I've "Passively" Earned $320 From My YouTube Gaming Channel

in Hive Gaminglast year (edited)

Those who have followed me for a while remember how invested I was into the endeavor with my YouTube Channel that I started last summer. Well I thought it was about time I came with a little status update about how this project is currently going. Spoiler alert: it's going rather well.

It's now been nearly half a year since last I talked about my YouTube channel on this blog. The answer to why is quite simple. Burnout. I spent so much time and energy on this channel between starting it up in July and posting my last video for a while in November that I simply burned out. It got to the point where I simply gagged at the thought of making another video. It was time to take a step back and focus on my life for a minute which also coincided well with the fact that we were starting the project of buying a new apartment, selling the old one and moving.

What's ironic is the fact that I quit right around the time I reached 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours to get my channel monetized. Just as I reached the biggest goal of my huge grind I just quit. Quite ironic but that's the way she goes.

What is fun though is that once I got monetized my videos started earning me some money thanks to advertisements being played on my channel. Luckily most of the videos that I've made stay relevant for a long time and some of them are even evergreen, meaning they'll stay relevant practically forever. This means that even if I stopped posting videos to my channel the channel has still been harvesting views and every view is money in the bank for me.

So far I've made around $320 from my YouTube channel. It's not a whole ton seeing as I put in approximately 100 hours in the span on four months building this channel. Still this isn't to bad seeing as I'm still passively getting paid around $2-3 a day for work I did more than half a year ago. Basically I'm earning around $1.7 for a 1000 views, and given that these videos keep performing, this will just keep on accumulating as time goes by.

One thing I try to not think to much about is how this number would have looked if I had kept the channel going by consistently posting new videos all this time. Given I had been able to post as many videos in the four months after I quit that performed in the same way this number would easily have been doubled and perhaps even then some.

This number is also a bit lower than it should have been due to a two week period in December where I wasn't earning anything due to me being a dumbass and forgetting to do parts of the verification process with the YouTube AdSense program. Had I done this in time I would most likely have earned around $30 more.

As you can see in the image above my last video was posted just as I started earning money for the channel... ironic.

Now that I've settled into the new apartment and given it some time I started feeling both a need and a want to return to the channel. I've posted five videos so far that has been performing ok. They're far below my other videos in terms of how fast they get views but honestly that's expected after having taken such a long break.

I'm most likely going to do a few changes to my channel going forward. Right now I'm still making videos about the two games I basically made into my niche and that made me grow. Lost Light and Century: Age of Ashes. This is where I have my audience and it's the games it makes sense to make videos about.

However if I stick to these two games only I'm going to burn out again and that won't take long at all. These are decent games but there's no way I can stay sane by focusing so much on these games. That's why I'm most likely going to rename and re-brand the whole channel in a not so distant future towards something more personalized while also moving away from the free-to-play niche that I've locked myself into.

A pivot like that could end up hurting the channel in the long run, but honestly, what's the point of keeping it going in the first place if it's just going to cause burnouts? With this re-branding I'll start focusing more on the games I'm playing in general. It most likely means posting less videos but hopefully less videos of high quality will be better than many videos of medium quality.

Congrats man. This is just the beginning. The hardest part of YouTube seems to be becoming monetized.

Definitely. The process towards getting monetized is the only time subscribers count. After that it's just a vanity number really.

That's incredible! Congratulations, I think you went through the hardest time of any content creator on YouTube haha. I remember when I was 13/14 years old my dream was to be a YouTuber, I created my Minecraft channel called "Pepsi-Man-YT" and I surpassed 1000 subscribers in less than 2 months, I was happy uploading content, then I joined a partner (at that time it was very common to be with a partner) so I did it with Freedom (I think it doesn't exist anymore). And I remember that after so much effort I was able to charge 1$ by PayPal, hahaha. My CPM is fucking shit because I'm from latin america, so I couldn't succeed XD.

Then I grew up and decided to delete everything about that channel, which I regret today.

