My life with and without video games.

in Hive Gaming4 years ago (edited)

Back when I stopped playing games it was because they distracted me and consumed so much of my time that I couldn’t justify them, especially with all the things I wanted to do in my life.

These days it’s different. They almost feel like meditation...like a spa of the imagination.

And I’m playing much more responsibly, not like an addict anymore.

If I have 4 hours, it’s easy to focus for 3 hours and change on work and study and then spend the last 30-40 minutes playing a game.

Not only that...because I’m playing in Japanese, it’s massive motivation for me to get back to studying and getting my Japanese back above kind-of-semi-fluent.

After work yesterday it was
1 hour tax stuff
1 hour study
1 hour advertising
40 minutes gaming

On my day off it was
1 hour study
1 hour advertising
1 hour gaming
2 hours study
1 hour gaming

I got a PS3 from my friend on Sunday.

I started with Assassin’s Creed. I’m not usually into fighting games or Games from western countries but I like conspiracy stories and sci-fi stuff, plus it’s really fun climbing around buildings.

I ran into a big problem with the game though, a glitch where the missions don’t show up on the map so I have no idea where to go. It’s totally different from the walkthroughs. I tried updating, restarting and on and on but no luck.

So after 4 missions where the map worked just enough to complete and doing a bunch of side quests, I decided to forget about this game, watch a story summary on YouTube and start from Assassin's Creed 2 later this week.

I am also playing Kingdom Hearts. I am not a fan of Disney as a company and I don’t love their movies eitherbut there is a lot of nostalgia there, especially anything from the late 80s to around 2000, and I love SquareEnix, plus I like colorful RPGs that take place in non-medieval settings (think Earthbound or Mario RPG). Plus...conspiracies!!!

I love how much about mysticism and the occult influences the gaming world. Both of these games have it The more accurate the better, and also the less dark the overall world (dark storylines ok) the better.

I plan on playing 1 heavy game and 1 light game at a time. After Kingdom Hearts, I’ll try Ni no Kuni, which is a (unofficial) Ghibli animated RPG. It looks solid! After that I’ll get into the Tales of... series which I never really played before. That should keep me busy for a while.

I haven’t planned out what will replace Assassin's Creed yet but there are 4 games to play on PS3 so it’ll be a while, I may even decide to attempt all the side quests.

There are about 15 games I want to play on PS3...after that I’ll pick up a cheap Ps2 because there are a bunch of games I missed on there.

I find myself much more focused when I’m doing work now. I think it’s cause I suppressed this desire to explore other people’s imaginations through this medium for so long and now I’m going wild....for a maximum of one hour a day....usually. I might go over, but I am also studying vocabulary while I play....

In any case, work, my writing and even blogging and vlogging will take priority over gaming, but I’m free to play whenever I finish a task!

I think I’m more motivated because my whole being is more relaxed when I don’t force myself not to do something I enjoy. That “do do do” mentality has always been very strong in me since I got rid of the “blah blah blah” mentality of not feeling good enough, but I think by relaxing it a little bit, I’ll actually be able to accomplish much more!

Speaking of vlogging, I’ve been promoting my YouTube, Self Help for Trolls a lot more these days. I’d love it if you could subscribe and like my videos or even recommend them to a friend. I will do my best to bring all my viewers over to Hive too! My last video was my favorite yet!

Hope you are having a good day with crypto up and everything. If you have any good stories PS3 games to recommend, please let me know!

That's the idea of video games, relaxation. It is true that video games take a lot of time away from other things, but even so, if you manage the time you invest in them well, there will be plenty of time for the rest. But hey, you've got that covered hahaha. Nino Kuni will probably surprise you. It's one of the best games out there, even the Nintendo Ds version. Keep it up, hope to see more of you around.

Ninokuni might not surprise me. I have high expectations, especially ones hat don’t fit into the two tropes of big eyed overly cute and medieval jrpgs or dark zombie monster western Hollywood style. Fantasy is nice, as long as it’s not copy paste!

I just subscribed to your channel and liked the video, I'm not really a gamer that's because of how the time zone can be messed up here. Hopefully I'll see more of your videos?

Thanks a lot! 😃

I’ve never played multiplayer games because they just feel too addictive to me, I like having an ending to the game, and also a story too.
And like I mentioned before, Playing games 10 years after their release is waaaaay cheaper here.

And like I mentioned before, Playing games 10 years after their release is waaaaay cheaper here.

Thats amazing, gives you the opportunity to play the best of games.

I love both Assassin's Creed and Kingdom Hearts XD

I only played the original Assassin's Creed but did watch eldest acquire and play through all the rest of them (though he eventually moved from console to PC).

It's always good to see someone else realising the importance of chilling and doingt hings you enjoy, I'm so used to having to deal with people who have been brutally conditioned to believe that they're lazy good for nothings if they don't spend every waking moment being 100% "productive".

