Blog #24: Gods Unchained Welcome Set - Spotlight: Deception

in Hive Gaming4 years ago

I have seen some of the new cards during the weekend Ranked event, which is great because it proves their value for competitive decks. Two of the best new cards belong to deception. I think so far noone realized just how strong they really are, so without further ado, let's check them out.

Spotlight: Deception

The strength of these two cards lies in the same mechanic: making cards more expensive for your opponent. Our first candidate, Stack the Deck, is a 5 Mana spell which lets you and your opponent draw 3 cards. There are multiple situations where this can be great. First, you get 3 cards of course, which might help you in critical situations. Second, your opponent might already have a lot of cards in his hand (especially true for nature right now), so he might not even get 3 cards, or has to obliterate the next card he draws. And third, his cards are more expensive, so basically they are worth less than the cards you drew. In fact, if your opponent got a 9 Mana card, it becomes entirely useless, because he can never get to 10 mana. This is the best case scenario and works with spells and creatures! You can even make sure you hit to hit the right card with Vault Vagabond or a similar card.

The other new OP deception spell, Ransom, is less random but works only against creatures. Use it against every 8 or 9 Mana creature, and it will become unplayable and also clog your opponents hand. And because Deception has several God Powers that can deal with Ward, no creature is safe! Even if you don't make an enemy creature unplayable, increasing its cost by two might make it so expensive that it just isn't worth its Mana cost anymore. I really expect this card to be nerfed, because it is just too good.

One last God to come...

Tomorrow, we will have a look at the new War cards, which is the last remaining domain of new cards. Writing about all these cards really helped me to find their strengths and weaknesses. I don't think they are being used to their full potential so far, so let's see what the great deck builders of Gods Unchained can make out of them.