Damn! You could have deleted your old videos and kept uploading new ones and still be earning from those. If you managed to get an audience outside of South America you could have been earning a better CPM as well.

Excellent. I've heard that monetizing is not at all simple to achieve but if you're already doing it, it's practically a success. It only remains to increase your earnings progressively.

Yes! What I need to do now is try to create videos that can stay relevant for a long time if I want to keep on earning for my videos in the future.

Your editing on the videos are good as well. I think you should create a udemy course. And make a video about how you earned money making youtube gaming videos and promote your udemy video in there too. Because it looks good and it is catchy. Which program are you using for editing?
We are currently planning for a youtube channel as well. Ours will be tabletop gaming. I'm learning adobe premiere. Maybe you have a better option 🤔🤗🤗

Cheers! I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro. It's the easiest one to handle in my opinion. I just learn by trying really. Every now and then I google a feature I need to see if it can be done.

I would buy your lessons, just saying 😁😁

How nice it is to see how the hard work that surely began for fun, now generated money. No matter how little it is for you, it is always something comforting. I made a channel in 2020 to give training classes to my futsal players, and now I see that I have 830 subscribers, and now I want to upload more videos to reach 1000 and monetize it hehe. In Argentina, 320 USD is a lot of money, so it would help me to buy things haha. Good post, I'm going to follow your progress and see some tips on YouTube to maximize profits. Greetings!

Go for it dude! There's no succeeding if you don't keep trying!

Yooo, congratulations for hitting 1K subs and being monetized!!!!
It is tough to get a consistent following that watches your videos (both for keeping your boat afloat when you get it going...and also to get it going in first place due to the 4000 watch hours required...), so I'm glad that you managed to make it this far with yout channel!

I still have to get on writing ideas for videos and figuring out a way to narrate them (because I'm not used to narrating in Spanish, let alone English which isn't my native language, and TTS is something I still have to look into, leaving text narration as my current option which still has some caveats in execution), and knowing how time consuming it can be at times to get the videos just right, what you got is truly an achievement to celebrate 😄

Cheers dude! It's been a fun endeavor this. I'm definitely more chill about it now that I've reached that goal. Not stressing to get videos out fast and just taking my time with everything. Monetization doesn't go away so there's no rush!

Man, this burnout is happening to all of us. Yours was a really ironic moment. Still, let's face it, 320 bucks ain't bad. It's even good. If you keep it up and your channel keeps growing, which I'm sure it will. you'll be able to multiply that amount in the future. I don't know if it's a good idea to change the name of the channel and the brand, but the important thing is that you feel good and you don't feel burnt out again. I'm sure your viewers will agree and will continue to support you. I also want to give you some advice, my friend. I see people making very interesting income from Shorts videos, I think you should try that.

You can really only earn anything decent from shorts if you go viral and get millions of views. 50k views from a short is really only a few cents. I'm not to worried about the money anyways so I don't think I'll put my efforts into shorts.

300.000 views for 300 dollars sounds like a deal to me on this niche, although I don't know much about Norwegian CPM I think it's a good start!

Norway has one of the highest CPM/RPM in the world but most of my viewers are from the US and Asia so that doesn't really matter at all.

I'm really happy to witness someone actually gets success in youtube this fast. Congratulations man.

I made the mistake of making a "cheese tax" video on my gaming channel with my doggos and got myself over 100 subs on a less than 150 sub channel. D'oh! Sometimes I think I'm just too old for YT The energy required to make entertaining content leaves me not enjoying the game.

I get that! I'm trying to focus more on helpful and valuable content over entertaining content.

Congratulations.

It's pretty cool though to see how much your vids are making!

congrats, but this is Youtube we talking about. Nobody mentions that. It's this company that can pull your income at anytime, close your channel, delete all your videos. C'omon, it's cool it's giving you some money, but really, we praising YouTube just cause it's paying out a bit of money? It's YouTube! I wouldn't count on it for the long run.

Is that really what you pulled out of this post?
