Putting all of Activision's profits from Call Of Duty games into perspective

in Hive Gaming11 months ago

Call O Duty is massive, it is perhaps the biggest franchise in the gaming industry and since their early games in the 2000's they have had a huge presence with gamers, each new installment generates millions but a frequent question is how much they have made since their inception.

Now with the new information about the purchase of Activision along with all their properties by Microsoft some leaks have hit the news portals, some of them more than interesting and others like the one I am going to share in this post are mind blowing.

Since the first game came out in 2003 we have seen more than twenty games released year after year over 4 generations of consoles, plus in the 2010s DLCs were introduced which is another reason why Activision's revenue seems to be astronomical.

27.000.000.000$

Esta es la cifra.

In 20 years we've seen all kinds of games and content in Call Of Duty, so we can start to decipher where that huge amount comes from for the games that have been released in this franchise, this is one of the franchises that represents the philosophy of one game per year better than anyone else.

Call of Duty (2003)
Call of Duty 2 (2005)
Call of Duty 3 (2006)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

Call of Duty: World at War (2008)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012)
Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013)
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014)

Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2015)
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016)

Call of Duty: WWII (2017)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020)
Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021)

Call Of Duty should already be considered one of those sports games that are released year after year, at the beginning of it all the sales that the games made was the majority of what Activision made, it wasn't until the creation of downloadable content, E-Sports and the consolidation of merchandising that the numbers were going to skyrocket to a closer figure.

There is also another very important element in this issue, the microtransactions, which have been a substantial change for the industry to make a notorious financial leap and it is to this day that this practice is one of the most used in big titles, I wonder why?

According to the leaked sources, the figure I put above would be limited to the financial results up to the 2020 period, since that year Call Of Duty has also released two titles, Modern Warfare 2 remake and Warzone, the latter in particular has been a huge success being one of the most successful titles the franchise has, so that figure may be even closer to 30,000,000,000,000, now let's put this number to the test.

Let's see how many countries this franchise has surpassed.

Call Of Duty has made more money than the entire GDP of countries like:

  • Jamaica, almost twice the GDP
  • Montenegro, 5 times as much
  • 75% of Bolivia's economy
  • 7% of Argentina's economy
  • 5% of Brazil's economy

The mere fact that an IP can be worth more than a country and its inhabitants is absurd and fascinating to me.

It makes you think a bit, if Call Of Duty was a country we would already be talking that it would surpass a couple of nations with its assets and annual earnings, and it has achieved it in a few scarce 2 decades which I think is the most exciting achievement, since Mario Bros had not seen a franchise that made so much money and I think that today we can say that it has surpassed Mario by far at least economically.

This meteoric rise makes me think about the industry itself, Microsoft's purchase of Activision is one of the most talked about issues today, it seems they are in the final stages with the regulators but I think the fact that Microsoft is paying for it means something, it's the biggest purchase in history, not just in gaming but in general none has moved more money, it makes you think a little bit about the state of gaming.