I only like to be brutally productive because I used to get so stuck in other worlds to escape. But now that I do it just to explore and I like my reality program, it's all good!

I just started Assasins creed 2....it's sooo much better. Controls are better, seems like no glitches, and mostly there's real character development. Glad I spent 3 hours on 1 just to get the story basics.

Any other recommendations! I'll probably love most of what you love

I donno XD

Jade Coccoon, all the Final Fantasies (which was basically what I could get in Australia and then I just cold turkey stopped playing because Final Fantasy is deadly when you're a completionist), the Tomb Raider series (think the only one I didn't like was the one where she had excessive boobs) and the Uncharted series (started because it was a Tomb Raider like game and continued because I loved the characters running commentary, one of my favourites being him quipping WHERE ARE THESE GUYS COMING FROM?! during an enemy wave as I had been wondering exactly the same thing at about that point XD).

I actually also quite enjoyed Skylanders even though the gameplay was super basic because we had fun collecting the little figures but you probably don't want to get into that XP

What’s wrong with her boobs!?!

Ahh I see, you like stories plus collecting! I get it. Did you ever play megaman legends? That was like tomb raider meets megaman lol

I’ll check out the others you listed. I am really sad that ps3 only had ff13. I may have to buy ff8 remastered on the switch store...I guess not every game can be $2. I never finished 6 or 8. And never played 12 or 15. They are high on my list but I don’t wanna rush it cause it’ll be a while before I buy a ps5 to play all the new ones coming, ff7-2,16 and whatever else.

They were like 28J or something to that effect (I have no idea I'm just pulling random sizes out of the air) and didn't make proportional sense. Basically my aesthetics got upset XD

I have not played Megaman Legends. I have not played much of anything recently x_x

Except World of Darkness. I managed to finish the rest of the preludes tonight which nicely proved I could still GM for a decent period of time, I was pretty tired after doing youngest's prelude last weekend but I think that might have had something to do with acting as 11 4yos simultaneously XD (youngest's character is a dodecaplet x_x).

What a relief to also see a post about gaming for a change. I wonder if there's also a community for comics.

I'm not really a gamer, but once I start I know I'll also get "addicted" to it 😅
The last one I played was Mortal Kombat (don't ask me which version 😅) and I really enjoyed blowing off steam and trying out those stunts and to me games were also like watching an animated film, so I enjoyed the storyline and the graphics. Even those bad ones from the nineties hahaha

I’m a pretty big rpg fan at least! And I love smash brothers too.

If you are into Japanese comics you can check out this community : https://hive.blog/trending/hive-158489

Eventually I have to write a few posts about Made in Abyss because I just love the world and the animations soundtrack and the themes and want to share it with everyone. There are a few other anime and manga I could talk about, and I do live in Japan, so I feel like it’s a responsibility to share good Japanese stuff.

Hahahaa I get it. Most of my posts are also to share my culture with the world and the history, so that we may find common ground and if not we can at least respect the differences and be informed about those.

I enjoy anime and if I ever got into reading mangas, I would definitely also be into it, as I could almost read anything. My favorite animes that I follow at the moment or used to follow are Naruto, Dragonball, Hero Academia, etc. I know that the first two are so pop culture but can't help it, as those are classics to me haha

Nice one!

Sounds like you did indeed find a way to not feel guilty about gaming and do it in a responsible, fun and educative way. It makes me feel like scoring a console myself. After all, I've never owned one and it's kind of a trauma of mine haha

Plus, I have a beamer.

Posted on NaturalMedicine.io

What kind of trauma!? Video game trauma? I recommend starting with SNES, N64 or PS2, I feel like those consoles had the most awesome games as far as sheer number goes. Don’t do it if it’s an escape! I wanna see that Dino book soon! Lol

Posted on NaturalMedicine.io

The trauma of never having had a console nor a game boy at home, when I grew up.
I could only play these games at friends' places or aunts and uncles' houses. I felt like I was missing out.

I wouldn't do it as an escape but merely for inspiration and storytelling.

I wanna see that Dino book soon! Lol

Your book first, right? ;<)

Posted on NaturalMedicine.io

My book next month, your book next next month, my next book next next next month ;-)

Sounds like a plan ( although Ill probably need a little more time for my book. I like to be your illustrator and focus on art for now. My dino writing will surely re-appear.

Good to hear what you are doing with your time lol. I like the idea of gaming but never entered that world. I like the idea of being paid to game, or making money via gaming, as we can with crypto. Time is precious so I use it for blogging where I earn crypto, or outdoors hiking in nature.

Posted on NaturalMedicine.io

I don’t have the expectation of getting paid to play a game because I play non-multiplayer RPGs, but maybe if I get my Japanese back to where it was before I can apply for some freelance work translating them 😀
