plot and art, and made it big back when they did the Kickstarter campaign, those two programmers/pixel artist, are indie games geniuses.

The design of FTL from the start back in 2012 was already near pitch-perfect, it had its flaws and some weapons were more unbalanced than others, some builds were more likely to win the final fight and all, but with the advanced edition, they fixed those few mistakes and added a lot more content, for free may I add.

This present form is not the ultimate form, as the own developers have seen and encouraged the modding scene over their games in the forums to the point they included some in their main website, making the game more accessible to the modding scene, instead of doing what most indie games and let it evolve on the Steam platform.

I would call several of the mods a total rebuild of the experience, elongating the original experience a few couples runs in each of them as I am barely scratching the first one of the modern mods, and I found myself amazed at how far the community has gone since the launch of the original game.

Modding in this game is insane

Yet, Where is the simplicity I mentioned in the title? And the elegance? My father used to say when I was little, that the devil is in the details, and it could not be more valid than when we look at the details of the world of Faster Than Light. For many, these details are random and nonsensical, but for people like me that love to overthink and watch over each of the flavor texts, the general story that this game tells is amazing.

Let's start with the elegant part of this story, its criticism of the most regular storyline of the sci-fi genre, the concept of the "evil empire", when the game boots, we see ourselves as a runaway ship, there are no major reasoning and plot details, we are escaping the rebel fleet with mayor intel that could save the federation, this game "evil empire".

The federation is an entity composed of almost all intelligent races of the universe, they slowly grew over time and that would explain how you can easily see minor weapons and ships in sector zero and highly advanced ships and arsenals in sector eight, meaning that as you go closer to the core of the federation, the presence of more advanced technology is to be expected(This also explains the difficulty curve of the game), but if we look closely to this detail it means that the closer to the main alien planets you are, the more advanced the technology gets, meaning that humans are a "new member", not a "founder" of the federation.

The magic of flavor text, this is one the slaver events, check how inhuman

Humanity not being the main focus of the universe would badly hurt human pride, making it obvious that eventually they would take several ships and try to do an uprising, meet the villains of the game, the rebel fleet, the thing is, they are also morally right.

You see, there is no karma meter inside FTL, there are a ton of hard choices but no actual morality system was implemented into the game, which means that the federation fleet usually does whatever they feel like its the right answer.

That leads us to the problem of humanity pushing inside into the leadership by brute force, because being the new guy of an aggressive gang that allows things like the slavery of their species inside their lands, that definitely would fill humanity's collective shitlist and paint a target on the head of the federation, the thing is... The rebels are also wrong.

So, they are trying to change the federation government system with a human-imposed one, making our species' morals and ethics the only ones of the galaxy, in a classic western way of thinking, if we look at some random events, our morals can not possibly apply to some of the species of the game, for name an example, the Lanius.

Lanius have an oxigent problem

The Lanius are a particularly weird species in the perspective of their inclusivity in real-life existence, but heck, the platypus is still a living animal so I can see whatever the Lanius are becoming a real thing in the vast universe, the thing is, they would kill us just by existing.

The Lanius is a race that sucks oxygen out of the air, they absorb it through the skin and process it inside their bodies, that is all the flavor text I could find in 20 hours of play throughout, but there is a detail about them that I would love to point out: They assault all human vessels on sight, while they try to speak and barter with any other species, why is that included inside the game? Because the abandoned systems were previously their homeworlds, the human rebel fleet slaughtered them and pushed the survivors out, forcing them to live and survive as space pirates until their eventual extinction.

So there you go, there are about 15 more details like that hidden inside the flavor text of this game, the rebels are human supremacists that only like one race besides themselves, the engi, because they are machines with a human form, meaning that they see the engi as we see a computer, and not as the federation sees them, as people.

Does this mean that we are allowed to agree with the Federation? I mean the guys quite literally allow their captains to decide "No one survives" in each of the space combats, meaning that each ship under their rule is potentially a mass murder, the random events show that to us with planets that are scared to their core just by seen a federation ship appear in their orbit.

Why did I mention all of this? Because you can play and pass the game without realizing any of it, and we own that to this game's simple design, allowing hardcore sci-fi fans to nerd out like I just did, and keep the gameplay of the game fluid with no exposition or hard choices.

So many ways to play this game, such an Elegant Design

Recorded by me with the Xbox Game Bar tool and backed up on Giphy.

This elegant design is something I came to love because it allows different experiences for different people, do you wanna read every flavor text and get a big sci-fi story? Do it if you like it, you don't? You aren't forced at all, go ahead and explode every ship on your way and don't ask why, this game forces you to do nothing, you could even ignore most of the events and still enjoy the combat and micro-management a lot.

This is even more obvious when we see the rather simple looks of their graphics, one would never expect a game this light and simple looking to be able to go so dark, deep, and special as it does, that is why I called it a masterpiece, because only a masterpiece can become so good that people can interpret whatever it meant originally.

From the moment you take the chair of the captain in FTL, you become able to choose what game experience will you get, so, what are you waiting for captain? Are you gonna go and save the galaxy or what? I will read you in the comment section below.

Bye bye

This game had me hooked again, hell, I wanted to post this Two days ago, but I was so busy getting as many ships unlocked as possible and ending the game over and over with slightly different and more experimental builds, that I can say, this game is addictive, so brace yourself if you can get addicted to micro-management/resource management games.

Faster Than Light

Hazlo si te gusta, ¿A ti no?

I heard about this game when I was in high school, but I don't know why I didn't play it back then. There are games that I used to love to play and then I miss them and check them out again. I guess we do this to make us feel the good times again.

And yes I love micromanagement games and I hope I don't get addicted to this game :)

It is some kind of nostalgic effect the one you describe, the famous "conform games" or those games that people often come back to just to experience "simpler times", I'm sorry to tell you that if you love micromanagement, you are gonna love the pause button of this game, and you are sure to get admitted to it, btw I am also sorry for not showering the community with comments as usual, I was cooking lunch and doing the shopping as my fiancée was busy with the baby and I had to run the house and work at the same time xD So I'm going to start RN with the usual commenting (& Curating) run :) just to catch up with the community and see what games I will add to my pending "to play list".

You're great with comments, man. I know you always do your best and I hope you can keep it up. Good luck with your relationship 😅

Lulz, things are ok, she just asked for an alone time with our baby and a small child pool, it is lovely and fair to do my best for them to share a few hours building a more strong mother-daughter relationship :) Also she does that for me when I need to focus on work or in playing with Sofía :)
