Just searched about the Mini Fighters game... Wow, the art style does look similar!

The graphics really have a special and unique charm to it. I think the magic is about the consistency and imaginative elements, staying in 2D allows for a separate set of ideas to make sense that otherwise won't when another dimension is involved. The art and gameplay really made good use of that.
