Quarantine Game Series: Splinterlands

Hey guys its Dizzybee, trying out Splinterlands recently, and wanted to share my thoughts on the game! I've been playing card games for a while, mainly Hearthstone and really like this type of collectible card games where strategy is involved. As I'm new to blockchain environment i'm still exploring new apps and since i like games it made sense to check out some of the games on blockchains. Splinterlands was the first one i found, but more recently i found one on the ETH blockchain called Gods Unchained which i'm also trying out

Splinterlands is a cool game that let's you play different elements of decks (known as splinters); fire, earth, water, life, death and dragon. In each game you get to choose which splinter to play, and then make a quick deck for the match with the cards available according to the 'rule' which is applied. Sometimes there are no rules, but sometimes you can get a rule like "no melee allowed" or "no legendaries" and you need to adapt your deck around that. I like this aspect of play as it keeps it fresh and each game is totally different, and you get to learn an adaptive play style where you have to plan ahead. After locking in a deck, the blockchain registers your deck and it's automatically battled against your opponents pre-selected decklist. In this way it's a kind of auto-battler, making the games much shorter than other card games.

Of course, Hearthstone wasn't on a blockchain, so i find it very interesting how these new games on blockchain are being designed. I also really like the aspect of getting to own all of your cards, and being able to trade them on the market for real money. Yes, there is a 10 Dollar 1 off payment to pay in order to be able to play ranked and unlock a whole bunch of other features like daily quests, but after that its easy to play free.

It took me some time to learn the layout of the game and to navigate the marketplace, but there are significant benefits to being able to invest a few dollars into the game if you want to rank up fast in ranked. The higher you get in ranked games the more potential rewards you can get in your daily quests but also in your end of season reward which is awesome!

Last week when i started playing i got to rank Gold 1, just a few wins away from Diamond league where i would have gotten 40 chests! Sadly, i didn't have the card power to compete with high level epic and legendary cards. Maybe next time! There are two currencies in the game; Credits that you can buy with real money or crypto, and Dark Crystals which is the money you earn by winning games. You can buy new cards with both, so free to play players can earn they're way to the top!

For anyone just starting out, i recommend buying the above card Goblin Mech, it definitely carried me through many games! It's quite cheap in the shop and i think should be a staple for all beginners. And if you don't like it, you can always just sell it back to the shop! I like this auction system, the most expensive card i've seen on the market is 999 dollars for a legendary summoner.

After a week of playing, i definitely get the gist of the game, and I enjoy playing for the daily quest. It can be annoying sometimes to get matched with people who have way better cards but that's just the way of the ladder. In any case i hope you guys liked my intro to the game and hopefully see you in game! Thanks for reading.

If you don't have the game already you can try it here:
